Content Strategy Triage: Who lives? Who dies? Who do you fight to save?Scriptorium Publishing
First delivered at LavaCon 2015 in New Orleans. Sarah O'Keefe discusses how to use triage principles to prioritize content strategy efforts. This is the 20-minute keynote version.
Have you been wondering WTF is the Semantic Web? Greg Elin explains the key pieces and benefit of the buzz words and concepts in a mere 5 minutes and 20 slides.
Beating the Class out of Drupal 8: An intro to the Classy core themeCoLab Coop
For years now, frontend developers have ranted and whined about Drupal's divitis, a disease that's been greatly eradicated in Drupal 8 with the introduction of smarter templates and the use of Twig.
But a secondary problem often crops up for Drupal frontenders -- all the CSS classes, and corresponding styles, that Drupal stuffs into every element that's left. For some themes, Drupal's default classes give a nice starting point. For others, they provide hours of delightful fun learning about style cascades and specificity issues. In other words, they can be awful.
Drupal themers can be an ornery bunch, and for awhile now they've been arguing about which approach is better, like historical browser war re-enactors set loose on the Drupal issue queues.
No longer. A consensus has emerged, beginning relatively recently in Drupal 8 development, that allows themers to choose between including Drupal's default classes, and using none at all. Its name is Classy. Come hear about this brave new world, with such base themes in it!
Drupal DOMinate was presented by Matt Wrather and Steven Rifkin at the Los Angeles Drupal User Group meetup 5/14/13. The presentation covers the use of the Drupal Javascript API focusing on the behaviors and settings objects.

Against Best Practices - Embracing the Avant Garde for a Weirder WebChelsea Maxwell
Best practices serve a purpose. Building sites in a standard way presents users with a format they're familiar with and lets them know what to expect. However, after decades of being an exploratory wilderness -- where you'd never know what you'd find traveling from link to link -- the Internet has settled into a comfortable homogeneity. The increase in ease of use has come at the cost of excitement, curiosity, and delight. Let's see what we can do to shake things up. I'll be talking about: - What it means to be avant-garde in regards to the web - How the mental models users have of the internet are formed, and thus can be explored and changed - When is the right time to try something unusual - Why you still need to make sites accessible even when you're building outside the box - Where to find inspiration for weirder web patterns
CSS Layout in 2016 is a mess of hacked together methods using techniques that were never designed for complex web and application layout. However change is in the air, brought to us by specifications such as CSS Grid Layout, Flexbox, and the Box Alignment Module. In this session Rachel will introduce these specifications, explaining how they fit together to create a new system for layout.

Today we have CSS specifications for animation and transitions, complex layout, custom properties and much more. In addition to the breadth of modern CSS specifications, our evergreen, auto-updating browsers sneak in new features with every release.
In this talk, I’ll be taking a look at some of the things that CSS is capable of, some of which you might think you need a JavaScript framework or at least a pre-processor to achieve.

Ahava will show you how to avoid this problem and plan your content for success. Using case studies from a major university, a children’s hospital and a major publishing company, you will learn how to set up your digital projects, so that content is a major consideration and doesn’t destroy your project at the last minute.

UX Poland 2016 - Nick van der Linde - Context is King – Creating Smarter, Ada...UX Poland
This talk will elaborate on an increasingly relevant–yet often overlooked–part of digital product design: context. Now that our industry has (sort of) mastered responsive design, our next challenge as designers and developers is creating smarter products that utilise device sensors, data, and previous behaviour to create a more seamless, efficient and successful user experience. At Mirabeau we have been playing around with things like data, device sensors and (previous) customer behaviour that together help us anticipate a user’s intent. Paired with web development best practices like progressive enhancement, this allows us to create more efficient and enjoyable digital experiences. This talk will:
- show examples of “smarter” digital products from our own work, and other industries
- reveals the fundamentals of our agency’s research/discovery/design approach
- concludes with some design principles for creating context-aware product

5 Revolutionary Technologies Technical Communicators Can’t Afford To IgnoreScott Abel
Getting the right information to the right people, at the right time, in the right format, and in the right language is the goal of every professional technical communicator. But, the pace of change is fast, and each and every step forward is often accompanied by two steps back. That’s because the speed of technological change is outstripping our ability to keep up. It seems we’re always playing catch up. But, it doesn’t have to be that way.
In this slide deck, Scott Abel, The Content Wrangler, showcases five powerful information technology innovations that, when harnessed by professional technical communicators, can help us future-proof our content and ensure we’re meeting – even exceeding – our goals.
This is the presentation given at WordCamp Hamilton 2016. This is a follow up to my WordPress 101 talk given last year and goes more into detail about hosting, hiring a professional and general practices about selecting themes and plugins.
We were at TLCC2016 to discuss the considerations, processes, challenges, and benefits involved in our approach to delivering websites for cultural organizations. SmashingConf SF: Unlocking the Power of CSS Grid LayoutRachel Andrew
UNLOCKING THE POWER OF CSS GRID LAYOUT
Once you have grasped the basics of CSS Grid, you quickly discover how it enables many existing design patterns in a streamlined, elegant way. However, we shouldn’t see Grid in isolation. Understanding how other parts of CSS work together with Grid is key, in order to get the most out of our new abilities.
In this talk Rachel will be concentrating on a couple of these areas, CSS Box Alignment and CSS Sizing. Rachel will show you practical ways in which a little bit of knowledge in these areas can unlock the full potential of the Grid Specification. You’ll learn how to create useful components and to start thinking of ways in which you can solve design and interface problems in more creative ways.
Grid layout has now landed in all of the mainstream desktop browsers. It's exciting but how do we start to move to using grid layout, and why should we?

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.
Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.
