1. Stuart Ross BAME PR Internship
Victoria Harrison-Cook MBE
Head of Media, TfL
2.
3. The role of TfL
• Keeping London moving and working and making life in London
better
• Delivering a transport system that secures London’s position as a
world-leading city and the engine of the UK economy
• Ensuring that those who live and work in or visit London can access
all the capital has to offer in terms of jobs, leisure, health and
education
• Helping to develop and build the city around us, supporting jobs and
growth
7. • The Stuart Ross BAME internship was set up in 2006 to address
underrepresentation in our own press office and in the industry,
with the first interns starting in January 2007.
• TfL was representative of London as a whole (one third BAME)
• Just 8 per cent of the press office was BAME in 2006
• 6 month pilot – now expanded to 11 month annual programme
taking 2 interns per year
Stuart Ross BAME Internship – A History
8. Why our internship is different?
• We genuinely recognise the importance of diversity – it isn’t a tick box
exercise.
• Motivation is key.
• We don’t have a typical candidate.
• Assessment Centres
• Integral part of the team working on key PR issues and campaigns.
• We try to tailor the scheme to interns’ interests and ambitions so they can
develop as individuals.
• Bursary paid at the London Living wage with TfL’s benefits.
9. • 26 interns have been through the
scheme (16 women, 10 men).
• 9 interns secured jobs at TfL
following their internship, 8 of
these were in the press office
• Until recently one third of the
press office was BAME
• Now expanded to other
TfL Communications
departments
