CONSTE ATI S
When you look at the night sky what
are you looking at? Do you see
pictures/figures of animals, objects,
and humans?
WHAT IS A CONSTELLATION?
A pattern, or shape, made
by stars in the night sky.
The pattern constellations form
may take the shape of:
Animal
Mythological creature
Man
Woman
Inanimate object (microscope, compass,
crown)
HOW MANY CONSTELLATIONS AR E
THER E?
 There are 88 constellation recognized
by the international astronomical
union.
 They identified clusters of stars as
gods, goddesses, animals, and objects
of their stories.
There are 13 astronomical zodiac
constellations.
1.Capricornus
2. Aquarius
3. Pisces
4. Aries
5. Taurus
6. Gemini
7. Sagittarius
8. Scorpius
9. Cancer
10. Leo

What is Constellation?
A group of stars that
appears to form a
pattern or picture like
Orion the Great Hunter,
Leo the Lion, or Taurus
the Bull.
What is Asterisms?
 Asterism, a pattern of stars that is not
a constellation.
The local sky can be described by several
points or reference from the ground
The rotation of earth and daily motion
stars
Circumpolar Stars
Circumpolar stars are stars that do not set.
The revolution of earth and the
constellations.
There are two types of
evidence for Earth's
motion seen in
constellations. During the
night, the stars appear to
shift positions due to
Earth's rotation.
The constellations seen on different
months of the year
1. Winter
2. Spring
3. Summer
4. Autumn

USES F OR CONSTELLATIONS:
Constellations help people to recognize
stars in the sky. By looking for patterns, the
stars and locations can be much easier to
spot.
The constellations had uses in ancient
times. They were used to help keep track of
the calendar. This was very important so
that people knew when to plant and harvest
crops.
 Another important use for
constellations was navigation. By
finding Ursa Minor it is fairly easy to
spot the North Star (Polaris). Using
the height of the North Star in the
sky, navigators could figure out
their latitude helping ships to travel
across the oceans.
Activity: Make a constellation using a
recyclable material that you have. Be creative
and present it on the class. I will give you 10
mins each group
