Alfred Wegener first proposed the theory of continental drift in the early 20th century, suggesting that the continents were once joined together in a supercontinent called Pangaea but have since drifted apart. However, his theory was rejected by other scientists at the time because he could not explain the force causing the continental movement. It was not until the 1940s with the discovery of sea floor spreading that scientists began to accept plate tectonics as the mechanism driving continental drift.
