The ability to view and interact with CGM graphics is a crucial task for many companies and organizations. The ability to view graphics is just one of the requirements, also important is the capability to convert to additional file formats. Also, the facility to print is equally significant, especially to larger format devices, a requirement in the Oil and Gas industry.
Our popular annual workshop, CGM and SVG is back in 2019. The experience we’ve gained over the past year has been invaluable, especially the conversion from CGM to SVG. We will update the participants on the current status of the two formats and our strategy to support the technology and end-users.

Developing the Next Generation Embedded HMIs – Phil Burr
With more and more people using smartphones it is no surprise that more and more people are demanding better HMIs in other products: whether it is in their set top box, refrigerator, or car, users have come to expect graphically rich dynamic HMIs. This is all very well, but what is a humble developer to do when confronted with the constraints of their embedded device. This presentation examines the options for embedded developers needing to implement these latest HMIs and looks at tools and techniques which can help developers meet or exceed their customer’s HMI expectations.

The transformation of graphical data plays a significant role in the production of technical publications. Invariably the source graphical information is not suitable for direct inclusion in a technical publication. The data will usually require some post processing either to change its electronic file format or add value to enable the user to interaction.
Technical Graphics data can originate from many different sources and as a result be in stored and exchanged in varying formats. The best practice is to manage and store the data in an open, quality and reliable electronic format.
David Manock, the VP Sales and Marketing, will introduce and present our latest webinar.
As we build up to the 2018 S1000D User Forum in New Orleans, the timing is probably right to provide a refresher on the requirement for compliant graphics. Join us for an overview of the specification, issue 4.2, what’s new and some considerations when implementing a 2D graphics strategy.

Globus Compute wth IRI Workflows - GlobusWorld 2024Globus
As part of the DOE Integrated Research Infrastructure (IRI) program, NERSC at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab and ALCF at Argonne National Lab are working closely with General Atomics on accelerating the computing requirements of the DIII-D experiment. As part of the work the team is investigating ways to speedup the time to solution for many different parts of the DIII-D workflow including how they run jobs on HPC systems. One of these routes is looking at Globus Compute as a way to replace the current method for managing tasks and we describe a brief proof of concept showing how Globus Compute could help to schedule jobs and be a tool to connect compute at different facilities.
Enhancing Research Orchestration Capabilities at ORNL.pdfGlobus
Cross-facility research orchestration comes with ever-changing constraints regarding the availability and suitability of various compute and data resources. In short, a flexible data and processing fabric is needed to enable the dynamic redirection of data and compute tasks throughout the lifecycle of an experiment. In this talk, we illustrate how we easily leveraged Globus services to instrument the ACE research testbed at the Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility with flexible data and task orchestration capabilities.

Graspan: A Big Data System for Big Code AnalysisAftab Hussain
We built a disk-based parallel graph system, Graspan, that uses a novel edge-pair centric computation model to compute dynamic transitive closures on very large program graphs.
We implement context-sensitive pointer/alias and dataflow analyses on Graspan. An evaluation of these analyses on large codebases such as Linux shows that their Graspan implementations scale to millions of lines of code and are much simpler than their original implementations.
These analyses were used to augment the existing checkers; these augmented checkers found 132 new NULL pointer bugs and 1308 unnecessary NULL tests in Linux 4.4.0-rc5, PostgreSQL 8.3.9, and Apache httpd 2.2.18.
- Accepted in ASPLOS ‘17, Xi’an, China.
- Featured in the tutorial, Systemized Program Analyses: A Big Data Perspective on Static Analysis Scalability, ASPLOS ‘17.
- Invited for presentation at SoCal PLS ‘16.
- Invited for poster presentation at PLDI SRC ‘16.

Providing Globus Services to Users of JASMIN for Environmental Data AnalysisGlobus
JASMIN is the UK’s high-performance data analysis platform for environmental science, operated by STFC on behalf of the UK Natural Environment Research Council (NERC). In addition to its role in hosting the CEDA Archive (NERC’s long-term repository for climate, atmospheric science & Earth observation data in the UK), JASMIN provides a collaborative platform to a community of around 2,000 scientists in the UK and beyond, providing nearly 400 environmental science projects with working space, compute resources and tools to facilitate their work. High-performance data transfer into and out of JASMIN has always been a key feature, with many scientists bringing model outputs from supercomputers elsewhere in the UK, to analyse against observational or other model data in the CEDA Archive. A growing number of JASMIN users are now realising the benefits of using the Globus service to provide reliable and efficient data movement and other tasks in this and other contexts. Further use cases involve long-distance (intercontinental) transfers to and from JASMIN, and collecting results from a mobile atmospheric radar system, pushing data to JASMIN via a lightweight Globus deployment. We provide details of how Globus fits into our current infrastructure, our experience of the recent migration to GCSv5.4, and of our interest in developing use of the wider ecosystem of Globus services for the benefit of our user community.

Working with the Pharmacology group at the University of Auckland, we have previously written an application using Globus Compute that can offload computationally expensive steps in the researcher's workflows, which they wish to manage from their familiar Windows environments, onto the NeSI (New Zealand eScience Infrastructure) cluster. Some of the challenges we have encountered were that each researcher had to set up and manage their own single-user globus compute endpoint and that the workloads had varying resource requirements (CPUs, memory and wall time) between different runs. We hope that the multi-user endpoint will help to address these challenges and share an update on our progress here.

Introduction
• The viewing of CGM graphics can be neatly split into two disciplines
• Standalone
• Technology
• Standalone – The Viewer application is installed on a specific
computer or mobile device to view graphics
• Technology – The Viewer, using a Software Development Kit (SDK) is
embedded inside solution (Internet), enabling the display of graphics

The Requirement – Standalone Viewer
• The primary requirement is to View the CGM or TIFF graphic
• Usually some interaction with the graphic is required
• However, the ability to convert to other file formats, and print the
graphic is also important
• Convert – Requiring another file type for data exchange scenarios
• Print – Although we are moving away from a print paradigm this is still a
useful function, particularly large format printing E.G. Presentations

View
• Why do we need to view CGM graphics?
• There are various scenarios where this task is required
• View CGM graphics
• embedded in an interactive manual
• in a web environment
• on mobile devices, iOS and Android
• Exchanging data from other systems where the CGM is a supported
export format
• Displaying Seismic data and well log data maps
• Quality Assurance, the ability to view and also markup the graphic

Convert – Data Exchange
• Why do we need to convert or create CGM graphics?
• The requirement is about differing data exchange scenarios
• Open a CGM file, save into another format for onward use
• Objective, create a file for use in an environment not supporting CGM
• E.G. Microsoft Office
• Open another file format, e.g. DWG, and save as a CGM
• Objective, create a usable file
DWG
TIFF
EMF
JPG PNG

Print
• Why do we need to print CGM graphics?
• The ability to print is a significant function of a viewer
• So what are the scenarios?
• Print hard copy for internal and external reports
• Print to PDF, also another possible data exchange scenario
• Print to large format devices for presentation purposes

The Requirement – Embedded Viewing Technology
• Larson also provides Viewer Software Developments Kits (SDK’s)
• The objective view CGM files in a proprietary solution or more commonly a
web browser-based solution
• Internet or Intranet solution
• This could be and Interactive Electronic Technical Manual
• The ability to view the graphic but also interact is paramount
• Traditionally the viewing of CGM files in a web was achieved via a plug-in
technology
• Browsers are stopping the support of plug-ins mainly down to security issues
• The result, use an alternative file format or technology
• HTML5 is the real game changer for internet content

• We still offer this technology and support and maintain our customer base
• We recommend new customers evaluate the VizEx View HTML5 technology
• Why is the technology now unpopular?
• Plug-in weaknesses
• Had to be installed on the target computer
• Strongly criticized for creating security issues
• In some organizations, they would require IT accreditation
• Browser Support
• Only Internet Explorer still supports ActiveX
• The Microsoft Edge browser – support was dropped
• Good indication the technology will be phased out
• Chrome blocked plug-ins in 2016
• Firefox still supports plug-ins
• Future strategy unknown
• A CGM viewing solution with no reliance on a plug-in will be beneficial
