We believe in International cooperation - Nordic library meeting in Copenhag...Michel Steen-Hansen
In the Nordic library organizations we believe that international cooperation can create a better world. That's one of the reasons why we meet, once a year, with all the other Nordic countries, discussing how we can strengthen cooperation between libraries for the benefit of people and society. (And I do not mention Trump at all)
This year we meet in Copenhagen and have a series of presentations and discussions, which you can see more about here.
2014 Bringing Libraries on the agenda - a political QuestionMichel Steen-Hansen
Today I make a presentation on the Pre-conference for Decision Makers at the IFLA President´s Meeting 2014 in Helsinki.
The title is "Bringing Libraries on the agenda - a political Question" It's a introduction to The Danish Library Association and its unique organizational structure that involves both politicians and professionals.
In the Danish Library Association we represent one of the more radical solutions to achieving this political approach to working for libraries: We have brought the political decision-makers and the library professionals together in the same association. The President is always politicians and local politicians always constitute the majority.
Today we have visitors from a Turkey. Therefore, we have made a presentation of the Danish Library Association and our special organization's structure. We will also present the Danish think tank Future Libraries and their study
Economic Value of Public Libraries
Danish Library Association
Danish Library Association has a special association structure of library professionals as well as local politicians on the Council. The President is always politicians and local politicians always constitute the majority.
I think this mix of politicians and library professionals Works in a constructive way. Because the professionals inspire the politicians and the politicians give a good insight into how we need to prioritize. And other times it functions inversely.
So I hope we also in the future will be able to get this symbiosis to function and that local politicians want to put as much thought into the matter and will work in our Board, like they do today.
See the presentation
Libraries of the Future – Knowledge, debate and Network
The Danish Think Tank has the ambition to:
• Produce knowledge, analysis and cross-disciplinary activities about the future role of the libraries
• Generate professional, public and political debate and awareness of the role of libraries now and in the future
A bottom-up initiative
The Danish libraries face many challenges such as digitalization and changes in expectations and demands on both physical and digital services; lack of public awareness of library services, changes in library user behavior, lack of political awareness and changes in the role of the librarian. The Think Tank was initiated by the Danish Library Association (DB).
The Think Tank is a two-year project, started October 2012, and co-financed by the participating libraries, library organizations and central library players
The Economic Value of Public Libraries
The Danish Think Tank Libraries of the Future & Copenhagen Economics has
conducted the first study on the economic impact of the Danish public library. The
Danish public libraries provide multiple services to the Danish public today,
which overall seems to be well received by the public. However, the
contributions are often measured in terms of library use (e.g. how many books
were borrowed) and user satisfaction surveys, which are far from adequate when
we want to discuss the role libraries play in modern society. This study digs
deeper and provide the first assessment of the economic value of the public
libraries in Denmark.

Networking the Cultural Heritage of the Baltic Diaspora (Piret Noorhani)heritageorganisations.eu
According to different sources, the number of World War II refugees ranged between 7.5 and 30 million, including over 200 000 Baltic people who fled to the West among them.
Baltic refugees were able to retain their identity thanks to the cultural and educational life of the Baltic communities that had begun already in the DP camps. Formation of the earliest cultural history archives dates back to the same period. After leaving DP camps, Baltic refugees moved on to Sweden, the United States, Australia, Canada and other countries where the local Baltic communities founded their archives that have been functioning thanks to the support and voluntary work of the community members. The aim of these archives has been to gather and preserve the history of the Baltic people in exile – archival materials, printed matter, art, ethnographic and other items. Memory institutions have formed the basis of national culture supporting and safeguarding the continuity of historic knowledge.
With the political changes of end of the 1980s, memory institutions in the Baltic countries also became involved in collecting the cultural heritage of the Baltic Diaspora, as a result of which part of these materials have been brought to the Baltic states. However, a large majority of the archival resources is still preserved abroad, in community and private archives, but also in national memory institutions of the countries with the Baltic Diaspora. In 2005 gathered a work group consisting of the representatives of the Estonian memory institutions and those of the Estonian Diaspora. Their task was to coordinate and facilitate the mapping and preservation of the cultural heritage of the Estonian Diaspora. By the present day the cooperation network has been extended to reach partners from Latvia and Lithuania as well as from the Latvian and Lithuanian Diaspora. In January 2008 was established a new NGO, the Baltic Heritage Network, focussing on organisation of thematic events, gathering of information on Baltic archives abroad in the portal BaltHerNet (www.balther.net) as well as on dissemination of archival know-how and best practices among Baltic communities.

Survey and monitoring digital heritage in Flanders | Bart De NilFARO
The Cijferboek cultureel erfgoed (literal translation: book of numbers cultural heritage) is an initiative of the Agency for Arts and Heritage of the Flemish government and FARO. Flemish interface for cultural heritage.
It collects biannual figures on the operation of the authorized (with accreditation) museums, archives and heritage libraries, and the subsidized nationwide heritage organizations and heritage bodies.
It includes among other data about the management form, staff, volunteers, financial resources, infrastructure (depot), collection size and management, activities, access conditions, visitor numbers and services.
With this tool we want to monitor the evolution of the cultural heritage sector with accurate statistics. Thus, we underpin the (policy)support for cultural heritage.
JSC RIX Technologies has developed several solutions for the preservation of national heritage stored in Latvian museums, archives and other cultural institutions. The information systems are daily used by the employees of the state archive, museums, and culture institutions as well as by persons who are interested in Latvian culture and history.
The new director of The Danish Library Association, Mr. Michel Steen-Hansen, gives a short introduction to The Danish Library Association based on a special association structure with local politicians as well as library professionals on the Council.
A main theme of this introduction will be to what degree political consensus is needed in this kind of organizational setup.
The Danish Library Association is organized on the basis of a number of local associations working on regional level. These local associations elect representatives to the Council of the National association. The Council elects from within its members an Executive Committee with ten members including a president, who is always a politician, and two vice presidents, one a politician and the other a library professional.
Michel Steen-Hansen will then introduce some current issues in focus,
including free an equal access in the modern society and some new programs

Wilhelm Lagercrantz, Digital Strategy / Chief Digital Officer, National Historical Museums Sweden
National Historical Museums is a government agency which includes the Swedish History Museum and the Royal Coin Cabinet plus the museum operations at Tumba Papermill Museum. The agency also performs archaeology services.
The coin collection can trace its roots back to 1572 when Rasmus Ludvigsson, a secretary to the King Johan III started a collection of old Swedish coins.
From the start, there has always been a need to somehow keep track of the collection. In the early days using quill pen and paper, then gradually moving into more modern technology.
In the 1990s parts of the collection information became digital. Today the Swedish History Museum and the Royal Coin Cabinet use different solutions for the collections management and are ready to take the next step by moving in to Adlib. Our expectations are to enhance our work processes even more and reach out globally.

Nutraceutical market, scope and growth: Herbal drug technologyLokesh Patil
As consumer awareness of health and wellness rises, the nutraceutical market—which includes goods like functional meals, drinks, and dietary supplements that provide health advantages beyond basic nutrition—is growing significantly. As healthcare expenses rise, the population ages, and people want natural and preventative health solutions more and more, this industry is increasing quickly. Further driving market expansion are product formulation innovations and the use of cutting-edge technology for customized nutrition. With its worldwide reach, the nutraceutical industry is expected to keep growing and provide significant chances for research and investment in a number of categories, including vitamins, minerals, probiotics, and herbal supplements.
Richard's aventures in two entangled wonderlandsRichard Gill
Since the loophole-free Bell experiments of 2020 and the Nobel prizes in physics of 2022, critics of Bell's work have retreated to the fortress of super-determinism. Now, super-determinism is a derogatory word - it just means "determinism". Palmer, Hance and Hossenfelder argue that quantum mechanics and determinism are not incompatible, using a sophisticated mathematical construction based on a subtle thinning of allowed states and measurements in quantum mechanics, such that what is left appears to make Bell's argument fail, without altering the empirical predictions of quantum mechanics. I think however that it is a smoke screen, and the slogan "lost in math" comes to my mind. I will discuss some other recent disproofs of Bell's theorem using the language of causality based on causal graphs. Causal thinking is also central to law and justice. I will mention surprising connections to my work on serial killer nurse cases, in particular the Dutch case of Lucia de Berk and the current UK case of Lucy Letby.
Richard's entangled aventures in wonderlandRichard Gill

Extrachromosomal Inheritance
Slide 2: Introduction to Extrachromosomal Inheritance
Definition: Extrachromosomal inheritance refers to the transmission of genetic material that is not found within the nucleus.
Key Components: Involves genes located in mitochondria, chloroplasts, and plasmids.
Slide 3: Mitochondrial Inheritance
Mitochondria: Organelles responsible for energy production.
Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA): Circular DNA molecule found in mitochondria.
Inheritance Pattern: Maternally inherited, meaning it is passed from mothers to all their offspring.
Diseases: Examples include Leber’s hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON) and mitochondrial myopathy.
Slide 4: Chloroplast Inheritance
Chloroplasts: Organelles responsible for photosynthesis in plants.
Chloroplast DNA (cpDNA): Circular DNA molecule found in chloroplasts.
Inheritance Pattern: Often maternally inherited in most plants, but can vary in some species.
Examples: Variegation in plants, where leaf color patterns are determined by chloroplast DNA.
Slide 5: Plasmid Inheritance
Plasmids: Small, circular DNA molecules found in bacteria and some eukaryotes.
Features: Can carry antibiotic resistance genes and can be transferred between cells through processes like conjugation.
Significance: Important in biotechnology for gene cloning and genetic engineering.
Slide 6: Mechanisms of Extrachromosomal Inheritance
Non-Mendelian Patterns: Do not follow Mendel’s laws of inheritance.
Cytoplasmic Segregation: During cell division, organelles like mitochondria and chloroplasts are randomly distributed to daughter cells.
Heteroplasmy: Presence of more than one type of organellar genome within a cell, leading to variation in expression.
Slide 7: Examples of Extrachromosomal Inheritance
Four O’clock Plant (Mirabilis jalapa): Shows variegated leaves due to different cpDNA in leaf cells.
Petite Mutants in Yeast: Result from mutations in mitochondrial DNA affecting respiration.
Slide 8: Importance of Extrachromosomal Inheritance
Evolution: Provides insight into the evolution of eukaryotic cells.
Medicine: Understanding mitochondrial inheritance helps in diagnosing and treating mitochondrial diseases.
Agriculture: Chloroplast inheritance can be used in plant breeding and genetic modification.
Slide 9: Recent Research and Advances
Gene Editing: Techniques like CRISPR-Cas9 are being used to edit mitochondrial and chloroplast DNA.
Therapies: Development of mitochondrial replacement therapy (MRT) for preventing mitochondrial diseases.
Slide 10: Conclusion
Summary: Extrachromosomal inheritance involves the transmission of genetic material outside the nucleus and plays a crucial role in genetics, medicine, and biotechnology.
Future Directions: Continued research and technological advancements hold promise for new treatments and applications.

Earliest Galaxies in the JADES Origins Field: Luminosity Function and Cosmic ...Sérgio Sacani
We characterize the earliest galaxy population in the JADES Origins Field (JOF), the deepest
imaging field observed with JWST. We make use of the ancillary Hubble optical images (5 filters
spanning 0.4−0.9µm) and novel JWST images with 14 filters spanning 0.8−5µm, including 7 mediumband filters, and reaching total exposure times of up to 46 hours per filter. We combine all our data
at > 2.3µm to construct an ultradeep image, reaching as deep as ≈ 31.4 AB mag in the stack and
30.3-31.0 AB mag (5σ, r = 0.1” circular aperture) in individual filters. We measure photometric
redshifts and use robust selection criteria to identify a sample of eight galaxy candidates at redshifts
z = 11.5 − 15. These objects show compact half-light radii of R1/2 ∼ 50 − 200pc, stellar masses of
M⋆ ∼ 107−108M⊙, and star-formation rates of SFR ∼ 0.1−1 M⊙ yr−1
. Our search finds no candidates
at 15 < z < 20, placing upper limits at these redshifts. We develop a forward modeling approach to
infer the properties of the evolving luminosity function without binning in redshift or luminosity that
marginalizes over the photometric redshift uncertainty of our candidate galaxies and incorporates the
impact of non-detections. We find a z = 12 luminosity function in good agreement with prior results,
and that the luminosity function normalization and UV luminosity density decline by a factor of ∼ 2.5
from z = 12 to z = 14. We discuss the possible implications of our results in the context of theoretical
models for evolution of the dark matter halo mass function.
