Unit objectives:
At the completion of this unit, students will be able to:
• Introduce and describe the functions / goals of
international health and nursing organizations:
i.e.
1- International Health Organizations:
• World Health Organization (WHO)
2- Nursing Organizations:
• Pakistan Nursing Association, Federation and Council
and International Council of Nursing.
1. World Health Organization
Introduction:
• World Health Organization is established in 7th
April 1948.
• It is a specialized, non-political, health agency of
United Nation with headquarter of Geneva,
Switzerland.
• It is responsible for providing leadership on
global health matters.
• Every year 7th April, is celebrated as “World
Health Day”

• “To lead strategic collaborative efforts among
Member States and other partners to promote
equity in health, to combat disease, and to
improve the quality of, and lengthen, the lives of

2- United Nations Organization (UN)
• What is the United Nations ?
International Health Organizations
3. World Food Programme
(WFP)
• is the food-assistance branch of
the United Nations.
• The largest one focused on
hunger and food security and
the largest provider of school
meals.
• Founded in 1961, it is
headquartered in Rome Italy and
has offices in 80 countries.
4. United Nations International Children’s
Emergency Fund
• is the UN organization mandated to protect the
rights of every child, everywhere, especially the
most disadvantaged.
• UNICEF's activities include providing
immunizations and disease prevention,
administering treatment for children and
mothers with HIV, enhancing childhood and
maternal nutrition, improving sanitation,
promoting education, and providing emergency
relief in response to disasters.

Nursing Organizations
1. Pakistan Nurses Federation
• The PNF was registered on July 6, 1972,
by the Assistant Registrar, Joint Stock
Companies, Lahore, under Societies Act
1860, as a success to the Trained Nurses
Association of Pakistan which was
founded and duly registered in 1949.
Functions of PNF
1. Welfare and betterment of nurses, midwives
and health visitors in Pakistan.
2. Set and improve high ethical and professional
standards among nurses.
3. Improve professional knowledge and skills of
the nurses.
4. Publish educational material to update nursing
practices.
Vision / Mission:
• To work for the welfare and betterment of all
categories of Nurses, Midwives and Health
Visitors in Pakistan.
President:
• Shazia Sobia Aslam Soomro, who is also member
National Assembly (MNA), elected as President
of the Council at the Council 32nd session held
under section 7 (1) of PNC act 1973.
Nursing Organization
2. Pakistan Nursing Council (PNC)
• The PNC is an autonomous, regulatory body
constituted under the Pakistan Nursing Council Act
(1952, 1973) and empowered to register (license)
Nurses, Midwives, Lady Health Visitors (LHVs) and
Nursing Auxiliaries to practice in Pakistan. PNC was
established in 1948.
Functions of the PNC
• PNC sets the curriculum for the education of
Nurses, Midwives, LHVs and Nursing Auxiliaries.
• PNC inspects educational institutions for
approval based on established standards.
• PNC provides registration (license) to practice.
• PNC maintains standards of education and
practice.
• PNC works closely with the four provincial
Nursing Examination Boards (NEBs).

• PNC plays and advisory role for the overall benefit of
Nurses, Midwives, LHVs and Nursing Auxiliaries in the
country.
• PNC maintains an advisory role for the Federal and
Provincial governments regarding nursing education
and nursing services.
• PNC communicates policy decisions regarding nursing
education and the welfare of nurses, taken in Council
meetings, to Governments, Nursing Institutions, NEBs
and Armed Forces Nursing Services for
implementation.
• PNC prescribes penalties for fraudulent registration by
the intention of pretense, and removes persons from
the Register for professional misconduct.
PNC VISION & MISSION
Vision:
• Nurses and midwives of Pakistan, supported by
strong governance and education systems,
contribute to improving the health and quality of life
of communities by providing quality, humanistic
services and fostering partnerships with other
health and social disciplines.
• In alliance with government and key stakeholders
they work to deliver universal health coverage and
act within the framework of sustainable
development goals.
PNC VISION & MISSION
Mission:
1. Strengthen and advance the nursing and
midwifery professions to enable them to provide
leadership and contribute fully to the
improvement and development of health care
services and education system for nursing and
midwifery in Pakistan.
2. Improve the functioning of professional and
regulatory bodies to increase levels of public
protection and trust by ensuring the delivery of
quality services, educating and fostering
competent, confident, ethical nurses and
midwives.

3. International Council of Nurses
• The (ICN) is a federation of more than 130 national
nurses associations (NNAs), representing the more
than 20 million nurses worldwide.
• Founded in 1899, headquarter in Geneva
Switzerland, ICN is the world’s first and widest
reaching international organization for health
professionals. Operated by nurses and leading
nurses internationally, ICN works to ensure quality
nursing care for all, sound health policies globally,
the advancement of nursing knowledge, and the
presence worldwide of a respected nursing
profession and a competent and satisfied nursing
workforce

3. International Council of Nurses
Functions of ICN: ICN works to:
1. Ensure quality nursing care for all.
2. Improve the advancement of nursing knowledge.
3. Formulates code of ethics for nurses.
4. Promote and development of strong national
nurses association.
5. Assist to improve standard and competence of
nurses.
6. Serve as the authoritative voice of nurses and
nursing internationally.
ICN Mission:
• To represent nursing worldwide, advance the
nursing profession, promote the wellbeing of
nurses, and advocate for health in all policies.
ICN Vision:
• The global community recognizes, supports, and
invests in nurses and nursing to lead and deliver
health for all.

World Health Organization Introduction: • World Health Organization is established in 7th April 1948. • It is a specialized, non-political, health agency of United Nation with headquarter of Geneva, Switzerland. • It is responsible for providing leadership on global health matters. • Every year 7th April, is celebrated as “World Health Day”

United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund • is the UN organization mandated to protect the rights of every child, everywhere, especially the most disadvantaged. • UNICEF's activities include providing immunizations and disease prevention, administering treatment for children and mothers with HIV, enhancing childhood and maternal nutrition, improving sanitation, promoting education, and providing emergency relief in response to disasters.

  • 13. Nursing Organizations 1. Pakistan Nurses Federation • The PNF was registered on July 6, 1972, by the Assistant Registrar, Joint Stock Companies, Lahore, under Societies Act 1860, as a success to the Trained Nurses Association of Pakistan which was founded and duly registered in 1949.
  • 14. Functions of PNF 1. Welfare and betterment of nurses, midwives and health visitors in Pakistan. 2. Set and improve high ethical and professional standards among nurses. 3. Improve professional knowledge and skills of the nurses. 4. Publish educational material to update nursing practices.
  • 15. Vision / Mission: • To work for the welfare and betterment of all categories of Nurses, Midwives and Health Visitors in Pakistan. President: • Shazia Sobia Aslam Soomro, who is also member National Assembly (MNA), elected as President of the Council at the Council 32nd session held under section 7 (1) of PNC act 1973.

Pakistan Nursing Council (PNC) • The PNC is an autonomous, regulatory body constituted under the Pakistan Nursing Council Act (1952, 1973) and empowered to register (license) Nurses, Midwives, Lady Health Visitors (LHVs) and Nursing Auxiliaries to practice in Pakistan. PNC was established in 1948.
  • 17. Functions of the PNC • PNC sets the curriculum for the education of Nurses, Midwives, LHVs and Nursing Auxiliaries. • PNC inspects educational institutions for approval based on established standards. • PNC provides registration (license) to practice. • PNC maintains standards of education and practice. • PNC works closely with the four provincial Nursing Examination Boards (NEBs).

Functions: Continued… • PNC plays and advisory role for the overall benefit of Nurses, Midwives, LHVs and Nursing Auxiliaries in the country. • PNC maintains an advisory role for the Federal and Provincial governments regarding nursing education and nursing services. • PNC communicates policy decisions regarding nursing education and the welfare of nurses, taken in Council meetings, to Governments, Nursing Institutions, NEBs and Armed Forces Nursing Services for implementation. • PNC prescribes penalties for fraudulent registration by the intention of pretense, and removes persons from the Register for professional misconduct.

PNC VISION & MISSION Vision: • Nurses and midwives of Pakistan, supported by strong governance and education systems, contribute to improving the health and quality of life of communities by providing quality, humanistic services and fostering partnerships with other health and social disciplines. • In alliance with government and key stakeholders they work to deliver universal health coverage and act within the framework of sustainable development goals.
  • 20. PNC VISION & MISSION Mission: 1. Strengthen and advance the nursing and midwifery professions to enable them to provide leadership and contribute fully to the improvement and development of health care services and education system for nursing and midwifery in Pakistan. 2. Improve the functioning of professional and regulatory bodies to increase levels of public protection and trust by ensuring the delivery of quality services, educating and fostering competent, confident, ethical nurses and midwives.

International Council of Nurses • The (ICN) is a federation of more than 130 national nurses associations (NNAs), representing the more than 20 million nurses worldwide. • Founded in 1899, headquarter in Geneva Switzerland, ICN is the world’s first and widest reaching international organization for health professionals. Operated by nurses and leading nurses internationally, ICN works to ensure quality nursing care for all, sound health policies globally, the advancement of nursing knowledge, and the presence worldwide of a respected nursing profession and a competent and satisfied nursing workforce
