What is communication
 Communication – is the act of transferring information from one place, person
or group to another.
 It has three parts: the sender, the message and the recipient . The
communication has to be effective, where there will be understanding
between two parties that are communicating, the message is understood by
the receiver the way it was intended by the sender.
 The sender conceives a message while the receiver listen to the verbal
message, and the sender is idea encodes while the receiver decodes the
message then interprets, sending feedback or response.
Types of communication
 Verbal communication
 Non verbal communication
 Written communication
WRITTEN COMMUNICATION
VERBAL COMMUNICATION
Types of communication
Verbal communication – Is a type of oral communication where the message is
transmitted through the spoken words. For example, phone call and face to face.
Non verbal communication- is the transfer of information through body language
facial expressions, gestures, created space. For example smiling when you meet
someone conveys friendship
Written communication – is the exchange of information, ideas, or messages
through written language in the form of letters, emails, notes and many more.
Communication channels
 Communication channel- is the medium through which the message
travels in the communication process.
Examples of communication channels
Face to face communication
Video conferencing
Emails
Phone calls
Text messages
WhatsApp
Facial expression
Television

 Interpersonal communication
 Intrapersonal communication
 Extra personal commination
 Mass communication
INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION
Categories of communication
 Intrapersonal communication- communication to one self/alone . All those
inner thought processes that are going on in your minds both consciously or
subconsciously. For example, thought in the toilet.
 Inter personal communication-communication between two people or among
individuals in a group. For example a doctor and a patient.
 Extra personal communication – communication between a person and a
thing/animal , person and animal or plant . For example a baby girl and a
doll.
 Mass communication- communication between a person and a large target
population via media like radio or television.
Barriers to communication/ factors that
lead to poor communication.
 Inability to listen to others
 Too much information
 Cultural differences and language
 People attitudes and emotional states
 Arguments
 Pre judgement
 Conflicts in work place
 Non verbal signals
