Project-Based Inquiry and New LiteraciesErin Lyjak
The document discusses new literacies and project-based inquiry in 1:1 classroom environments. It describes a new learning ecology framework that is prompted by ubiquitous access to technology. This ecology includes four conditions: online reading comprehension, multimedia/video, web 2.0 and social networking, and educational games. Project-based inquiry is presented as a way to engage students through compelling questions and complex intellectual products. The teacher takes on roles as facilitator and coach within this new ecology.
This document discusses the role of information and communication technologies (ICTs) in teacher education. It argues that ICTs have transformed how people communicate and do business globally. For education to reap the full benefits of ICTs, teachers need basic ICT skills and competencies. Teacher education programs must provide leadership in using new technologies and modeling new pedagogies. A shift from teacher-centered to learner-centered instruction is needed to help students acquire 21st century skills. ICTs can support this shift by providing tools for collaboration, access to information, and new ways for students to demonstrate understanding. The role of teachers is changing from knowledge transmitter to learning facilitator.
CHALLENGES TO TEACHER EDUCATION IN 21ST CENTURY : IN THE LIGHT OF INCLUSIVE ...Rajnish Kumar Arya
This document discusses the challenges of teacher education in the 21st century in light of inclusive education. It begins with introducing the concepts of children with special needs and inclusion. Some key challenges identified include the lack of focus on special education in university curriculum and teacher training programs. There is also a shortage of special educators and resource teachers in Chhattisgarh, India where data shows about 65,000 school-aged children with disabilities but less than 200 resource teachers. The document argues that teacher education needs interventions like curriculum modification, pre-service teacher training, and involvement of special educators to effectively support the growing number of children with special needs in the region.

This study aimed to develop a model of excellent teacher thinking based on data from 105 excellent teachers in Malaysia. The study found that teacher expectations and subject expertise were the most significant predictors of teaching performance, explaining 31.1% of the variance. Specifically, teacher expectations had the highest contribution to performance. The model shows that an excellent teacher's thinking incorporates teaching philosophy, pedagogical knowledge, management style, objectives, and expectations. Of these, expectations were found to be most vital for excellent teaching.
The National Competency-Based Teacher Standards (NCBTS) provides a single framework that defines effective teaching in the Philippines. It is intended to guide all aspects of a teacher's professional development and practice. The NCBTS framework is organized into 7 domains that represent distinct areas of the teaching and learning process, with each domain defined by a principle related to enhancing student learning. The NCBTS aims to establish consistent standards for quality teaching across the country and provide a common language for teachers to evaluate and improve their practice.

This document discusses North Carolina's educator effectiveness update for a statewide meeting of local planning teams. It focuses on setting the context for improving student learning through enabling great teaching. It discusses key elements of the educator effectiveness policies including using a growth model called EVAAS to measure standards 6 and 8, determining educator effectiveness status, and developing measures of student learning for non-tested grades and subjects. The goal is to create a system that identifies the strongest teachers so they can teach others and supports teachers who need additional help.
This document provides an overview of the ReTeach program, which focuses on teaching and learning in higher education. It includes Chinese proverbs about learning, principles of good teaching, theories of teaching, and frameworks for constructive alignment between learning outcomes, teaching methods, and assessment. The goal of ReTeach is to involve students and teachers in the learning process through active and social learning experiences, clear expectations, feedback, and reflection on teaching practices. References are provided for further reading on quality learning and teaching in higher education.
The document discusses evaluating lessons through reflection and provides guidance on effective evaluation practices. It defines evaluation as a purposeful, cyclical process of collecting, analyzing, and interpreting information to make educational decisions. Evaluation helps teachers understand what went well and what needs improvement by considering student learning, teaching processes, and outcomes. Key aspects to evaluate include lesson objectives and content, teaching strategies, student participation and skills application, and overall lesson effectiveness. Multiple sources can inform evaluation, including self-reflection, student and peer feedback, and assessment results. Ongoing evaluation is critical for continuous improvement and high-quality teaching.
The document discusses the role of instructional leadership in schools. It defines instructional leadership as guiding and inspiring teachers to improve the learning process. Effective instructional leadership can have a dramatic influence on student achievement. Some key aspects of instructional leadership include setting goals, providing resources to teachers, coordinating curriculum and instruction, promoting teacher development, and ensuring an orderly environment conducive to learning. The document emphasizes that a focus on classroom instruction and teaching practices is vital for school improvement efforts.

Our first case study in Artesia, New Mexico was done in 2008. This case study updates their PD 360 use, plus the addition of Common Core 360 and Observation 360, components of the Educator Effectiveness System. Read about how their continued use has improved differentiated instruction and created effective questioning.
“When I am asked about PD 360, Common Core 360, and Observation 360, I only say ‘Let me show you the data.’ The Educator Effectiveness System speaks for itself and the word is getting around.”

A rural school district in West Virginia improved instructional strategies and differentiated teaching by implementing the Learning 360 Framework along with other programs from School Improvement Network. The Title I Director saw positive results from teachers who felt supported rather than overwhelmed. Test scores increased substantially at two Title I schools over several years after adopting these programs. The Director concluded that the framework provided sustainable progress by supporting best practices and the Common Core standards.
A survey of over 2,000 educators found:
- 96% believed they were effective educators, though some noted areas for improvement.
- 89% believed their colleagues were effective.
- 52% believed the public education system is failing.
- Only 11% believed parents are doing enough to help their children succeed in school.
In October 2012, School Improvement Network surveyed educators nationwide about the impact of class size on educator effectiveness and student achievement. 5,115 educators responded, and 65% said their class sizes have grown over the last three years. Educators also shared their opinions on the ideal class size, and how class sizes impact students and their teachers.

In January 2012, School Improvement Network surveyed educators nationwide about the rising pressure of teacher evaluations and high-stakes student testing. More than 4,000 educators responded and overwhelmingly agreed that teacher evaluations help them grow as professionals (91%), but including high-stakes student test scores in evaluations is unfair (85%). 60% of educators also supported using evaluations as criteria for firing or tenure decisions.

In October 2012, School Improvement Network surveyed educators from across the nation to find out the use and effects of technology in classrooms. 6,929 educators from all 50 states shared how technology is being used in their classroom and how it’s affecting students. Among the findings, 48% of educators say they allow students to bring and use technology devices in their classroom, and 80% of educators believe technology in the classroom increases student performance. One in 3 educators email students as part of their learning platform, and of those, 75% say it affects their homework return rate.
Educator Pay Survey
In January 2013, School Improvement Network conducted a national survey of educators to find out educator perceptions about pay, work hours, and opportunities for increased educational opportunities and salary increases. 5,068 educators responded from 46 states. On average, educators reported working an average of 12 hours a day, with 70% feeling they were fairly compensated for their work. 81% of educators said they have pursued additional training or certification to increase salary. Only 23% of educators state that they would alter their teaching methods if a bonus were given for improved student performance.
The survey found that most parents support the Common Core State Standards despite some misconceptions about their origin and role. 62% of parents surveyed support the Standards while 22% oppose them. Parents who support the Standards believe it ensures all children learn from a unified curriculum and facilitates better education, while those who oppose think it does not address different student needs and rates of learning. Many parents incorrectly believe the federal government created the Standards rather than state governments and experts. The survey revealed shared misconceptions among parents with differing views, including beliefs that the Standards mandate specific lessons rather than curriculum and that student data like health records will be collected, rather than just performance data.

more evident. A crucial element of this impact is the alteration of vegetation cover, which plays a
significant role in maintaining the ecological equilibrium of our planet.Land serves as the foundation for all human activities and provides the necessary materials for
these activities. As the most crucial natural resource, its utilization by humans results in different
'Land uses,' which are determined by both human activities and the physical characteristics of the
land.
The utilization of land is impacted by human needs and environmental factors. In countries
like India, rapid population growth and the emphasis on extensive resource exploitation can lead
to significant land degradation, adversely affecting the region's land cover.
Therefore, human intervention has significantly influenced land use patterns over many
centuries, evolving its structure over time and space. In the present era, these changes have
accelerated due to factors such as agriculture and urbanization. Information regarding land use and
cover is essential for various planning and management tasks related to the Earth's surface,
providing crucial environmental data for scientific, resource management, policy purposes, and
diverse human activities.
Accurate understanding of land use and cover is imperative for the development planning
of any area. Consequently, a wide range of professionals, including earth system scientists, land
and water managers, and urban planners, are interested in obtaining data on land use and cover
changes, conversion trends, and other related patterns. The spatial dimensions of land use and
cover support policymakers and scientists in making well-informed decisions, as alterations in
these patterns indicate shifts in economic and social conditions. Monitoring such changes with the
help of Advanced technologies like Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems is
crucial for coordinated efforts across different administrative levels. Advanced technologies like

Changes in vegetation cover refer to variations in the distribution, composition, and overall
structure of plant communities across different temporal and spatial scales. These changes can
occur natural.

TRANSITION – SUGGESTS ANOTHER BALANCING ACT.
Balancing Act
Lets look at one of our themes. How did we go about identifying these themes?
Its in the introduction – College and Career Readiness Its found in multiple standards – Anchor Standards
Let’s look at one themeHere are some indicators from Dimensions 4 and 8 that support the theme
AVAILABLE THROUGH THOUGHTFUL CLASSROOM PD 360 GROUP
POLL – DUAL ROLE
Not just about evaluatingAbout growth and improvement
TRANSITION --- Let’s imagine the process. You’re a teacher You’re an administrator….
PROTOCOLS ARE CRITICAL
NOTE – THOUGHTFUL CLASSROOM PD 360 GROUP
Here is Dimension 5 – Preparing Students for New Learning Lets look at what’s in the template
Come back to rubricitis theme. Numerous frameworks immediately force a 1-4 judgment for each and every indicator.Gets in the way of the formative process. All we’re asking the observer to do is collect data. Gera Summerford, president of the Tennessee Education Association, compared the new evaluations to taking your car to the mechanic and making him use all of his tools to fix it, regardless of the problem, and expecting him to do it in an hour.
Notice the student behaviors.Student behaviors are a result of the teacher behaviors. The question you’re asking yourself is …. What impact did teaching have on student learning behaviors?

Here is Dimension 5 from our framework. This is a result of a conversation between administrator and teacher who have selected the following videos to work on to enhance his/her practice related to preparing students for new learning.
Now that we have seen the formative observation tools lets take a look at the summative evaluation tools.
Depending on state or district, rubrics can be customizedSummative evaluation is informed by observations, walkthroughs, and teacher self-assessment
You’ll notice four levels in this rubric: Expert, Proficient, Developing, Novice.research shows it takes 10,000 hours + feedback + practice Small changes proven to have dramatic impact on student learning. Lets take a closer look at the rubric.
Rubrics for classroom practice highlight Three areasCommitment - how committed is this teacher to the overall dimension and enhancing their expertise?Use of relevant practices impact on student learning.
