Computer Access for Students with Disabilities: An Adaptive Technology Laboratory H. İbrahim ÇAKIR
Adaptive Technology Laboratory -> Introduction + Problem s + Solution + Developing the Project + Creating the Laboratory + Impact on the University + Conclusion The number of students with disabilities who are studying or want to study at a university is increasing. These students are searching for the most “independent” and “ normal” college experience possible. In order to make this a reality, students with visual, orthopedic, and learning disabilities must have access to computers which meet their needs i.e., computers that use the latest adaptive technology .
Adaptive Technology Laboratory + Introduction -> Problem s + Solution + Developing the Project + Creating the Laboratory + Impact on the University + Conclusion According to researches ; Students with disabilities have some problem because environment such as classes, labs are not suitable for their use. Gathering statistics on the population of students with disabilities is a hard work. Students are often embarrassed to identify themselves as having a disability. Universities do not have enough substructure and support for those students. -> -> ->
Adaptive Technology Laboratory + Introduction + Problem s -> Solution + Developing the Project + Creating the Laboratory + Impact on the University + Conclusion An Adaptive Technology Laboratory, staffed with support personnel, both special education and technical, provides students with disabilities the tools with which to perform their work. More importantly, it enables them to develop the necessary independence that leads to increased productivity, self-esteem and ultimately access to careers in computer science.
Adaptive Technology Laboratory + Introduction + Problem s + Solution -> Developing the Project + Creating the Laboratory + Impact on the University + Conclusion Developing an Adaptive Technology Lab recognizes as important the full inclusion of people with disabilities in all aspects of campus life, including computer use. It advances the skills of undergraduate students with disabilities who want to use computers, creating an independent learning environment and, as a result, new employment possibilities for them in the future.
Adaptive Technology Laboratory + Introduction + Problem s + Solution + Developing the Project -> Creating the Lab + Impact on the University + Conclusion There were two steps in creating this laboratory: 1. finding a space The lab place must be on the center of the campus so students can easily access the lab. 2. ordering the necessary equipment. The materials in the lab such as computers, worktables have to be quite easy to use by students and they have to be adaptable for the variety of the disability.
Adaptive Technology Laboratory + Introduction + Problem s + Solution + Developing the Project -> Creating the Lab -> Ergonomics + Alternative Input + Adaptations for the Visually Impaired + Impact on the University + Conclusion -> adjustable height work tables -> wheelchairs -> chairs which have adjustable arms and backs
Adaptive Technology Laboratory + Introduction + Problem s + Solution + Developing the Project -> Creating the Lab + Ergonomics -> Alternative Input + Adaptations for the Visually Impaired + Impact on the University + Conclusion Device How works or benefits The Advanced Magic Wand miniature electronic keyboard Students hold a stylus and use very small motions to type on this keyboard Head Mouse and Tracker Students manipulate the keyboard with slight head movements WiVik Onscreen Keyboard the user enter text into Windows 3.1 applications with any pointing device WmP provides word prediction and abbreviation expansion powers Power Secretary provides speech input to the Mac Dragon Dictate provides speech input to the IBM
Adaptive Technology Laboratory + Introduction + Problem s + Solution + Developing the Project -> Creating the Lab + Ergonomics + Alternative Input -> Adaptations for the Visually Impaired + Impact on the University + Conclusion Device How works or benefits The Spectrum Jr. allows the user to adjust the magnification and color of the text or graphics that he/she is reading Zoom Caps Key Labels enlarged keyboard character labels that come in white on black and black on white Magic Deluxe screen enlarger program magnify text 2,4,6,8, and 12 times and is adjustable
Adaptive Technology Laboratory + Introduction + Problem s + Solution + Developing the Project + Creating the Laboratory -> Impact on University + Conclusion There can be some problems when establishing that type of laboratory because of funding. But we have to think that these labs can be very useful for students’ evaluations and assesments on certain software and hardware .
Adaptive Technology Laboratory + Introduction + Problem s + Solution + Developing the Project + Creating the Laboratory + Impact on the University -> Conclusion Although it may not be possible for every computer laboratory on campus to be equipped with adaptive tools, there should be at least one networked facility where students with disabilities are able to access campus technology. The most important thing that every student have to have the same opportunity, we have to think other students especially students with disabilities.
