Calfee And CAFE Standards
CAFE is an acronym for Corporate Average Fuel Economy. As stated in, Will Corporate Average Fuel
Economy Help, CAFÉ standards became prevalent by Congress in 1975 after the oil crisis of the 1970 s.
These standards were proposed in order to help the United States depend less on foreign oil (Sen et al.
2017, p. 279). The idea of CAFÉ standards does not only help us rely less on foreign oil, but it also
reduces greenhouse gas emissions. Below general information about CAFÉ and the CAFÉ standards that
are current today will be described. As described above, CAFÉ was first introduced after the 1973 oil
crisis. Congress needed to find solutions to reduce our reliance on oil imported from other countries.

Today, lightweight cars are not seen as an issue because of the advancements we have made in technology.
However, during the mid 1970 s to 1980 s, consumers were correlating that the rise in automobile
fatalities was correlated to CAFÉ s standards with fuel efficiency. During this time of concern, it was
concluded that better fuel efficiency could be accomplished by technologies that were available at the time
and these technologies would not change the weight of the automobile (Schmidt 2002, pg.468).
Technology is always advancing. During the time of safety concerns, people did not necessarily realize
that improved technology would be launched in the years to come (Bezdek and Wendling 2003, p. 409).
How have CAFÉ standards progressed and what are the requirements for new car models? Starting in
May of 2010, former President Barack Obama, the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration
(NHTSA), and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), all administered Final Rules for automobiles
built in 2017 through 2021 (United States Department of Transportation 2014). The regulations were
aimed towards CAFÉ and Greenhouse Gas emissions for cars and light trucks. Along with cars and light
trucks, there were also regulations set in place for medium and heavy duty trucks. The only difference is
that the heavier trucks are years 2014 to 2018. Cars and light trucks will have to have an average,

Martin Luther King, Jr. and Lyndon B. Johnson
Martin Luther King, Jr. and Lyndon B. Johnson demonstrated unimaginable leadership skills in an effort
to accomplish their respective agendas. Through the use of moral leadership, King would rise to become
the head of the Civil Rights Movement by means of civil disobedience and nonviolent resistance. MLK
began as a Baptist Minister, but after seeing the difference he could make in the world, decided to stand up
for what he felt was right. Johnson, on the other hand, used political leadership in order to make a name
for himself as President of the United States. LBJ was willing to do whatever it took to accomplish his
goals, even if it meant going against the Southern Democrats who had elected him to political office. One

Niebuhr believed that the world was full of evils and oppressions that individuals needed to fight against.
People should not stand back and allow the horrors around them to continue, but instead fight back in
whatever way they can. MLK would take these teachings and apply them to his ideas of Gandhi s
nonviolent protests. Individuals who are in the minority, and thus unable to take drastic action, would
benefit from the use of nonviolence. This strategy would allow Black Americans to seek justice and
equality without truly disturbing the current relationship with White Americans. King s plan was to allow
his religious and political ideals to run on the same moral edge, something that Reinhold Niebuhr had
surely allowed for in his ideology (Branch, 81 7). Martin Luther King, Jr. was able to use this religious
and moral idea of nonviolence to unite Black Americans who were tired of their oppression. Violence and
drastic action had proven to arguably make their situation worse, meaning that something as different as
peaceful civil disobedience could prove to work. By the time of the 1963 I Have a Dream speech at the
March on Washington, King had become the voice of the various perspectives of life as a Black American.
He now expressed the universal voice of all his people, and he was not afraid to use it in the pursuit of
equality for Blacks (Branch, 881 3). Martin Luther King s Birmingham campaign would prove to be the

Smoking and The Human Body Essay examples
Smoking is a bad habit which plagues the young, as well as the old. It is the largest source of preventable
mortality in North America1. Not only does smoking lead to an early grave, but it can also influence one s
daily life. Many studies have revealed links between smoking and reduced endurance capacity2. Nicotine,
the addictive agent found in cigarettes, can also be used to control weight gain.
Both of these factors can have considerable effect on the sporting world. There have been many studies
done, indicating that if you smoked, you did less physical activity. It has also been shown that the more
you smoke, the less activity you do. In one experiment done on smokers and non smokers, the subjects

Many sports and activities require the athlete to do notable amounts of work and expend a fair amount of
energy.
When an athlete smokes, they will not be able to get the required oxygen to the necessary parts of the
body, and therefore will not perform as well. It has been proven that even if you have smoked, when you
quit smoking your levels of physical activity will increase8. When taking a glimpse of all the top athletes
in the world, it can be noted that none of them are frequent tobacco product users. Another aspect of
smoking and the human body is the effect of nicotine on body weight. Nicotine, the drug found in
cigarettes, is usually what tends to get smokers addicted to tobacco products. Through many different
experiments, it has been shown that smokers tend to weigh less than non smokers9.
These tests were done not only by measurement of weight, but by multiple skinfold thickness assessments.
In a study done on rats, it was determined that nicotine exposed rats had significantly less carcass fat,
suggesting that nicotine effects fat stores. The more nicotine which was given, the less fat the rats had. It
was hypothesized that nicotine effected these fat stores was by altering key enzymes in the regulation and
uptake of triglycerides such as adipose tissue lipoprotein lipase10. When dealing with humans, one study
found that smokers had 2.8% lower total body fat than non smokers11.

Aaron Hernandez
Why Did Aaron Hernandez Kill Odin Lloyd?
Aaron Hernandez a very youthful accomplished NFL player with a 40 million dollar contract will now be
serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole. This is all due to him being convicted of
murdering long term companion Odin Lloyd. In June of 2013 Lloyd was shot seven times and found dead
near the player s home. The prosecution had prodigious and significant amounts of evidence against
Hernandez. Surveillance video ten minutes after the murder shows surveillance of Aaron in his own home
walking with what resembles a gun. Text messages from Lloyd and Hernandez shows intent from them
meeting up with each other that same momentous night. The only part missing out of this case in the
motive. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One example is the image on Hernandez holding a black object that appeared to be a gun. Although no
one could tell for sure what this object was, more than likely it was a gun. The prosecution had
government experts and lay witnesses to present to the jurors that this was more than likely a gun. Other
evidence introduced was a pair of red sneakers earlier on in the trial. Jurors didn t know what was so
important about this evidence but once the prosecution explained about the foot tracks later on this made
sense. So the jury had to go back to the evidence that they were presented earlier and put the clues
together to perceive the evidence. Now the million dollar question is why this talented NFL player
committed such crimes with a 40 million dollar contract at risk. What happened that made him so angry?
Odin Lloyd knew a lot about Hernandez it seems that the more people know about him the more
suspicious he gets. Aaron seems to have a paranoid type of personality partly from his drug usage with
angle dust and marijuana. His brain doesn t function properly while he is on these drug making him
quickly flustered and always thinking someone is out to get him or disrespect him. This successful NFL
player is convicted of murdering his close friend also he is fighting two more first degree murder charges.

Themes In Shakespeare s Comedy Of Errors By William...
The lights dim, the audience is quiet, and the characters begin to gather on the stage. The audience finds
themselves in the middle of New York City, captivated by the seriousness of the actors. A girl in a trench
coat, who is revealed as the duke, sits down in a chair with two people at her side. Distraught and
aggravated, a boy with grayed hair and a cane comes out, who says his name is Egeon. The story begins
through this tense and uptight interaction between the characters, and suddenly the audience finds
themselves lost in the ideas of Shakespeare. Comedy of Errors, an enthralling and entertaining play
written by William Shakespeare, contains a riveting and unique storyline. The story begins with the
forlorn idea of a father trying to discover and reunite his family who was split apart by a shipwreck.
Egeon, who is introduced in the first act, is the father of two twins named Antipholus of Ephesus and
Antipholus of Syracuse. Antipholus of Ephesus has grown up with his father, but his long lost twin has
been off living his own life. Along with this set of twins, comes their servants Dromio of Ephesus and
Dromio of Syracuse who are also twins and unaware of each other. The humor in this play lies in the fact
that both sets of twins and Egeon are all in the same city, but are oblivious to this throughout the play. The
plot continues to progress through the multiple interactions the twins and their servants have with other
characters. Throughout these encounters, the other

Hector And Jason
In Home rs eipic The Illiad , The charcters Achilles, Hector, Medea, and Jason all had some great
characteristics and also had not so great characteristics that eventually led to each of their down falls.
Hector is the great warrior of the Trojan army, he fights with might and vigor, but often lets his impulsive
behavior get in the way of good decision making. Achilles is the leader of the Achean army, he has
glimpse of greatness but often lets his anger get in the way of decisions. Medea is the princess of Colchis,
she uses revenge and her cleverness in order to get things she wants. Jason is from Iolcus, his poor
decision making could most likely give him the role of a villian. Jason is a weak man and only does things
to further himself in life. Although these characters all have good qualites about them, the flaws are what
lead them to their downfalls.
Hector was the great warrior of the Trojan army. He lead the Trojan army into to battle with the Achean
army. His level of pride was very high after setting fire to the Archean ship, and killing Patroclus. After
this battle his confidence was tremendously boosted, which caused a problem later on in the epic. His over

the King of Corinth, Creon s beautiful daughter. Jason feels like marrying her will get him further in in

would have never killed his new wife or their own children. Jason really only thought about himself and

Suicide is the act of deliberately killing oneself. According to World Health Organization data most of the

disease control gave the suicide data as the tenth leading cause of death for all ages in 2010. One of the

In 19th century in Europe there is rapid increase in suicide. The case of death can be positive action such
as jumping from an upper window or negative action such as hunger strike. Durkheim eliminates
psychotic paranoid suicide because it is non sociological explanation of suicide and it is not the result of
self concise aim. The factor correlation between mental disorder and self destruction varies considerably.
Scotland had comparatively high level of lunacy but there is low level self destruction. While Saxony
showed a low level of lunacy but a high rate of self destruction. Alcohol addiction and substance abuse are
eliminated by Durkheim (Law, 2011, p.200). Undoubtedly, race itself is abolished as an irrational concept.
In the month of summer and at temperature degrees of latitude (50 55 degrees), there are more suicide
cases because when communion is most competency public, especially in urban areas. One of the causes
of non social associated to suicide that Durkheim examines is imitation. Durkheim differing the suicide
rates among protestant and catholic, he argues that stronger social control among catholic result in lower
suicide rates. According to Durkheim, catholic society has normal levels of integration while protestant
society has low levels. He says that suicide rates are higher in men than in women. Suicides rates are
higher among those who are not in relationship than those who are married. Because of the being single,
the women do not have children so there is more suicide case in

The Chemistry And Physic Of Either River Or Lake
I would like to phrase the question in another way, which is how would I determine the representative
sample and then accordingly what the constituents to be sampled?. As representative sample would be the
least number of data points required to give way a statistically precise picture of the water body being
analyzed. The chemistry and physic of either river or lake is a function of the substances that contact with
either in flowing or still water and how long been there with their exposure to the sunlight or wind. The
constituents from varied sources that are entering or leaving (river/lake) can be a function of the
hydrology and topography system. Water from sources such as direct/indirect precipitation, surface runoff
from snowmelt, or storm water from exposed rock or packed soil, or groundwater inflow from the aquifer
will react with the soil or bed/sedimentary rock and dissolved them (as the phenomena knowns weathering
condition). Therefore these variable sources can add a critical deposit into the river or lake (surface water)
constituents. For instance, many lakes and rivers sensitive to acidification due to the acid precipitation/
mine drainage, or to the atmospheric inputs such as (dust, SO4, NO3, Cl) leaving no time for
neutralization before reaching lakes and rivers. Further, seasonally variation for the snowmelt, dry period,
runoff, discharge can be explained by a plot of chemistry versus time or discharge depending upon the
site. Major cations such as H+ from pH

The Scottish Referendum For Independence
Abstract
The question I seek to answer in this essay is whether the Scottish Referendum for Independence from
18th September 2014 (hereafter referred as the 2014 Referendum ) was indeed a process that can give
account to legitimacy. This essay will look at legitimacy as being a moral claim set by our own culture. It
will also explore the meaning of overall legitimacy of the 2014 Referendum and if individual claims of
citizens are in conflict with it. Furthermore, it will argued that the political discourse of Alex Salmond and
of the Scottish National Party as a whole, was detrimental to the Scottish civil society as it facilitated its
division.
Scope of the question and its delimitation
This essay will solely give an account of the relatively of the 2014 Referendum s legitimacy and will
show that through non relative arguments coming from the SNP political discourse, the overall legitimacy
of the 2014 Referendum provides a prescriptive account on the devolution in so far. A notion that will not
be addressed by this essay is represented by the impact of the Scottish referendum for independence on
countries such as Spain and the states from the former Republic of Yugoslavia.
Disposition of the essay
In what follows a background of the referendum will be presented. Afterwards, it shall be argued that the
entire process for establishing the 2014 Referendum cannot be seen as a democratic one, as it is was
induced by the Yes Campaign consequently is logically flawed.

A Brief Summary Of The Banning Of Books
What Johnny Can t Read: Censorship In American Libraries
This article aimed to express the concerns and disappointments of those who are not pleased with the
banning of very popular books they loved as a children. These people do not agree with book banning
because in their times, when they were children, they were allowed to read whatever appealed to them.
Amongst these now banned books are; The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Black Beauty, Scary Stories
to Tell in the Dark, The Catcher in the Rye, as well as many other classic books. But this book banning is
not something fairly new. Book banning started in the early 1990s where by 1994, the demand for removal
of books had increased by more than 50%.

Descriptive Essay Of A Restaurant
Once I stepped inside the restaurant I automatically could hear the music playing at a moderate level and
the laughter of the customers. Right off the back the restaurant s ambiance had a positive vibe. Mindful, it
was a Saturday late afternoon. Mary Jane Burger and Brew is a local restaurant trying to stay true to its
past. The granddaughter of the original owner now runs the place with the intention of serving good
quality food where the ingredients are fresh, mouth watering, and surely not filled with antibiotics and all
that other genetically modified elements found in processed foods. The vintage, rustic looking place, holds
a small town atmosphere with a big taste.
The host sat my sister and I at a table in the middle of the dining area. A giant window let sunlight flood
into the room and the speakers provided a good backdrop of music to help engage conversation. The
restaurant itself seems fairly modern: leather seating, dark wood tables, and mason jar for glasses. It is the
epitome of a hang out spot for any teen, millennial, or elder meetup. The staff caters to the needs of the
customers and are always ready to help out in any way possible. I started the meal off with a glass of
sweet tea that never made it lower then the halfway point. The waitress was always there with a pitcher of
their home brewed sweet tea. The tea itself was not too sweet, it had the subtle taste of the bitterness that
tea should have. In other words it did not taste like someone dumped a bag

Authority In Unmistaken Child
Throughout the film, Unmistaken Child, there are many different people that are portrayed as having
authority. The main authority that is shown in this film comes from the rinpoches, but Tenzin Zopa and the

people. The rinpoches show traditional and some legal authority when dealing with the process of finding
the reincarnation of Geshe la. In Kessler s chapter, Organizing the Sacred, he describes what traditional

Is Jason Still Relevant Today
Myths of the heroes speak most eloquently of man s quest to choose life over death (Dorothy Norman).
Just like this quote reads, the myth of Jason gives choices that bring out the best and worst in his
character. Some of his decisions also determine the fate of others. Jason is a Greek mythological hero that
is give a quest to attain the Golden Fleece in order to rule his father s land. Through his difficult
encounters on his journey, he eventually retrieves the Fleece, but things do not go as well as he hoped. The
possible origin of the myth is common with many other myths during the time period. Over the years, the
myth has had several adaptations, but most of the key details have remained. Even today, the myth of

Many of the key points, however, have remained the same. Apollonius story was so popularly enjoyed that
it really has not changed greatly. The myth has only changed to adapt to the modern times (Lieberman).
As from the detailed summary before, there were crucial parts of the myth that are necessary in order for
the myth to flow easily. There have been a few adaptations of the myth throughout the years. More
recently, in the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries, a couple book and movie adaptations have been created. In
1867, The Life and Death of Jason written by British writer William Morris has many of the key aspects
of the myth in his book. There are only a small number of differences in the two. One difference is the
reason for Heracles disappearance. Morris most likely kept the same details as the myth, but added some
of his personal touch to it to appeal to his readers (Lieberman). Another adaptation of the myth is the first
movie adaptation called Jason and the Argonauts, made in 1963. The same relative story is found in the
movie, but some details were changed. In the movie, Jason meets Pelias by saving him in the river as he
was drowning. In the process, Jason loses a sandal. After saving Pelias, not realizing who he was, Jason
told him about his desire to rule Iolcus. Pelias tells him to retrieve the Golden Fleece and he would have

Emerson Materialism
When did materialism become such a deeply ingrained part of man s sense of self? Since the dawn of time
mankind has had an almost carnal desire to possess the unattainable. To conquer and claim without much
regard to moral obligation. To control and take whenever and whatever they pleased without much
consequence. Mankind is grappling with what it means to have a sense of self, because essentially, you are
what you own in modern society. Famed writer and poet Ralph Waldo Emerson explores the possible root
of mankind s infatuation with possessions in the following quote, Men have looked away from themselves
and at things so long that they have come to esteem the religious, learned and civil institutions as guards

Man wants esteem, so man turns away from God to possess worldly, materialistic objects. The possessive
need becomes bigger and bigger until suddenly it s not just esteem that man wants, it a need to sate the

ownership on himself after he purchases his own property with the earnings from his novel. He says in

interpretations about why they are buying those things. When people buy expensive things for themselves
it makes them seem self absorbed because others don t get to have the luxury of buying nice things for

Because Arab states, including Iraq, had in the past laid claim to Khuzestan as part of the Arab homeland,
the government was bound to regard an indigenous movement among the Arabic speaking population with
suspicion. The government also suspected that scattered instances of sabotage in the oil fields were
occurring with Iraqi connivance. In May 1979, government forces responded to these disturbances by
firing on Arab demonstrators in Khorramshahr.
Several demonstrators were killed; others were shot on orders of the local revolutionary court. The
government subsequently quietly transferred the religious leader of the Khuzestan Arabs, Ayatollah
Mohammad Taher Shubayr al Khaqani, to Qom, where he was kept under house arrest. These measures
ended further protests.
The Kurdish uprising proved more deep rooted, serious, and durable. The Kurdish leaders were
disappointed that the Revolution had not brought them the local autonomy they had long desired.
Scattered fighting began in March 1979 between government and Kurdish forces and continued after a
brief cease fire; attempts at negotiation proved abortive. One faction, led by Ahmad Muftizadeh, the
Friday prayer leader in Sanandaj, the capital of Kurdish culture, was ready to accept the limited
concessions offered by the government.
The Kurdish Democratic Party, a more radical group issued demands that the authorities in Tehran did not
feel they could accept.

A Man s Search For Meaning By Mor Frankl
Man s Search for Meaning A man s search for meaning is an autobiography written by author Viktor
Frankl. Viktor Frankl writes about spending three years in the concentration camps of Auschwitz, and
Dacha, all of this occurring during the Holocaust. The book discusses the theme of survival during a time
where horror and fear were all too common. Frankl uses a clear perspective by focusing on others tragic
stories and more or less on his own experience. Frankl describes the fundamental necessity of hope and
survival. Frankl s psychological theory is called logotherapy, this theory is mainly focused on a man s
search for meaning in human existence. In other words suffering exists in the world, and humans adapt
and gain meaning from that suffering. In Man s search for meaning Viktor Frankl uses specific and
detailed example during the holocaust to explain and further confirm his logo therapy theory, Frankl
demonstrates how suffering can lead to meaning in one s life.
In the first half of the book Frankl attempts to answer the question How is an average prisoner affected by
everyday life in the concentration camps? Frankl uses this question and demonstrates examples of other
prisoners who continued to find hope even in such horrific conditions. Furthermore, Frankl clarifies how
finding a meaning in a tragedy is of great ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Second Golden Era Of The Film Industry
The second golden era of the film industry, new hollywood, came about from 1969 through 1980. As the
1960 s started off positive and hopeful, there was now many Americans left devastated from the
depressing events that occurred after the assassination of John F. Kennedy, such as the Vietnam War.
There was also a conflict in the movie scene because Hollywood directors were torn between the old
styles of filming and the new techniques. By 1980, this conflict was finally resolved and a new hollywood
era was created. Although the old styles of filming still existed, new directors did not follow the
production code and decided to recreate genres. Directors also started to mix different genres together into
one film such as comedy, romance, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These thriller films were very mainstream and popular in the box office because they were targeted
towards adults under the age of 25. The Night of the Living Dead also innovated the drive in movies,
although, these are not as popular nowadays. During this time movies only cost $1.50, but these movies
still brought in millions in revenue and this was the turning point for starting the personal filmmaking
trend. This is a clip from Dawn of the Dead, it was released in 1978 and it is about two SWAT members
who try to stop a zombie apocalypse. The director, George Romero, was instrumental in creating this
zombie horror genre. Romero used suspenseful background music when the zombies were after them to
make it scarier, although, I thought the makeup on the zombies was really fake looking compared to the
makeup on new zombie movies and television shows such as The Walking Dead. It is amazing to see how
makeup and editing can really change the impact movies make on the audience.

The Detrimental Effects of Teenage Drug Abuse in the UK
The use of drugs by teenagers today has caused a concern in the UK. Teenagers are unknown to the effects
that drugs can cause physically and mentally. It is very important that there is awareness on drug abuse
among young people. Since the usage of drugs not only affects the body, it also affects many aspects of a
person s daily life. Firstly, it affects the social life, causing isolation, which is one of the most common
effects that happen due to drug usage. Secondly, it affects family and relationships. Due to the addiction of
drugs, sometimes families abandon their children or lose their trust on them. Lastly, drug use affects
people financially and professionally. Depending on drugs, causes the financial strain to be devastating, as

When taking amphetamine, users start to get anxious, tense and if they take a heavy dose over a long
period of time, they get linked to the mental illness, psychosis. Some drugs, like cannabis, cause the user
to become paranoid. Cocaine can cause extreme alertness, impaired judgment, impulsiveness, and
compulsively repeated acts. Even though, cocaine is used to enhance the sex drive, the effect that it has on
the receptors in the brain reduces the ability to feel pleasure, which eventually causes the dependency on
the drug. Another drug that has a powerful effect on the body is Ritalin. Ritalin causes severe headaches,
anxiety, paranoia and delusions. These are some of the psychological effects that drugs cause to the human
body. Following the usage of drugs, young people s social lives and relationships get affected harshly.
Most teens find refuge from current problems by taking drugs. Once a person starts using drugs, they
gradually start drifting apart from family and friends. For them, drugs are their only life lines, and the
reason to live. The most common effect that drugs have on social lives is isolation. This eventually starts
effecting family, as the family starts getting dysfunctional. The family bond starts dissolving, as the user
gives importance to the drugs only. This causes trust to be shattered, and soon families too. Another factor
that gets affected the most after the use of drugs is

Analysis Of The Philosophical Views Of The Other Presented...
Assignment: Final Paper the Other
Nancy Barahona
National University
Philosophy 337
August 1, 2015
Professor Martin Gomez
In looking at the philosophical views of the Other presented by Emmanuel Levinas we will consider
whether we act strictly for the good of others without investing any self interest in what we do or do we do
what we desire most at the end of the day; however, we will find many of our daily interactions including
working, caring for another and just basic interactions are all done in self interest not in the interest of the
Other. According to Rosenstand (2013) Levinas explains the Other as a term seen in philosophy about a
person who is different from oneself; it is when one is facing something or someone that one is
fundamentally unfamiliar with. (Rosenstand, 2013, p. 82) He goes onto explain that this stranger can be a
person of a different sex or race or even someone who has different experiences than oneself. Levinas sees
the bottom line of all human existence as the encounter with the Other. (Rosenstand, 2013, p. 513) When
people meet people they will more often than not meet someone who is different from them. They will be
a different color. A different sex. A different social class. It will be someone who has grown up in a
different environment than them. And instinct will set in and one will try to change the Other; they will
perceive that they are helping the Other but really they are helping themselves. One person will

Organismal Biology
Organismal biology is the study of structure, function, ecology, and evolution at the level of the organism.
An understanding of the biology of animals and plants allows for a better prediction of impacts on these
organisms from human activity. Having a biological understanding of these organisms also allows for
better conservation practices. Organismal biology will allow me to have in depth knowledge of species
behavior, physiology, and evolutionary history, which is essential information when making management
and conservation plans for specific species. Understanding the genetic structure and background, and
evolutionary history of species and populations allows for a better understanding of patterns of dispersal,

Female Relationships Between Female Leaders And The...
Women have long been known to be more relationship oriented, emotional, and tenderhearted and have
embraced these characteristics to break down the decades of stereotypes that had previously hindered
them from attaining positions of power. Some individuals believe these characteristics are perceived as
flaws in leadership; however, today they can have a positive effect on relationships between female
leaders and the population they serve. This will serve as my hypothesis for this paper. For example, one
female president of a higher education institution believes showing emotion allows students to feel more
connected to her (Vaughan, 1989, p. 24). They have proven that they are equally qualified and in many
cases, are more successful in position of power than men. As we know, the number of female presidents in
higher education is on the rise. What caused this increase? How do these women differ from their male
counterparts? Are women adjusting their personality in the workplace to fit that of a male dominated level
or style of leadership? Is there equality between men and women for the same levels of leadership? What
personality traits exist in women that make them great leaders? This new phenomenon has piqued my
interest because my career is in higher education and it is my intent to work my way to an executive
position within a college or university. At one point in time, women were not considered tough enough to
handle a position of power. Today, women are

Reasons For Jfk Assassination
In 1963, President John F. Kennedy was sadly assassinated supposedly by Lee Harvey Oswald. Although
it is still a mystery exactly how and why he was assassinated, but we do have evidence that could lead to
possible reasoning. There are three main theories on how he was assassinated, Oswald being the lone
assassin, Oswald being part of a larger conspiracy, and that Oswald was completely innocent. Based on
the evidence, the most plausible theory is that Oswald was part of a larger conspiracy. This is because
when Kennedy was shot, the shots came from multiple directions. They think that Oswald shot Kennedy
while he was on the third floor of Texas School Book Depository, plus he was shot with explosive rounds,

maximizers actively competing, with each trying to predict future market values of individual securities,
and where important current information is almost freely available to all participants. In an efficient
market, competition among the many intelligent participants leads to a situation where, at any point in

The Chosen Essay
The Chosen
Inflective and Forward Personalities
In Chaim Potok s The Chosen, two contrasting characters are introduced Reuven Malter and Danny
Saunders. They are opposites. While Reuven is forward speaking his mind, Danny Saunders shows a stark
contrast an inflective soul, listening to silence, and growing from it. These characters set the stage for a
lasting relationship to form, to be strengthened, and to be stressed.
Danny s father s name is Reb Saunders. The tzaddik of a small community within close proximity of
Reuven s home, he was born in Russia and later brought his congregation to America. When Danny is
speaking to Reuven, he tells him the story of this occurrence.

After Reuven initially wakes up, Danny visits him in the hospital to apologize. I am sorry, he said quietly.
I ll just bet you are, I told him. He...turned and walked slowly away. After Reuven tells his father of the
events, his father tells him that he should have listened. This response on David s part initially caused
Reuven to listen to Danny when he returned the second time.
You did a foolish thing, Reuven, he told me sternly. You remember what the Talmud says. If a person
comes to apologize for having hurt you, you must listen and forgive him.
I couldn t help it, abba.
You hate him so much you could say those things to him?
I m sorry, I said, feeling miserable.
As with playing the What If game (asking what if incessantly to explore each aspect of a situation), so did
a chain of events occur that caused this relationship to form.
The first act was not a what if but was the original occurrence. It was Danny s father, Reb, bringing his
parish to New York. If he had not done so, Danny and Reuven would have no chance of meeting. The
second event was the Americanization of the Jewish parochial schools after the Second World War. Again,
if this had not happened, Danny would have had a slimmer chance of meeting Reuven, but since they
lived in the same neighborhood and since Reuven s father knew Danny they may have met. The third
occurrence was Danny s practicing. If

Airport Security
In this essay, I will attempt to argue that TSA serves as a mechanism for the government to frame the
nature of the debate on privacy, in a way that is beneficial to them. To do this I will first argue that airport
security and the TSA are objectively ineffective and merely creates the illusion of privacy. Despite not
actually protecting us, the system of airplane security, conditions individuals in the general public to be
willing to make sacrifices in privacy for a perceived greater good in community safety. This viewpoint of
individuals sacrificing a little privacy for the well being of society is the essentially the same nothing to

This is problematic because it is frighteningly easy to make mistakes, and nearly impossible to catch a
suspect. In fact, some security experts suspect that the TSA has never once caught a terrorist at a
checkpoint. A natural byproduct of a one checkpoint system is massive lines. It is widely accepted both in
the intelligence community and popular culture that terrorists seek out crowds because they can inflict the
most damage. This is disturbingly ironic; as in an attempt to prevent us against terrorism, the TSA
conveniently packs hundreds of travels together in cramped security lines, creating a clear terrorist target.
Therefore, technically terrorists don t even need to get through security in order to make an attack. All of
these structural flaws in the American airplane security system or TSA, point to the conclusion, that the
massive TSA system merely creates the appearance of protection. In the last paragraph, I have attempted
to show how the TSA creates a guise of protection while doing very little to prevent terrorism. However,
despite doing very little to protect us, the TSA profoundly impacts the parameters for how the debate
around how privacy is defined. In fact, the government uses systems like the TSA to control the narrative
around privacy. In the current system of airport security, innocent citizens, are

Vietnam War Archetype
Imagine being suddenly drafted to war, not prepared for the death and horror. Young, confused, scared,
naïve. During the Vietnam War, many young men were forced to face a war that changed them, and not
necessarily for the better. Many of the men who went to war experienced terrors that changed them in a
way that affected their lives after, as shown by countless war stories and poems. Norman Bowker, from
Tim O Brien s The Things They Carried (1990), is a perfect example of the hard bitten war veteran
archetype. Fighting in the Vietnam War and feeling as if he had a part in his friend s death (Kiowa) caused
him so much guilt and pain that he ended up hanging himself after endlessly driving around a lake when
returning home. Similarly, Yusef Komunyakaa s poem, The Dead at Quang Tri , emphasizes the ghosts
that haunt soldiers during and after war. Overall, the haunting memories that characters deal with in war
stories, like O Brien and Komunyakaa s, display the long lasting effects of death and war on the minds of
soldiers. To begin, Norman Bowker perfectly exemplifies the hard bitten war veteran archetype. He lived
in pain, constantly ruminating on time at war and making himself an outsider to society. He felt hopeless,
always reliving the nightmares of war, like when he lost his friend Kiowa to a field of waste. At the end of
the chapter Speaking of Courage , O Brien wrote, After at time he got out, walked down to the beach, and

Catiline is dutiful as well but as Sallust tells us these duties is tainted with its intent and motives. Catiline s
sense of duty is focusing on serving himself instead of the valued Roman sense of duty where the good of
the state, city or empire is meant to benefit instead of an individual. Sallust provides an example of this
selfishness that Catiline displays a covetous of others possessions, he was prodigal of his own; he was
violent in his passions. He possessed a certain amount of eloquence, but little discretion. His disordered
mind ever craved the monstrous, incredible, gigantic (5.4 5). Instead of acting for the best of the whole
state, Catiline is greedy for what others have as well as spending his own wealth in a reckless and
extravagant manner. Sallust goes on to hint that it would be somewhat more acceptable if Catiline were
trying to hide his unacceptable behavior and actions but instead his conspicuous manner makes his actions
that much worse and unacceptable. In short this quote shows how Catiline is dutiful to his desires and self
gain at the expense of others. This idea of duty is seen and labeled throughout Virgil s works with Aeneas

Howard Zinn s The United States
Howard Zinn s A People s History of the United States has been highly influential since its initial
publication in 1980. It spawned adaptations for young readers (a two volume adaptation by Rebecca
Stefoff: A Young People s History of the United States) and The People Speak, a History Channel
documentary based on Zinn s work. Zinn himself was until his death in 2010 a heroic figure to many,
especially for this book and for his ongoing teaching and social activism, which were directly related.
A People s History of the United States was praised from the moment it appeared on shelves. A 1980
Library Journal review called it brilliant and moving and said it was well designed to appeal to both
historians and general readers. However, the volume was not without its criticisms. Some of these
critiques align with party lines. Roger Kimball s review in the conservative National Review labeled Zinn
a Professor of contempt and dismissed the work as the ultimate in anti American history, a patchwork of
leftist clichés. Oscar Handlin s review for The American Scholar dismissed both Zinn s approach to
history and the actual content of the work, citing a number of Zinn s claims as fallacious.
Some criticisms of the work carried more intellectual weight and addressed the quality of Zinn s reasoning
directly. Bruce Kuklick s review of the book for The Nation suggested that A People s History of the

Comparing The Road Not Taken And The Roads Within
In the poem I crafted, The Roads Within , it extend the ideas of the original poem, The Road Not Taken .
One of the major ideas of the original poems is that we all have a choice in the decisions and paths we

one decides to live a certain way they must consider if they would not have regrets on the life they chose
to live. The idea of not being able to go back to the point where the decision is made is represented in both
poems. In line 15, Robert Frost wrote, I doubted if I should ever come back and in line 10 of my poem it

Most people will have negative views and associates them as a criminal. They will assume that you live in
poverty, you are on government assistance, and that you obtain a low level education. These views are
forced on us because of the way society has delineate them. For example when we see a news report about

society has told us that if one black man has stolen, then all black men are thieves. On television they

Underage Drinking And Teenage Drinking
Alex Wilmore Joshua James, Instructor ENG 111 07 July 2015 Underage Drinking With such compelling
information, the question is why haven t we been able to do more to prevent the crisis of underage
drinking? The answer is: rising the age to 25 is what Lucille Roybal Allard once said, a U.S.
Representative for serving in Congress since 1993. This statement has brought many to speculate of issues
and debates. This expression opened the eyes of American people that often struggled to make this truth
into a reality. It might be easy to believe that age laws lowered the deaths of the underage but there are
still signs of its dreadful company in many pieces of American life. Families who choose to educate their
children about underage drinking and driving, seem to have a higher chance of getting through with the
child. These underage teens can face jail or death when they give drinking a chance and even attempt to
drive, having a sexual intercourse or just plain out doing something out of the teen s element. There are
few different methods of controlling the underage drinking and most of which the teachers, the parents
and everyone who is willing to be involved. The underage drinking can be narrowed to two different
opinions of effective methods of eliminating underage drinking: the first opinion being to have parental
and teacher prevention methods and the second opinion being that regulating the alcohol assumption age

the environment and execute specific, often difficult maneuvers behind the wheel (CADD Campaign
Against Drinking Driving). When drinking alcohol, using drugs, or being distracted for any reason,
driving becomes dangerous. Some drunk drivers might say they are good at drinking and driving, but
nobody is good at drunk driving and the driver is also harmful to themselves, as there brain is slowed
down from the use of alcohol in the form of a depressant. In closing, while drunk driving seems to be
something that happens frequently, that does not mean it is a good idea. Before you get behind the wheel
after tossing back a few drinks, think about the life changing events that you could be putting forward
with your decisions. No one ever thinks that anything bad can happen to them, especially teens. But it

Introduction to International Business
Ms. Wilhelm
1. What are the four dimensions of distance in Starbuck s international expansion?
The four dimensions are culture, administrative, geographic and economic distance.
2. How did Starbucks reduce the distance vis à vis host countries?
Starbucks used many tactics to reduce its distance from foreign markets. Firstly, Starbucks conducted
extensive research in each country. They used focus groups, and quantitative analysis, to evaluate local
cultural sensitivities and preferences. But it also used specific local adaptations. For ... Show more content

Essay On Defense-In-Depth Strategy
To ensure that the Western Interconnection power grid computer network is properly secured, there needs
to be strong defense in depth strategies in place. Although they may be strong defense in depth strategies,
vulnerabilities may be present and used as an advantage point for hackers to gain access to the network.
Defense in depth strategies will help create risk management to assess certain risks that may be proven as
detrimental to a network.
The idea behind defense in depth is to manage risk with diverse defensive strategies, so that if one layer of
defense turns out to be inadequate, another layer of defense will hopefully prevent a full breach. This
principle is well known, even beyond the security community; for example, it is a ... Show more content

Barnum et al, 2005). A firewall alone will not be enough to stop an intruder. You will have to do more to
stop if vulnerability is discovered. If we throw up another firewall, just around the application this time,
then we can protect ourselves from people who can get inside the corporate firewall. Now they d have to
find a flaw in some service that our application s sub network explicitly exposes, something we re in a
good position to control (S. Barnum et al, 2005). A firewall alone is not enough protection against a
cybercriminal. There will be a vulnerability or flaw of some kind within the server that can be exposed
and cause a great deal of destruction. Defense in depth is a practical strategy for achieving information
assurance in today s highly networked environments, as defined by the NSA, which first applied the long
standing military strategy to network security. The basic premise of defense in depth is that layering
security controls within a computing environment helps slow down an attacker s progress should she/he
gain access (K. Teitler, 2016). The defense in depth strategy that was created by the NSA is very practical
in finding information. The steps and processes that are taken into consideration are for each system to
draw out any vulnerability that may be present. Each step has a different job that delivers different results
than the rest. What the NSA Information Assurance based defense in depth strategy is they

How does Seneca’s Characterisation of Thyestes add to the...
Characterisation is hugely important to a plot just for it to make some sort of sense. The characterisation
of key figures in the plot, however, has huge significance as it helps you to understand why the characters
perform certain, (often unthinkable,) actions. If we only have one dimensional characters described to us
then we are unable to immerse ourselves into a highly complex plot. Intense characterisation makes us
form connections with key figures and actually empathise with some of them, especially in the case of the
Thyestes. As a rule, characterisation is vital to make any plot evoke any sort of feelings except the
enjoyment of reading a pleasurable story. Methods of characterisation include appearance, personality and

He should also be learned and philosophical. All these traits apply to Thyestes, a stereotypical wise man.
This adds to the impact of the plot as we see Thyestes as a good man and one who certainly doesn t
deserve to suffer through the tragic demise of his sons. Seeing Thyestes as a wise and philosophical man
who has suffered through life makes us empathise with him hugely as any death is made multiple times
worse if the victims are innocent. Thyestes, however, seems slightly too trusting of Atreus and does not
think through his invitation and almost subconsciously hopes that Atreus means well.
We also hear Thyestes exclaim: is it from grief or fear? Or doth great joy hold tears? Thyestes cunning
mind knows that it is wrong to trust Atreus and causes him to cry but Thyestes decides to think of the tears
in joy rather than fear, ignoring his own subconscious warning. My cause of fear, which I myself know
not, thou demandest of me. Naught to be feared I see, but still I fear. Fain would I go, but my limbs totter
with faltering knees, and other whither than I strive to go am I borne away in thrall. Just so a ship, urged
on by oar and sail, the tide, resisting both oar and sail, bears back...invites? Then must I fear. Some trick
strays hereabouts. Thyestes uses negative phrases to highlight the fear he feels about going back to Atreus.
He also uses the nature simile of the tide to show the strong

Living From Home Vs. Living From Home And The Workplace
Working from home versus working in the workplace has its advantages. Saving time and money on the
commute alone may be a no brainer for some. However, others may enjoy going into the workplace and
being around other people. The work at home employee can choose to wear whatever they want from
pajamas to shorts and a t shirt. Depending upon the position the employee that chose to work in the office
may have to conform to a set dress code. The employee that choose to work from home would have more
choices over what they want to eat. Most workplaces have vending machines and cafes with limited
choices. Each employee that is offered the chance to work from home and makes the choice either to or
not to work from home has their reasons. Commuting into the workplace is time consuming, costly and
stressful. The estimated travel time in the United States is 25.4 minutes according to the U.S. Census
Bureau. The 25.4 minutes is based on the one way commute leaving it at 50.8 minutes round trip. Another
fun fact is that the annual cost of commuting to and from the workplace is $1512.00 per calculator
provided by University of California. Commuting can be very stressful and cause road rage and
aggressive driving. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that over a seven year
period, 218 murders and 12,610 injuries were attributed to road rage. These fun facts do not seem to be
fun at all the loss of time, money and the stress of it all. How nice would be to enjoy your coffee at your
kitchen table with a little breakfast? Speaking of food who has time with all the commute for breakfast,
lunch or to eat healthily. It is said that the most important meal of the day is breakfast. Per Web MD
breakfast is important it ignites your metabolism, helping you burn calories throughout the day. It also
gives you the energy you need to get things done and helps with focus. Most individuals run out the door
in the morning with just a coffee in hand. Most employees are given 30 minutes for lunch. Not allot of
time to eat let alone stand in line or head out of the workplace to grab a quick lunch. Some employees
bypass this all together and grab what they can from

Crime Is A Serious Problem
Policing and fighting crime are two terms often associated together. Crime is a serious problem in cities
and a lot of people are affected by it. Victims, criminals and their families are touched by the outcomes of
crime. Crime has increased over the years and is continuing to do so. The city of Memphis has
experienced a great increase of crime. Memphis Police have developed initiatives to reduce crime, using
federally funded programs. Unfortunately, crime problems such as theft, assaults and homicide have
become irrepressible over the last three years. The rate of homicide in Memphis is more typical of cities of
its size. Assaults were accounted for 65 percent of deaths in the area. (Kellermann, Rivara
Lee,1996,p.1438 1440). The Uniformed Crime Report (UCR) is very successful for keeping track with the
rates of these crimes.
The environment, the personality of the perpetrator and genetics has all been factors to blame for criminal
behavior. Although, these factors have potential to play a role in the reasoning behind criminal acts, they
will have to be supported. Criminological theories can hold the context to support the evidence of these
factors. Understanding crime and developing strategies are the keys in taking the step to initiate a strategic
plan. When addressing theft, assaults and homicide, the initiatives will have to be considered and
provisions will be made for a successful reduction in crime. Addressing the problems of theft, assaults and
homicide a

Indian Ocean Region Research Paper
The Indian Ocean Region s commerce and countries were vastly connected with the Indian Ocean Trade
Network. During the time period of 650 C.E. to 1750 C.E., the Indian Ocean Region s commerce
experienced continuities in the people and regions involved in the Indian Ocean Trade Network, the use of
monsoon winds to facilitate commerce, and the intermarrying of people. The Indian Ocean region, during
this same time period, experienced changes in commerce, such as new and improved technologies, the
trading of new goods, and the involvement of new people. Commerce in the Indian Ocean Region s

such as exotic animals, wood, and ivory were traded from Africa, Arabia traded scrubby trees whose

finally, South East Asia traded more spices, manufactured goods, and pottery from China. But, by the
latter part of the 650 C.E. to 1750 C.E. time period, a slow transition occurred. From 1200 C.E. 1750 C.E.,
Africans mainly provided gold, Arabians provided horses and European goods, the Indians provided
Indian goods supplied by local merchants and trade like spices, and finally, the South East Asians
provided rubies, musk, tin, gold and cloves and nutmeg from various countries in the region like Burma,
Malay, Sumatra, and Moluccas. Although some major items like spices and manufactured goods were still
traded from the start of 650 C.E. to 1750 C.E., there were multiple changes in the items traded from 1200
C.E. to 1750 C.E., mainly due to the changing needs of society and rise of interest in new products. Thus,

Blue mountain resorts case study Essay
Blue Mountain resorts (Data collection)
1. Problem definition
Blue Mountain Resorts were first built in 1941, and it is the largest family operated ski resort in Canada.
The major problem in this case is that the CEO of the Blue Mountain Resorts has to decide whether to
install facilitates or not for the night skiing in 1979 1980 winter skiing season. Maintaining comfortable
capacity at ski resort is very important in this field of market. The capacity depends on the hill size, hill
development, and lift facilities. Therefore, to provide the night skiing service, investing in hills and lifts
are important factors. So, if the CEO decides to install the night skiing facilities, he needs to decide the
price of the single night lift ticket ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Among 2 intermediate levels, one advanced, and one beginner and intermediate level, one should be
chosen. I suggest the intermediate level to be opened since the night ski uses would mostly intermediate
high level users rather than beginners, and advanced level at night would be somehow dangerous. The
operating cost would be $1000 per night, adding seasonal allocation of $20,000 fixed cost, $7.75 liability
insurance per 1000 skiers, and $5000 for promotional cost. Therefore, the cost of operating night skiing is,
$1000*120days+$20,000+$5000+$7.75*30= $145,232.50 per year. $135,000+$145,232.50=$280,232.50.
The frequency of night skiing in cross tabulation of pass holder status was mostly 1 10 times per year.
They will come for two or more days. The profit calculation will be approximately 2days* 5 times*
$5.50=$55.0 per people for a year. 30,000 people*30%*$55= $495,000 per year. This profit exceeds the
cost, so the company should invest in facilitating the night skiing.
The next step is to decide the type of the season pass and the ticket price. It could offer the special night
skiing season pass or combine it with the original day time season pass. For example, three types of the
passes which are; day pass, night pass, or combined pass. On the night skiing survey, fair price showed to
be $5 for midweek nights and $6 for weekend nights. Most people anticipated their skiing days a year to 1
5 or more than 20. Also, the

Investigating The Rate Of The Red Water
The aim of this experiment is to observe and record the rate of the blue water in the dialysis tube diffusing
into the beaker containing different concentrations of salt over 20 minutes to see what effect the
concentrations of salt has on the rate of diffusion. The hypothesized of this experiment is that the blue
water in dialysis tube 3 will have a faster rate of blue dye diffusing into the salt water in beaker 3. Beaker
1 will have the slowest rate of blue dye diffusing from the dialysis tube into the salt water and beaker 2
will result in a colour in between beaker 1 and 3. This is because the concentration of salt in the beaker is
higher than the water in the dialysis tubes so the salt water will go into the dialysis tube while the blue
water in the dialysis tube will diffusion into the beaker. This experiment was performed by measuring out
the same amount of water into each of the 3 beakers and adding different amounts of salt to each one to
change the concentration. 3 dialysis tubes containing water and 3 drops of blue dye were tied at one end,
then tied at the other using cotton thread before placing them one each into the different concentrated
beaker cotton tied end facing down. After 20 minutes the results were observed and recorded into the
results table. The finishing results were unexpected and not accurate due to the systematic and random
errors, rejecting the hypothesis. One of the most important Functions in biology (providing structure,

Football In Friday Night Lights By Buzz Bissinger

pastime it kills kids lives in Odessa Texas leaving them confused and unprepared by too much community
involvement, unrealistic expectations, and excessive dreams.

Constantly the boys are instilled with the dreams that they are gonna be big in college and then possibly
the NFL. Realistically this is very untrue as in Permian s fifty five year football history, only six players
have tried for or made the pro leagues telling us that football is not a good career. The boys envision
themselves playing for some of the biggest colleges in the nation, however for many they want even have
the grades to stay in college academically. Charlie Billingsley found out that life in college was a whole
lot different ...you were a whole lot more expendable in college...there was always a bunch of guys ready
to replace you in a second (Bissinger 63).Furthermore the boys once in college will finally realize that
they are disposable. No more are they the once stars that they were in Odessa but players needed to get

Gallipoli Film Analysis
This film analysis will define the importance of mateship and sportsmanship in the ANZAC culture of
Gallipoli (1981). Peter Weir film of the Gallipoli Campaign from 1915 196 revolves around the mateship
of Frank Dunne (Mel Gibson) and Archy Hamilton (Mark Lee) that binds them through sportsmanship
and military nationalism. The Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) culture is typically
based on the athleticism of soldiering culture, which allows Frank to become a runner of information
dispatches during the campaign. More so, Archy s speed is deferred because of his patriotic desire to be on
the front lines of the war. However, Frank and Archy are bound by the mateship that they experience as
alienated short distance runners, which ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The mateship of Archy and Frank is based on the sportsmanship culture of Western Australia, which was a
popular recruitment method for young men that joined ANZAC and, eventually, fought in the Gallipoli
Campaign. Archy is a the blindly loyal nationalist that relies on his running skills to put peer pressure on
Frank to join ANZAC. Frank initially declines, but the sportsmanship culture encourages a deep bond with
a fellow short distance runner in the effort to maintain mateship. However, there were many different
soldiers from a wide variety of backgrounds, such as lower class backgrounds, which define a different
and less romantic view of sportsmanship that Weir presents in this film. In reality, man men from the
lower working classes joined ANZAC as a way to avoid poverty and low wage work. Archy and Frank s
relationship is a heroic and romantic view of the Gallipoli Campaign, yet it does show the horror and
carnage of bloody murder of young men, such as Archy, that died in this failed attack against the Turkish
Army. In this manner, the film Gallipoli provides insight into some aspects of mateship and sportsmanship
between Archy and frank that was certainly valid, but it does not provide a comprehensive and realistic
understanding of the multiple perspectives of class status and identity that defined enlistment in ANZAC
in WWI.

  • 2. Calfee And CAFE Standards CAFE is an acronym for Corporate Average Fuel Economy. As stated in, Will Corporate Average Fuel Economy Help, CAFÉ standards became prevalent by Congress in 1975 after the oil crisis of the 1970 s. These standards were proposed in order to help the United States depend less on foreign oil (Sen et al. 2017, p. 279). The idea of CAFÉ standards does not only help us rely less on foreign oil, but it also reduces greenhouse gas emissions. Below general information about CAFÉ and the CAFÉ standards that are current today will be described. As described above, CAFÉ was first introduced after the 1973 oil crisis. Congress needed to find solutions to reduce our reliance on oil imported from other countries. CAFÉ requires car and light truck ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Today, lightweight cars are not seen as an issue because of the advancements we have made in technology. However, during the mid 1970 s to 1980 s, consumers were correlating that the rise in automobile fatalities was correlated to CAFÉ s standards with fuel efficiency. During this time of concern, it was concluded that better fuel efficiency could be accomplished by technologies that were available at the time and these technologies would not change the weight of the automobile (Schmidt 2002, pg.468). Technology is always advancing. During the time of safety concerns, people did not necessarily realize that improved technology would be launched in the years to come (Bezdek and Wendling 2003, p. 409). How have CAFÉ standards progressed and what are the requirements for new car models? Starting in May of 2010, former President Barack Obama, the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA), and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), all administered Final Rules for automobiles built in 2017 through 2021 (United States Department of Transportation 2014). The regulations were aimed towards CAFÉ and Greenhouse Gas emissions for cars and light trucks. Along with cars and light trucks, there were also regulations set in place for medium and heavy duty trucks. The only difference is that the heavier trucks are years 2014 to 2018. Cars and light trucks will have to have an average, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Lyndon B. Johnson Martin Luther King, Jr. and Lyndon B. Johnson demonstrated unimaginable leadership skills in an effort to accomplish their respective agendas. Through the use of moral leadership, King would rise to become the head of the Civil Rights Movement by means of civil disobedience and nonviolent resistance. MLK began as a Baptist Minister, but after seeing the difference he could make in the world, decided to stand up for what he felt was right. Johnson, on the other hand, used political leadership in order to make a name for himself as President of the United States. LBJ was willing to do whatever it took to accomplish his goals, even if it meant going against the Southern Democrats who had elected him to political office. One of these risks ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Niebuhr believed that the world was full of evils and oppressions that individuals needed to fight against. People should not stand back and allow the horrors around them to continue, but instead fight back in whatever way they can. MLK would take these teachings and apply them to his ideas of Gandhi s nonviolent protests. Individuals who are in the minority, and thus unable to take drastic action, would benefit from the use of nonviolence. This strategy would allow Black Americans to seek justice and equality without truly disturbing the current relationship with White Americans. King s plan was to allow his religious and political ideals to run on the same moral edge, something that Reinhold Niebuhr had surely allowed for in his ideology (Branch, 81 7). Martin Luther King, Jr. was able to use this religious and moral idea of nonviolence to unite Black Americans who were tired of their oppression. Violence and drastic action had proven to arguably make their situation worse, meaning that something as different as peaceful civil disobedience could prove to work. By the time of the 1963 I Have a Dream speech at the March on Washington, King had become the voice of the various perspectives of life as a Black American. He now expressed the universal voice of all his people, and he was not afraid to use it in the pursuit of equality for Blacks (Branch, 881 3). Martin Luther King s Birmingham campaign would prove to be the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Smoking and The Human Body Essay examples Smoking is a bad habit which plagues the young, as well as the old. It is the largest source of preventable mortality in North America1. Not only does smoking lead to an early grave, but it can also influence one s daily life. Many studies have revealed links between smoking and reduced endurance capacity2. Nicotine, the addictive agent found in cigarettes, can also be used to control weight gain. Both of these factors can have considerable effect on the sporting world. There have been many studies done, indicating that if you smoked, you did less physical activity. It has also been shown that the more you smoke, the less activity you do. Many sports and activities require the athlete to do notable amounts of work and expend a fair amount of energy. When an athlete smokes, they will not be able to get the required oxygen to the necessary parts of the body, and therefore will not perform as well. It has been proven that even if you have smoked, when you quit smoking your levels of physical activity will increase8. When taking a glimpse of all the top athletes in the world, it can be noted that none of them are frequent tobacco product users. Another aspect of smoking and the human body is the effect of nicotine on body weight. Nicotine, the drug found in cigarettes, is usually what tends to get smokers addicted to tobacco products. Through many different experiments, it has been shown that smokers tend to weigh less than non smokers9. These tests were done not only by measurement of weight, but by multiple skinfold thickness assessments. In a study done on rats, it was determined that nicotine exposed rats had significantly less carcass fat, suggesting that nicotine effects fat stores. The more nicotine which was given, the less fat the rats had. It was hypothesized that nicotine effected these fat stores was by altering key enzymes in the regulation and uptake of triglycerides such as adipose tissue lipoprotein lipase10. When dealing with humans, one study found that smokers had 2.8% lower total body fat than non smokers11. During the process of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Aaron Hernandez Why Did Aaron Hernandez Kill Odin Lloyd? Aaron Hernandez a very youthful accomplished NFL player with a 40 million dollar contract will now be serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole. This is all due to him being convicted of murdering long term companion Odin Lloyd. In June of 2013 Lloyd was shot seven times and found dead near the player s home. The prosecution had prodigious and significant amounts of evidence against Hernandez. Surveillance video ten minutes after the murder shows surveillance of Aaron in his own home walking with what resembles a gun. Text messages from Lloyd and Hernandez shows intent from them meeting up with each other that same momentous night. The only part missing out of this case in the motive. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One example is the image on Hernandez holding a black object that appeared to be a gun. Although no one could tell for sure what this object was, more than likely it was a gun. The prosecution had government experts and lay witnesses to present to the jurors that this was more than likely a gun. Other evidence introduced was a pair of red sneakers earlier on in the trial. Jurors didn t know what was so important about this evidence but once the prosecution explained about the foot tracks later on this made sense. So the jury had to go back to the evidence that they were presented earlier and put the clues together to perceive the evidence. Now the million dollar question is why this talented NFL player committed such crimes with a 40 million dollar contract at risk. What happened that made him so angry? Odin Lloyd knew a lot about Hernandez it seems that the more people know about him the more suspicious he gets. Aaron seems to have a paranoid type of personality partly from his drug usage with angle dust and marijuana. His brain doesn t function properly while he is on these drug making him quickly flustered and always thinking someone is out to get him or disrespect him. This successful NFL player is convicted of murdering his close friend also he is fighting two more first degree murder charges. Also a lawsuit for shooting on of his friends ... The case of death can be positive action such as jumping from an upper window or negative action such as hunger strike. Durkheim eliminates psychotic paranoid suicide because it is non sociological explanation of suicide and it is not the result of self concise aim. The factor correlation between mental disorder and self destruction varies considerably. Scotland had comparatively high level of lunacy but there is low level self destruction. While Saxony showed a low level of lunacy but a high rate of self destruction. Alcohol addiction and substance abuse are eliminated by Durkheim (Law, 2011, p.200). Undoubtedly, race itself is abolished as an irrational concept. In the month of summer and at temperature degrees of latitude (50 55 degrees), there are more suicide cases because when communion is most competency public, especially in urban areas. One of the causes of non social associated to suicide that Durkheim examines is imitation. Durkheim differing the suicide rates among protestant and catholic, he argues that stronger social control among catholic result in lower suicide rates. According to Durkheim, catholic society has normal levels of integration while protestant society has low levels. He says that suicide rates are higher in men than in women. • 9. The Chemistry And Physic Of Either River Or Lake I would like to phrase the question in another way, which is how would I determine the representative sample and then accordingly what the constituents to be sampled?. As representative sample would be the least number of data points required to give way a statistically precise picture of the water body being analyzed. The chemistry and physic of either river or lake is a function of the substances that contact with either in flowing or still water and how long been there with their exposure to the sunlight or wind. The constituents from varied sources that are entering or leaving (river/lake) can be a function of the hydrology and topography system. Water from sources such as direct/indirect precipitation, surface runoff from snowmelt, or storm water from exposed rock or packed soil, or groundwater inflow from the aquifer will react with the soil or bed/sedimentary rock and dissolved them (as the phenomena knowns weathering condition). Therefore these variable sources can add a critical deposit into the river or lake (surface water) constituents. For instance, many lakes and rivers sensitive to acidification due to the acid precipitation/ mine drainage, or to the atmospheric inputs such as (dust, SO4, NO3, Cl) leaving no time for neutralization before reaching lakes and rivers. Further, seasonally variation for the snowmelt, dry period, runoff, discharge can be explained by a plot of chemistry versus time or discharge depending upon the site. • 10. The Scottish Referendum For Independence Abstract The question I seek to answer in this essay is whether the Scottish Referendum for Independence from 18th September 2014 (hereafter referred as the 2014 Referendum ) was indeed a process that can give account to legitimacy. This essay will look at legitimacy as being a moral claim set by our own culture. It will also explore the meaning of overall legitimacy of the 2014 Referendum and if individual claims of citizens are in conflict with it. Furthermore, it will argued that the political discourse of Alex Salmond and of the Scottish National Party as a whole, was detrimental to the Scottish civil society as it facilitated its division. Scope of the question and its delimitation This essay will solely give an account of the relatively of the 2014 Referendum s legitimacy and will show that through non relative arguments coming from the SNP political discourse, the overall legitimacy of the 2014 Referendum provides a prescriptive account on the devolution in so far. A notion that will not be addressed by this essay is represented by the impact of the Scottish referendum for independence on countries such as Spain and the states from the former Republic of Yugoslavia. Disposition of the essay In what follows a background of the referendum will be presented. Afterwards, it shall be argued that the entire process for establishing the 2014 Referendum cannot be seen as a democratic one, as it is was induced by the Yes Campaign consequently is logically flawed. ... Right off the back the restaurant s ambiance had a positive vibe. Mindful, it was a Saturday late afternoon. Mary Jane Burger and Brew is a local restaurant trying to stay true to its past. The granddaughter of the original owner now runs the place with the intention of serving good quality food where the ingredients are fresh, mouth watering, and surely not filled with antibiotics and all that other genetically modified elements found in processed foods. The vintage, rustic looking place, holds a small town atmosphere with a big taste. The host sat my sister and I at a table in the middle of the dining area. A giant window let sunlight flood into the room and the speakers provided a good backdrop of music to help engage conversation. The restaurant itself seems fairly modern: leather seating, dark wood tables, and mason jar for glasses. It is the epitome of a hang out spot for any teen, millennial, or elder meetup. The staff caters to the needs of the customers and are always ready to help out in any way possible. I started the meal off with a glass of sweet tea that never made it lower then the halfway point. Assignment: Final Paper the Other Nancy Barahona National University Philosophy 337 August 1, 2015 Professor Martin Gomez In looking at the philosophical views of the Other presented by Emmanuel Levinas we will consider whether we act strictly for the good of others without investing any self interest in what we do or do we do what we desire most at the end of the day; however, we will find many of our daily interactions including working, caring for another and just basic interactions are all done in self interest not in the interest of the Other. According to Rosenstand (2013) Levinas explains the Other as a term seen in philosophy about a person who is different from oneself; it is when one is facing something or someone that one is fundamentally unfamiliar with. (Rosenstand, 2013, p. 82) He goes onto explain that this stranger can be a person of a different sex or race or even someone who has different experiences than oneself. Levinas sees the bottom line of all human existence as the encounter with the Other. (Rosenstand, 2013, p. 513) When people meet people they will more often than not meet someone who is different from them. They will be a different color. A different sex. A different social class. It will be someone who has grown up in a different environment than them. Women have long been known to be more relationship oriented, emotional, and tenderhearted and have embraced these characteristics to break down the decades of stereotypes that had previously hindered them from attaining positions of power. This will serve as my hypothesis for this paper. For example, one female president of a higher education institution believes showing emotion allows students to feel more connected to her (Vaughan, 1989, p. 24). They have proven that they are equally qualified and in many cases, are more successful in position of power than men. As we know, the number of female presidents in higher education is on the rise. • 33. Airport Security In this essay, I will attempt to argue that TSA serves as a mechanism for the government to frame the nature of the debate on privacy, in a way that is beneficial to them. To do this I will first argue that airport security and the TSA are objectively ineffective and merely creates the illusion of privacy. Despite not actually protecting us, the system of airplane security, conditions individuals in the general public to be willing to make sacrifices in privacy for a perceived greater good in community safety. This viewpoint of individuals sacrificing a little privacy for the well being of society is the essentially the same nothing to hide argument that the government uses to justify mass surveillance and the violation of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is problematic because it is frighteningly easy to make mistakes, and nearly impossible to catch a suspect. In fact, some security experts suspect that the TSA has never once caught a terrorist at a checkpoint. A natural byproduct of a one checkpoint system is massive lines. It is widely accepted both in the intelligence community and popular culture that terrorists seek out crowds because they can inflict the most damage. This is disturbingly ironic; as in an attempt to prevent us against terrorism, the TSA conveniently packs hundreds of travels together in cramped security lines, creating a clear terrorist target. Therefore, technically terrorists don t even need to get through security in order to make an attack. All of these structural flaws in the American airplane security system or TSA, point to the conclusion, that the massive TSA system merely creates the appearance of protection. In the last paragraph, I have attempted to show how the TSA creates a guise of protection while doing very little to prevent terrorism. However, despite doing very little to protect us, the TSA profoundly impacts the parameters for how the debate around how privacy is defined. In fact, the government uses systems like the TSA to control the narrative around privacy. In the current system of airport security, innocent citizens, are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 34. Vietnam War Archetype Imagine being suddenly drafted to war, not prepared for the death and horror. Young, confused, scared, naïve. During the Vietnam War, many young men were forced to face a war that changed them, and not necessarily for the better. Many of the men who went to war experienced terrors that changed them in a way that affected their lives after, as shown by countless war stories and poems. Norman Bowker, from Tim O Brien s The Things They Carried (1990), is a perfect example of the hard bitten war veteran archetype. Fighting in the Vietnam War and feeling as if he had a part in his friend s death (Kiowa) caused him so much guilt and pain that he ended up hanging himself after endlessly driving around a lake when returning home. Similarly, Yusef Komunyakaa s poem, The Dead at Quang Tri , emphasizes the ghosts that haunt soldiers during and after war. Overall, the haunting memories that characters deal with in war stories, like O Brien and Komunyakaa s, display the long lasting effects of death and war on the minds of soldiers. To begin, Norman Bowker perfectly exemplifies the hard bitten war veteran archetype. He lived in pain, constantly ruminating on time at war and making himself an outsider to society. He felt hopeless, always reliving the nightmares of war, like when he lost his friend Kiowa to a field of waste. While pointing out the future sons to come, including Procas, Romulus, and Augustus, Anchises tells his son that all of these descendants will achieve and conquer by saying: famous names someday, now places without names and beyond our familiar stars, beyond the yearly path of the sun, to the land where Atlas turns the star studded sphere on his shoulders (6.945 947). Catiline is dutiful as well but as Sallust tells us these duties is tainted with its intent and motives. Catiline s sense of duty is focusing on serving himself instead of the valued Roman sense of duty where the good of the state, city or empire is meant to benefit instead of an individual. Sallust provides an example of this selfishness that Catiline displays a covetous of others possessions, he was prodigal of his own; he was violent in his passions. He possessed a certain amount of eloquence, but little discretion. His disordered mind ever craved the monstrous, incredible, gigantic (5.4 5). Instead of acting for the best of the whole state, Catiline is greedy for what others have as well as spending his own wealth in a reckless and extravagant manner. Sallust goes on to hint that it would be somewhat more acceptable if Catiline were trying to hide his unacceptable behavior and actions but instead his conspicuous manner makes his actions that much worse and unacceptable. In short this quote shows how Catiline is dutiful to his desires and self gain at the expense of others. • 36. Howard Zinn s The United States Howard Zinn s A People s History of the United States has been highly influential since its initial publication in 1980. It spawned adaptations for young readers (a two volume adaptation by Rebecca Stefoff: A Young People s History of the United States) and The People Speak, a History Channel documentary based on Zinn s work. Zinn himself was until his death in 2010 a heroic figure to many, especially for this book and for his ongoing teaching and social activism, which were directly related. A People s History of the United States was praised from the moment it appeared on shelves. A 1980 Library Journal review called it brilliant and moving and said it was well designed to appeal to both historians and general readers. However, the volume was not without its criticisms. Some of these critiques align with party lines. Roger Kimball s review in the conservative National Review labeled Zinn a Professor of contempt and dismissed the work as the ultimate in anti American history, a patchwork of leftist clichés. Oscar Handlin s review for The American Scholar dismissed both Zinn s approach to history and the actual content of the work, citing a number of Zinn s claims as fallacious. Some criticisms of the work carried more intellectual weight and addressed the quality of Zinn s reasoning directly. One of the major ideas of the original poems is that we all have a choice in the decisions and paths we take in life. In my poem I enforce that idea in line 4, Long I waited, considering each choice . Before any one decides to live a certain way they must consider if they would not have regrets on the life they chose to live. The idea of not being able to go back to the point where the decision is made is represented in both poems. This statement has brought many to speculate of issues and debates. This expression opened the eyes of American people that often struggled to make this truth into a reality. These underage teens can face jail or death when they give drinking a chance and even attempt to drive, having a sexual intercourse or just plain out doing something out of the teen s element. There are few different methods of controlling the underage drinking and most of which the teachers, the parents and everyone who is willing to be involved. Investigating The Rate Of The Red Water The aim of this experiment is to observe and record the rate of the blue water in the dialysis tube diffusing into the beaker containing different concentrations of salt over 20 minutes to see what effect the concentrations of salt has on the rate of diffusion. The hypothesized of this experiment is that the blue water in dialysis tube 3 will have a faster rate of blue dye diffusing into the salt water in beaker 3. Beaker 1 will have the slowest rate of blue dye diffusing from the dialysis tube into the salt water and beaker 2 will result in a colour in between beaker 1 and 3. This is because the concentration of salt in the beaker is higher than the water in the dialysis tubes so the salt water will go into the dialysis tube while the blue water in the dialysis tube will diffusion into the beaker. This experiment was performed by measuring out the same amount of water into each of the 3 beakers and adding different amounts of salt to each one to change the concentration. 3 dialysis tubes containing water and 3 drops of blue dye were tied at one end, then tied at the other using cotton thread before placing them one each into the different concentrated beaker cotton tied end facing down. In reality, man men from the lower working classes joined ANZAC as a way to avoid poverty and low wage work. Archy and Frank s relationship is a heroic and romantic view of the Gallipoli Campaign, yet it does show the horror and carnage of bloody murder of young men, such as Archy, that died in this failed attack against the Turkish Army.
