The use of conditional means that one action depends on another. Conditionals
are used to talk about real or unreal situations. In general, conditional phrases
carry the word "if".
Keep in mind that there is no verb tense for the English conditional as it exists in
Spanish. At the same time, the auxiliary verb "would" is used to form the
conditional in English.
-There are four types of conditional phrases and the use of one or
the other reflects the probability of the action.
*Zero Conditional
*First Conditional
*Second Conditional
*Third Conditional
This type of conditional is used when the condition and the result is always true,
such as scientific facts.
Examples:
1) If you heat water to 100 ° C, it boils. / Water boils if you heat it to 100 ° C.
2) If I do not practice the piano everyday I play poorly. / I play the piano poorly if I
do not practice everyday.
3) Does your mom get mad if you do not call her? / If you do not call your mom,
does she get mad?
Examples:
1) If you to , it
2) If I everyday, I play
3)Does you mom get if you don’t her?
This type of conditional is used for the future and in cases where it is very
likely that the condition will pass.
Examples:
1) If Bill studies, he will pass the exam. / Bill will pass the exam if he
studies.
2) If it doesn’t rain, we will go to the beach. / We will go to the beach if it
doesn’t rain.
3) Will you take the train if you miss the bus? If you miss the bus, will you
take the train?
Examples:
1) If Bill , he will pass the
2) If it doesn’t , we will go to the
3) Will you take the if you miss the ?
-Type 2 is used to express an unreal possibility in the present, such as a wish or a
dream, or for an action in the not-so-probable future.
Examples:
1) I won the lottery, I would travel around the world. / I would travel around
the world if I won the lottery.
2)If Rachel had more time, she would learn to play the guitar. / Rachel would
learn to play the guitar if she had more time.
3)Would you be happy if you were to get married? / If you were to get
married, would you be happy?
Examples:
1) If I won the , I would around the
2) If Rachel had more , she would learn to
3)Would you be if you were to get ?
-Unlike types 1 and 2, the third type of conditional is used when we talk
about a condition in the past that has not happened.
Examples:
-If I had known then what I know now, I would have done things differently.
-Suzanne wouldn’t have had the if she had gone on a diet as her
recommended.
-Would you have liked to go to university if you had been able to afford it?
