This document discusses the Community Language Learning (CLL) method for teaching second languages. CLL was developed by Charles Arthur and aims to help learners acquire a new language. It involves learners working in groups to have conversations in their native language, which are then recorded, discussed, and transcribed. There are five psychological stages of learning from complete dependence on the teacher to eventual independence. CLL has advantages like lowering student anxiety but also disadvantages like the teacher becoming too non-directive. The teacher acts as a counselor and does not impose restrictions, while learners determine the content and are allowed to use their native language.

8. Five psychological stages from childhood to adulthood
1. Birth : the learners know nothing of the target language, and
are completely dependent on the knower .
2. Self : the learners start to get an idea of how the language
works and to use it for themselves, but still seek the knower’s
help.

9. 3. Separate Existence : they start to use the language without
referring to the knower.
4. Adolescence : Learners start to turn back to the knower.
5. Independence : learners can continue their learning
independently. They no longer need the knower.
