How are today's IT skills matching up to industry's workforce needs?
To get high school students ready for the business world, they need access to internships. Most companies target their internships at college students, but to truly get more students invested in a tech career, the industry needs to work with students long before they’ve embarked on a college education.
Internships are a powerful way to provide full immersion in the world of work with responsibility for real, necessary tasks that matter to an employer. They provide the experience that can prepare students to successfully begin a career in their chosen field.
To give that opportunity to more high school students, schools and employers can build upon the 4Ps of internship, as developed by the Creating IT Futures Foundation: project for the student to work on that's both challenging and valued, place for the student to work on the project, personnel who will care about and supervise the intern, and payment, preferably in monetary value, to the students for the work they do.
Employers and schools can collaborate to innovate the internship model so that it works for both the student and the employer. The Creating IT Futures Foundation has developed models for 4 types of internships that employers can implement to create student internships.

The document discusses challenges faced by IT teams in big data projects. It finds that 55% of big data projects are not completed due to inaccurate scoping, technical roadblocks, and siloed data. Only 6% of enterprises list big data as a top 10 IT priority. When it comes to analytics projects, the top reasons for failure are lack of expertise to connect insights and lack of business context. Real-time and batch analytics are both important. The most significant challenges for big data projects are finding the right tools and allocating time. IT teams believe data scientists, application developers, and business users can most impact revenue through increased access to enterprise data.
Most businesses surveyed seek to improve their use of information technology. While many view technology as important to business success, few feel they are exactly where they want to be in terms of effectiveness and efficiency. Common priorities include security, data management, infrastructure updates, and mobility initiatives. Many businesses also report challenges with information technology skills gaps and hiring qualified staff. The majority expect certifications to increase in importance and value for demonstrating expertise.
This document summarizes the key points from Sanjeev Bhagowalia's presentation on transforming Hawaii's state government IT and information resource management (IRM). It discusses conducting an assessment that found aging technology and processes, resource shortages, and disconnected efforts across departments. The presentation recommends focusing first on 4 areas: enterprise focus, governance, reengineering business processes, and strengthening technical infrastructure. It identifies candidates for early cross-cutting enterprise solutions and lays out a notional transformation framework and schedule. The goal is providing access to the right information securely and reliably across the state.
Day 2 aziz apj aziz_big_datakeynote_pressIntelAPAC
This document summarizes Aziz Safa's presentation on Intel's adoption of big data, cloud, and IoT technologies. It discusses how innovative companies are leveraging big data to create disruptive business models and enhance customer experience. Lower costs of computing and storage as well as the growth of unstructured data are driving big data adoption. However, only a small percentage of available data is currently being analyzed due to legacy techniques being insufficient. Intel proposes a unified big data approach to capture, store, manage, and analyze all data types. Advanced analytics applied to big data can provide a competitive advantage if companies build the right skills and move quickly.
The document discusses how IT has become essential to driving business results and revenue. However, a survey found that 80% of CIOs feel that management lacks digital literacy, which can lead to missed opportunities. Additionally, 39% said the board does not understand IT's value. To address this, the document recommends that companies (1) recognize the CIO's important role in driving innovation, (2) free up IT resources from maintenance to focus on growth, and (3) reduce security risks to unlock IT's potential to transform the business.
The document summarizes the agenda and topics to be covered at the SoftSummit 2011 conference. It includes:

Dandelion Hashtable: beyond billion requests per second on a commodity serverAntonios Katsarakis
This slide deck presents DLHT, a concurrent in-memory hashtable. Despite efforts to optimize hashtables, that go as far as sacrificing core functionality, state-of-the-art designs still incur multiple memory accesses per request and block request processing in three cases. First, most hashtables block while waiting for data to be retrieved from memory. Second, open-addressing designs, which represent the current state-of-the-art, either cannot free index slots on deletes or must block all requests to do so. Third, index resizes block every request until all objects are copied to the new index. Defying folklore wisdom, DLHT forgoes open-addressing and adopts a fully-featured and memory-aware closed-addressing design based on bounded cache-line-chaining. This design offers lock-free index operations and deletes that free slots instantly, (2) completes most requests with a single memory access, (3) utilizes software prefetching to hide memory latencies, and (4) employs a novel non-blocking and parallel resizing. In a commodity server and a memory-resident workload, DLHT surpasses 1.6B requests per second and provides 3.5x (12x) the throughput of the state-of-the-art closed-addressing (open-addressing) resizable hashtable on Gets (Deletes).
