Education of the 21st century MLIS student for technical agility.Steven MacCall
MLIS professors focused on health library education are continually faced with challenge of preparing their students for personal and social media technology use for entering an ever more sophisticated professional workforce. The objective of this paper is to describe identified barriers and the instructional strategies to overcome them in order to facilitate technological agility for the MLIS students taking a health librarianship course (LS534) at the University of Alabama School of Library and Information Studies (UA SLIS) between 2007 and 2012. "Technological agility" pertains to the capability of students to easily and invisibly ("without thinking about it") deploy networked personal and social technologies after course instruction on those technologies.
Since 2007, students enrolled the LS 534 Health Librarianship course at UA SLIS have received course instruction pertaining to the required adoption and use of networked personal and social technologies interwoven into the context of the pedagogical goals and various assignments of the course. Additionally, each student was required to compose an informal two page description of their impressions of the use of these technologies. This paper will report on the types of required networked personal and social technologies required for the course and how they changed during the period of the study (2007-2012). Additionally, results of a content analysis of the student impressions assignment over the time period will be presented with particular interest in evaluating comments related to agility defined as ease of use and invisibility.
Identified barriers to technological agility included the “why” question (why is this tool important?), reluctance in adopting technological innovation, and concerns relating to digital divide issues. Pedagogical methods included linking tool use to specific course communication needs, immersion after tool instruction, playful approach to interacting with technologies to minimize stress of adoption, and emphasis on importance of networked personal and social technologies in building distributed communities of colleagues. Also for those students who brought experience with personal technology and social media use to the course, stress was placed on the importance of understanding these technologies well enough to provide instruction on their use.

This presentation will consider the recent development of library and information science as an academic discipline, and the consequent changes required to library school curricula, in order to prepare professional practitioners for employment in today’s information society. These changes, led primarily by technological developments, include the need for consideration of new forms of documents, new methods of dissemination, new information behaviour patterns and increasing demand for novel information architectures. Alongside changes in technology, we can see the emergence of overlap with companion disciplines such as the digital humanities, and these must be accommodated, alongside more obvious connections, such as those with computer science. In conclusion from all of this, we can see that a course focused solely on traditional workplace skills will be insufficient for today’s portfolio-based workforce. We must have an emphasis on thinking skills, new literacies, and resilience, so that we prepare our graduates for employment beyond their first position.

Working Together evolving library value: initial findingsSAGE Publishing
‘Working together: evolving value for academic libraries’ is a six-month research project investigating the value of academic libraries for teaching and research staff. SAGE commissioned LISU to undertake the research in December 2011. Now halfway through the project, two UK case studies are complete, and those in US and Scandinavia are underway.
Some initial results have been compiled into a short presentation to coincide with the UKSG conference.
Marie O' Neill explores the expansion of DBS Library's research support services. She discusses key developments during this process including the production of a research development plan, the establishment of a research librarian post, the setting up of an institutional repository and the recent acquisition of Ebsco's Plumx software. The presentation also discusses the impetus, challenges and benefits of this expansion.

The major influence on library futures is the changing character of their user communities. As patterns of research, learning and personal development change in a network environment so library services need to change. At the same time, libraries are focused on engaging with their communities more strongly - getting into their work and learning flows. This means that libraries are becoming more unlike each other, they are diverging as they meet the specific needs of their communities. Research libraries diverge from academic libraries, and each is different from urban public libraries, and so on.
At the same time, at a broader level libraries are experiencing similar pressures. The need to engage more strongly with their communities. The need to assess what they do. The need to configure space around experiences rather than around collections. Libraries are converging around some of these issues.
This presentation will consider the future of libraries from the point of view of convergence and divergence between types of libraries.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
