This document summarizes a presentation about using semantic annotation to improve open science. It discusses a project called EUROCORR that published correspondence from Jacob Burckhardt online in an open access format. Memory institutions have built up expertise and taken the lead in all aspects of digital humanities, especially the development and implementation of digital methods for the capture, analysis and dissemination of archives and special collections, including manuscripts. In recent years, these initiatives have become embedded into Digital Humanities Initiatives, Centres and Programmes within research libraries, adding value to the existing relationships between libraries and scholarly iniatiatives. These activities have fostered the development of new projects that bring into collaboration the skills and expertise of academics, librarians, and digital humanists, making the Library increasingly a “digital research infrastructure”. This presentation will discuss these developments based on the experience of the Research Programme in Digital Collections at the National Library of Wales, specifically discussing some recent experimentation with new methods for manuscript digitization and dissemination, including hyperspectral digitization of the Library’s Chaucer manuscripts. The presentation will also discuss the wider embedding of this work within the European Digital Humanities Context, through collaborations with the ESF Research Network Programe NeDiMAH (Network for Digital Methods in the Arts and Humanities).

However, such protections don’t exist outside the United States. This session explores the various ways that visual resource professionals have addressed copyright compliance issues when making images available for educational and scholarly purposes outside of the United States. Using various case studies, the session will address the sharing of image resources between and among different institutions, determining when and how images can be made available to the general public, creating image-based research collaborations across national boundaries, and the international aspects of publishing with images.

The European Library

The European Library is looking to expand its focus beyond national libraries to include research libraries. It aims to aggregate new forms of digital content from research libraries like research datasets, open access articles and monographs, digitized special collections, theses, and grey literature. It also wants to aggregate item-level descriptions and digitized versions of special collections to increase their visibility and discoverability. The European Library plans to create a European research platform by allowing libraries to share and retrieve content through Europeana Cloud. This will enable the research community to build tools on aggregated content. The goal is to better expose research library metadata and content to create new links and research opportunities.

This presentation summarizes the emerging open access landscape in Greece, achievements and challenges of open access work, and the activities of the National Documentation Centre (EKT). Some key points include: - Greece is seeing growing awareness of open access but adoption has been slow. EKT plays a major role in promoting open access through repositories, journals, and information resources. - Achievements include increasing numbers of open access journals and institutional repositories, as well as digitization projects. However, challenges remain around researcher participation, infrastructure sustainability, and lack of policies. - EKT has established several open access journals, repositories, and information portals to support the open access movement in Greece and increase dissemination of Greek research outputs
