This document discusses how the author used black and white coloring in a scene from their media project to indicate it took place in the past. The author explains they added a black and white effect to a goodbye scene at the airport between two characters, Abhi and Amelia, to distinguish it as a past event rather than the next scene. The author also discusses how black and white coloring can represent negativity like loneliness for the departing characters, but white can suggest positive aspects like freedom for the character left behind.

In the scene when Abhi and Amelia say goodbye at the
airport, I added an effect , black and white to show that
the scene was set in the past and to not confuse the
audience because if it was in the same colour as the rest
of the opening, it is possible for them to assume it was the
next shot, where as it was a past scene. I concluded to do
this because in the mystery horror psychological thriller
film, ‘House at the end of the street’, in the opening of the
film is a scene set in the past, showing when the daughter
of a family kills her mother and father but the scene is
dark and no the colour is normal so you therefore cannot
tell that it is from the past until the scene has finished so
it was not a very clear indication that the scene was in the
past so I developed and challenged this by thinking about
how to make our scene more clear that it is set in the past
so I used a black and white effect as in the past, films
were shot in black and white so by seeing the black and
white effect it would remind the audience of the past in
technology when the TV was only played with the colours
black and white.

Also, the black and white effect shows both the negativity
and positivity of the action of Amelia leaving for a business
trip and also leave Abhi all alone to cater for herself. The
colour ‘black’ represents the loneliness for both characters
as they will be by themselves as the colour black is
negative and is quite a single colour as it does not mix with
other colours to create new colours i.e. like yellow and
green create blue but black does not tend to be mixed as it
is only mixed white to create grey but grey is not a
common colour so it is not likely for the colour black to be
mixed which therefore represents loneliness as the colour
stands on its own. Also, the colour black represents the
struggle it must have took for Amelia to be able to leave
Abhi alone on her own and take responsibility for herself
for the first time which would show a big development in
Abhi and Amelia’s mother and daughter relationship,
therefore this will show to the audience that this is test for
their relationship. Also the colour black suggests ‘danger’
as in horror films the evil characters as predominately
dressed in black as they are capable to do bad and
immoral things which are dangerous e.g. in the film ‘saw’
as the main character is dressed in a black tuxedo. The
colour black therefore foreshadow a dangerous and
harmful event which could occur.

On the other hand, the colour ‘white’ suggests positive
aspects of Amelia leaving. The colour white represents
freedom which can be shown through the freedom Abhi is
left with by being home alone, the freedom allows her to
take responsibility to be mature and learn how to manage
living on her own for when she gets older and she will not
be living with her mother any more.
