Conservation involves protecting and sustainably managing the natural environment and native species. Biodiversity refers to the variety of lifeforms including plants, animals, and microorganisms within ecosystems. Western Australia has high biodiversity with 26 bioregions and thousands of species including over 6,000 types of cryptogams, 80,000 insect species, and 12,000 vascular plants. However, many native species are at risk of extinction due to threats such as introduced species, fire hazards, habitat destruction, salinity, and dieback disease.
