Conversation Between Countries Valentina, Marcos and Violeta
1.
Conversation between: Woodrow Wilson, David Lloyd George and Georges Clemenceau. This is a brief introduction which describes each of these presidents: Woodrow Wilson: Woodrow Wilson was the president of USA. His main idea was to end WW1 in a peaceful way ,that's why, in 1918, he did the "14 points speech". He was an idealist and a reformer. David Lloyd George: David Lloyd George was the president of Great Britain. In public he praised Woodrow's ideas but the truth was that he didn't agree because he wanted Germany to pay for war she did and Wilson's terms of justice were very peaceful. He was an idealist and a politician. Georges Clemenceau: Georges Clemenceau was the president of France. In public he agreed with Woodrow's ideas but the truth was that he didn't agree . He didn't agree with Woodrow because he saw this treaty as an opportunity to make Germany pay for war she did and Wilson's terms of justice were very peaceful. Conversation: Woodrow Wilson: Good afternoon, gentlemen. We are here to discuss three important points: what type of punishment Germany should receive, what we are going to get as compensation from the war and the last one, what you think about the 14 points. In my opinion we should start discussing what type of punishment Germany should receive. Georges Clemenceau: Well, I think that the Germans have to be punished as hard as possible. Because of her, my land is destroyed and France's population is in decline compared to Germany´s, that´s why I want her to suffer. I see this treaty as the best opportunity we have to punish her harshly for what she did and to let her know very clearly who she is fighting with. Woodrow Wilson: I totally disagree with you, Georges. I obviously think that Germany should be punished because of all the damage she caused but not too harshly. If we punish the Germans too hard they will feel humiliated and will be furious with us. With the passing of the years they will get stronger and more powerful so they might take revenge on us. David Lloyd George: In this issue I am on Woodrow´s side. I think that if we make Germany suffer too much they will definitely take revenge on us in the future. However. I want one thing, I want Germany to lose her navy and colonies. She threatened my empire so I want her to pay a little bit. Woodrow Wilson: It shows that we all want different things but we have to solve this problem immediately. I think that the best solution is to make a treaty with which we all agree. In this treaty we will include the punishment for the Germans which will be to reduce its army, to pay money, to hand over her colonies, to pay the damage
2.
she has caused and to accept that she has the blame for starting the war. Do we all agree? Georges Clemenceau:Yes I agree. David Lloyd George: Absolutely. Woodrow Wilson: I am glad we all agree. Now, we have other terms to discuss, let's continue with the 14 points. I want to know what your opinion about my “14 points speech” is. David Lloyd George: Oh right, well I agree with most of the 14 points except for the point number two, which says “Absolute freedom of navigation upon the seas, outside territorial waters, alike in peace and in war, except as the seas may be closed in whole or in part by international action for the enforcement of international covenants.”I don't agree with this point because, as we all know, my country is an island and if all the countries have free navigation in open seas they would pass through my territory. Also I think you should have consulted us before making the 14 points public. Georges Clemenceau: I agree with David Lloyd George. Wilson, you should have told us your plans. Woodrow Wilson: I am sorry, at first I wasn't going to present my points but I decided to go through with it last minute. I have heard David’s complaints, now I would like to hear Georges’. Georges Clemenceau: I agree with all of the points, specially with the point that states “All French territory should be freed and the invaded portions restored, and the wrong done to France by Prussia in 1871 in the matter of AlsaceLorraine, which has unsettled the peace of the world for nearly fifty years, should be righted, in order that peace may once more be made secure in the interest of all”. AlsaceLorraine was part of my land before the Germans took it from us and I will be happy of having it back. Woodrow Wilson: So gentlemen, are you all signing the 14 points? David Lloyd George: I still don't agree with the point number two so I won't sign that one but I will still consider the others. Georges Clemenceau: Indeed. Woodrow Wilson: Impeccable. David Lloyd George: I would like to discuss the last term, what we should get as compensation from the war. Georges Clemenceau: What I want is very simple. Because of the Germans my land is destroyed so I want it to be rebuilt. My land is devastated in comparison with the land of the Germans, I want my land to be rebuilt immediately. Woodrow Wilson: Well, we will meet your needs. What I want as compensation is also very simple. I want people to follow and respect my 14 points. Honestly, I took a lot of time to make these 14 points, I would like that the people respect what I have done and follow these points. David you are the last one, what do you want as compensation?
3.
David Lloyd George: Oh right, first I want to say that we will also meet your needs Woodrow. What I want is Germany to pay. A lot of my population died because of the Germans so I want them to pay. Woodrow Wilson: Gentlemen, we have finished discussing all the terms. Georges Clemenceau: I am glad we finished and that we all agree with the things that we have discussed. David Lloyd George: Well, now we can leave. I am leaving, have a nice day. Georges Clemenceau and Woodrow Wilson: Goodbye David.
