Building native applications across multiple platforms is hard. iOS requires knowledge of Xcode, the iOS SDK and Objective-C or Swift. Are we really expected to learn all of this? You can take the HTML5 & Cordova route, but not all apps should be built using a hybrid approach. John Brown led a raid on a federal armory in Harpers Ferry, Virginia in 1859 hoping to start a slave revolt. He was captured along with 21 men, including 5 black men, and was later hanged for his actions. The raid gained significant attention as it showed the divide between abolitionists in the North and pro-slavery advocates in the South. Events like the Kansas-Nebraska Act and Dred Scott decision inflamed tensions by renewing hopes of expanding slavery and ruling that blacks could not be citizens, pushing Brown and others to take action. His raid was seen as a catalyst for the eventual Civil War as it demonstrated the North was willing to use force and increased political tensions between free and slave states.

Netflix was one of the earliest very large AWS customers. By 2014, we were running hundreds of applications in Amazon EC2. That was great, until we needed to move to VPC. Given our scale, uptime requirements, and the decentralized nature of how we manage our production environment, the VPC migration (still ongoing) presented particular challenges for us and for AWS as it sought to support our move. In this talk, we discuss the starting state, our requirements and the operating principles we developed for how we wanted to drive the migration, some of the issues we ran into, and how the tight partnership with AWS helped us migrate from an EC2-Classic platform to an EC2-VPC platform.
