Joe Morningstar is compiling a CD titled "Millennials: Aging Like Wine" featuring 10 rock songs that Millennials between ages 20-25 can relate to. The songs portray common hardships in life and themes of not wanting good things to end. Songs were selected that demonstrate struggles from an early age through adulthood and emphasize standing up for yourself and never giving up. The compilation aims to provide an album that spans over many years with different subgenres united by their shared message.

Compilation CD Project Title: “Millenials: Aging Like Wine”
CD Theme: This CD is a compilation of songs dedicated to Millennials who may
desire an album that spans over many years, consisting of different sub-genres
of rock. The thing that brings these songs together is the point they are all trying
to make: everyone has difficult times throughout their lives. Many different songs
can portray the hardship and struggles of life, no matter when it was released or
who wrote it. Something I’ve always been drawn to are songs that are upbeat
and powerful instrumentally, while the lyrics consist of something that many
Millennials can relate to, especially between the ages of 20 and 25.
Song Title #1: “Everlong”
Songwriters: Dave Grohl
Artist: The Foo Fighters
Album Title: The Colour and the Shape
Release Date: May 20, 1997
Record Label: RCA Records
Chart History/Awards: Billboard Singles – Mainstream Rock (Peak 4), Modern
Rock Tracks (Peak 3).
References (APA format): Grohl, D. (1996). Everlong (Foo Fighters). The Colour
and the Shape (CD). Woodinville, Washington, and Washington, DC. (May 20,
1997).
Explanation/Rationale: (Why it was selected and how it ties into your theme. See
assignment instructions for more information).
“Everlong” seems to be a pretty self-explanatory title for this song. When I hear it,
it makes me empathize with not wanting a good thing to ever go away. Most
people will feel this at some point or another, but everything comes to an end at
some point. This song may not give you that feeling, but the lyrics can certainly
remind you of a time when you had it.
Song Title #2: “Dammit”
Songwriters: Mark Hoppus, Tom DeLonge, Scott Raynor
2. Artist: Blink 182
Album Title: Dude Ranch
Release Date: June 17, 1997
Record Label: MCA Records/ Cargo Music
Chart History/Awards: Billboard Singles – Mainstream Rock (Peak 26), Modern
Rock Tracks (Peak 11).
References (APA format): Hoppus, M., Delonge, T., Raynor, S. (1996). Dammit
(Blink 182). Dude Ranch (CD). Encinitas, California. (June 17, 1997).
Explanation/Rationale: (Why it was selected and how it ties into your theme. See
assignment instructions for more information).
I chose this song because the lyrics can be considered very personal to a
number of Millenials who have learned that break-ups can be hard, and that
relationships are never a sure thing. I wanted this to be one of the first songs to
demonstrate how early on in life you can realize something like this. It follows the
theme of having the feeling of never wanting something to end.
Song Title #3: “Anywhere With You”
Songwriters: Chris Conley
Artist: Saves the Day
Album Title: In Reverie
Release Date: September 16th
, 2003
Record Label: Dreamworks SKG
Chart History/Awards: None.
References (APA format): Conley, C. (2003). Anywhere With You (Saves the
Day). In Reverie (CD). Beverly Hills, California.
Explanation/Rationale: (Why it was selected and how it ties into your theme. See
assignment instructions for more information).
This song can be analyzed in many different forms. What I’ve always gotten from
it is someone who you can no longer bare the sight of, for almost any number of
reasons. Have you ever stopped associating with someone because you had
stronger feelings for him or her than they did for you? When I hear the main
guitar lines and how mad yet playful it sounds along with the lyrics, I can’t help
but feel a little empowered.
Song Title #4: “Warning”
Songwriters: Billie Joe Armstrong
3. Artist: Green Day
Album Title: Warning
Release Date: October 3rd
, 2000
Record Label: Reprise Records
Chart History/Awards: Billboard Singles – Modern Rock Tracks (Peak 3),
Mainstream Rock (Peak 24), Adult Top 40 (31).
References (APA format): Armstrong, B. (2000). Warning (Green Day). Warning:
(CD). Oakland, California.
Explanation/Rationale: (Why it was selected and how it ties into your theme. See
assignment instructions for more information).
Green Day turned towards a lighter style on “Warning:” yet I felt like it fit the
lyrics. It seems to be a fairly optimistic yet sarcastic message stating that maybe
we should all just go with our gut instinct rather than listening to the words of
others. I’ve noticed that Millennials tend want to make their own decisions and
learn from their own mistakes. I believe this song is meaningful to my target
market by making a statement that it is never wrong to do as you please in order
to be happy, as long as it isn’t hurting anyone of course.
Song Title #5: “Seize the Day”
Songwriters: Matt Sanders, Brian Haner Jr., Zacky Baker, Jimmy Sulllivan, John
Steward
Artist: Avenged Sevenfold
Album Title: City of Evil
Release Date: June 7th
, 2005
Record Label: Warner Bros.
Chart History/Awards: Billboard Singles – Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks (Peak
17).
References (APA format): Sanders, M., Haner Jr., B., Baker, Z., Sullivan, J.,
Steward, J. (2005). Seize the Day (Avenged Sevenfold). City of Evil (CD).
Burbank, California.
Explanation/Rationale: (Why it was selected and how it ties into your theme. See
assignment instructions for more information).
I felt that “Seize the Day” was an appropriate choice because it is probably the
deepest, most emotional, and falls towards the middle of the compilation CD to
create a dynamic effect. The song is clearly saying how many things can get in
the way of doing what you truly care about. And at the end of the day, it’s usually
4. making time for the people that have always been there for you.
Song Title #6: “A Decade Under the Influence”
Songwriters: Adam Lazzara, Fred Mascherino, Eddie Reyes, Matthew Rubano,
Mark O’Connell
Artist: Taking Back Sunday
Album Title: Where You Want to Be
Release Date: July 27th
, 2004
Record Label: Victory Records
Chart History/Awards: Billboard Singles – Modern Rock Tracks (Peak 16)
References (APA format): Lazzara, A., Macherino, F., Reyes, E., Rubano, M.,
O’Connell, M. (2004). A Decade Under the Influence (Taking Back Sunday).
Where You Want to Be (CD).
Explanation/Rationale: (Why it was selected and how it ties into your theme. See
assignment instructions for more information).
This song was chosen because when interpreting the lyrics I feel as if it is almost
is a dialogue between one’s self: past and present. I also feel like it could be
painting a picture of someone who knows they’re getting into a relationship that
won’t work; yet they do it anyway. It’s almost as if the song actually meets a
climax towards the end which is based on the initial suspicion of the relationship
not working out.
Song Title #7: ”Tortures of the Damned”
Songwriters: Anthony Raneri, Jack O’Shea
Artist: Bayside
Album Title: Bayside (self-titled)
Release Date: August 23rd
, 2005
Record Label: Victory Records
Chart History/Awards: None.
References (APA format): Raneri, A., O’Shea, J. (2005). Tortures of the Damned
(Bayside). Bayside (CD). New York City, New York.
Explanation/Rationale: (Why it was selected and how it ties into your theme. See
assignment instructions for more information).
“Tortures of the Damned” is quite relevant to the target market because of how
5. raw Anthony Raneri’s words are from beginning to end. It tells a story of how sick
and tired a young person can get just from life beating them down. It’s normal for
Millenials to ask, “Why is this happening to me and not someone else?” I think
that this song indicates a breaking point in which certain people can find if the
pressures of life aren’t dealt with correctly. Plus the song is quite melodically
dramatic as well, which only makes the song that much better.
Song Title #8: “The Fallen”
Songwriters: All Lyrics by Jordan Brown
Artist: Set Your Goals
Album Title: This Will Be the Death of Us
Release Date: July 21st
, 2009
Record Label: Epitaph Records
Chart History/Awards: None.
References (APA format): Brown, J., Wilson, M., Flores Jr., A., Codaire, D.,

Death of Us (CD).

assignment instructions for more information).
This song has everything to do with following your own path, doing what you
have to do, but remembering where you came from. Not only do I consider the
instrumental tracks throughout the whole song to be phenomenal, but also the
lyrics hit close to home. I’ve been in Florida for four years now, but I could never
forget living in Upstate New York and the good times I’ve had there.
Song Title #9: “Find My Way Back”
Songwriters: Alan Day, D. O’Connor
Artist: Four Year Strong
Album Title: Enemy of the World
Release Date: March 9th
, 2010
Record Label: Decaydance, Universal Motown
Chart History/Awards: None.
References (APA format): O’Connor, D., Day, A., Weiss, J., Massucco, J.,

6. Explanation/Rationale: (Why it was selected and how it ties into your theme. See
assignment instructions for more information).
This song could be considered personal for many people listening to it. It’s a very
rock oriented song but does share deeper meaning. Any Millennial out there who
is missing their families, as many of them do, could easily listen to this tune and
feel a little better about being away. One day, they could find their way back
home.
Song Title #10: “Here We Are Juggernaut”
Songwriters: Claudio Sanchez
Artist: Coheed and Cambria
Album Title: Year of the Black Rainbow
Release Date: April 13th
, 2010
Record Label: Colombia Records
Chart History/Awards: Billboard Singles – Hot Modern Rock Tracks (Peak 29)
References (APA format): Sanchez, C., Stever, T., Todd, M., Pennie, C. (2010).
Here We Are Juggernaut (Coheed and Cambria). Year of the Black Rainbow
(CD). (December, 2009)
Explanation/Rationale: (Why it was selected and how it ties into your theme. See
assignment instructions for more information).
I chose “Here We Are Juggernaut” as my final song for this compilation mainly
because of how epic the entire composition is. It is a song based around the
premise of standing up for yourself, and how you should never give up until you
feel right again.
People face challenges everyday. It just so happens that normal people wrote all
of these songs. Therefore, even the big musicians have some kind of inspiration
to feed from, and a lot of times musicians feel as if writing about past issues is
any easy way of expressing themselves. This is lucky for us. Because of them
expressing themselves to the public, we now have a way of expressing ourselves
through listening to what they have to say.
