F.R.I.E.N.D.S is an American sitcom and one of the best TV shows that
ever aired. It is created by David Crane and Marta Kauffman, which
aired on NBC from September 22, 1994, to May 6, 2004, lasting ten
seasons. You can binge watch this show like a million times and it will
still put you in an amazing mood and make you laugh.
Importantly all of the cast members are well known and loved
throughout the world, starring Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa
Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry and David Schwimmer. The
show focuses on how these friends go through the ups and downs of
their lives while being there for each other.
The series was produced by Bright/Kauffman/Crane Productions, in
association with Warner Bros. Television.
ABOUT THE SERIES
 The series opens with the title of the show,
F.R.I.E.N.D.S, and the background shows
building of New York where the series is set.
The different colors in the title signifies
different personalities of the characters.
 The opening shows close up of each
characters face when their name appears, a
great way to introduce the characters to the
audience.
 The genre is “SITCOM” which is a situational
comedy and is represented by the goofiness
and chumminess of the characters with each
other and how they play around in the
fountain and the umbrella i.e.. the props.
Their costumes show that the show is based
in the 20th century.
THE OPENING SCENE
 The opening shows an extreme long shot of the scene to show the location which
transitions into a long shot with the characters sitting on a sofa, hence revealing
the cast. Close up of the actors are shown to focus on each one of them specifically.
The rest of the opening follows into medium long shots, the cast being goofy and
messing around with each other until the end where in a long shot one of the
characters turn outs the lamp, and the scene ends. A very exquisite way of
introducing the cast. Most of the scenes are from a point of view angle.
 The lightning is adjusted very beautifully, with a dark background and the main
light source on the characters, showing that the source is the lamp which is turned
off at the end and the screen blacks out.
Cinematography
 The editing is on point, its very simple and very pleasing. It opens and
closes with a black fade in and out. The clips in between are very short
focusing on all the cast, not elaborating their actions which doesn't
bore the audience and keeps them alert. It’s a rhythmic editing with
the pace of the music.
 Speaking of music, everyone who has seen FRIENDS knows the theme
song by heart. The song ‘I’ll be there for you’ by the Rembrandts plays
through the opening title sequence, which gives the audience a sense
of their friendship and it foreshadows most of the program. It fits with
the genre of the show, and the claps in between involves the audience
because they feel like they are a part of it, knowing that they can clap
along too.
Editing and Sound
 The mise en scene is magnificent, the way they have used the one
couch to portray comfort and friendship is amazing. The lamp is
used to show how in the beginning it is lighted up but at the end
it is turned off and the scene darkens and ends.
 The clothes worn by the cast is black and white but the colorful
umbrellas shows the ups and down of their life and how they will
still be there for each other. The oversized clothes and turtle necks
show the time when the series is based.
 The fountain is used as the center piece, and the whole opening
revolves around it. THE FOUNTAIN OF FRIENDSHIP.
Mise en scene
 The title is plain white with colorful dots which
represents different personalities of the characters.
 The rolling tittles are in a funky font supporting
how the cast is acting.
 The font is of white colour with a background
making it pop and stand out.
Written Text
 The opening has some fast clips of older episodes
intermixed with the gang dancing and splashing
around in a huge fountain. These quick cuts could
be interpreted as signifying the fast and busy life
that the friends lead.
 The fact that they are all dancing and laughing in
the fountain connotes youthfulness, and perhaps
even the implication that their youth is eternal and
unchanging (ie, the fountain of youth).
 The words to the song are quite basic and reinforce
the importance of friendship
SEMIOTICS
THAT’S ALL FOLKS
