This document discusses OpenEdition's freemium business model for scholarly publishing. OpenEdition is an international open access platform based in Europe that disseminates research in the humanities and social sciences. Their freemium model provides free access to content online, while libraries can subscribe to premium services like access to PDFs and usage statistics. After three years, the model involves over 100 subscribing libraries and supports over 50 publishers and 137 journals. Revenues from the premium services go towards sustaining open access publication. The model aims to increase sustainability, adapt to HSS needs, and boost the impact of open access research.
