My meetings with Karl challenge me to forget what I now take for granted and position me to push myself to make him and I truly believe change is possible” Tom, BBC mentor “ I look forward to meeting my mentor each week, it’s the only thing structured in my life at the moment” Sarah,TP mentee “ BBC staff have provided invaluable support and opportunities to the charity, staff & clients” Chief Exec announces BBC Connect & Create as Corporate Partner of the Year 2009 “ I support my staff to get involved in mentoring…it helps us become even more visible in our community” Editor BBC Radio Merseyside
Right! Good morning everyone. I’ve been asked to come here today to talk about how the BBC reward & recognize staff for engaging with the public. Well actually, I’d like to flip the question around and tell it from my perspective, How can I facilitate BBC staff to reach diverse audiences that further fulfill BBC’s public purpose as a public service broadcaster?
I’m Caroline Ward, the Partnership Manager for Connect & Create across the North of England Over the next 5 minutes I’m going to explain what Connect & Create is, Why we do what we do, How we do it, and the Reward and Recognition it brings. I will also comment briefly on the National Coordinating Centre’s six areas of focus and their relevance within the BBC.
Connect & Create brings BBC staff together with audiences to create unique learning experiences for everyone involved. We work with our third-sector partners which represent our audiences, particularly those who are ‘ hard to reach’ (this could include BBC staff!). It’s an opportunity for staff to develop new skills as part of our working day , and with the support of our line managers. Through this scheme we usually produce broadcast content, influenced, if not led , by audiences For example, we’ve worked in partnership with Great Ormond Street Hospital to produce video diaries capturing patients accounts of health and hospitals We also work with charities to provide mentoring opportunities for staff to help unemployed people into work.
As a publicly funded institution, audiences are automatically at the heart of what we do. This means the public have a stake in our work. Engagement ensures that the BBC has an impact beyond broadcast. This is outlined in our six public purposes, listed here, which essentially justify our role as a public service broadcaster. Our audiences are constantly changing and we need to keep up with that pace of change to stay relevant to these audiences. This is where Connect & Create comes in to provide mutual benefit... - Staff gain hands-on experience whilst broadening their horizons. - Charities benefit from staff expertise And together this creates mutual understanding
How do we reward and recognise staff? Connect and Create encourage and support BBC staff to deliver engagement work through training and development – gaining skills is part of the reward. Staff can also demonstrate in their appraisal how Connect & Create facilitates them to put BBC values into practice. This features as a specific workload objective. Connect & Create is not in job descriptions but the competencies and skills gained on projects are highly relevant to any job you apply for in the BBC. This engagement is featured as a legitimate activity within staff contracts. Staff are highly encouraged do at least 3 days volunteering per year as part of their job. Its important to mention this is not compulsory – it’s a choice. We need staff to be responsible for their own development and be highly motivated on this scheme. In terms of communicating success… We celebrate and showcase participants and their projects and we encourage our partners to communicate and showcase projects on their websites. This promotes peer recognition and instant ‘ambassadors’ for the BBC We encourage people to submit work to external awards but we do not do internal awards as we want to promote all projects
Essentially we see Reward and Recognition in terms of the Benefit and Impact it brings to our stakeholders - Staff, Our partners, Audiences, the Broadcast sector and wider society. For example, Deloitte estimates that BBC Training leads to a benefit of 59 million pounds per annum to improved productivity to the creative economy .
My challenge for you is to consider what does reward and recognition look like from the outside-in – what would a university that worked in this way look like? Thanks for listening.
