Venmo was founded in 2009 by Andrew Kortina and Iqram Magdon-Ismail and launched in 2012. It was acquired by Braintree later that year for $26.2 million. In 2013, PayPal acquired Braintree, and Venmo along with it, for $800 million. Venmo operates as a free, digital wallet that facilitates peer-to-peer money transfers and also charges a fee for business transactions.
