Communication presentation workshop

Editor's Notes

  1. Communication – The transference of a message from one to another -- It may be in the form of words, pictures, gestures Requirements – Message / Sender / Receiver Success blockers –
  2. Communication requires three elements Message Sender Receiver Whether spoken, image or print all communication has these three elements
  3. Some potential blockers to communication offered here
  4. Continued – Third line typo, is intentional. Distractions in messages can cause some recipients to loose focus.
  5. Perception matters Preconception matters Detail focus could prevent receiving the large message from communication
  6. What you see is often driven by your expectations – conscious or unconscious. All Elephants have 4 legs – and that expectation may have you looking to see where the 4 legs are on this image can be found
  7. What you focus on impacts your ability to process a message
  8. Unstated expectations Requirements that are in some manner left unclear or under-defined
  9. What gets in the way of a message being received? Conflict – This person rarely listens to me so why bother speaking up (or) This person talks forever, when will they realize I understand the message and I have moved on (I am no longer listening to them) Language barriers – Someone British may ask for the lou, … where someone in the US may ask for the restroom Personal issues – Exhaustion, health, … maybe vacation was delayed for a meeting the recipient is required to attend – so recipient is not focused and present
  10. Exercise is to have one person describe a picture of a simple house. Second person – separated by a wall from first person will draw what is described Both participants will be with their backs to the larger audience Audience will be able to view all images No speaking other than the person describing how to draw the house No questions can be asked by either person Instruction provider is intentionally denied visual feedback Goal is to gain understanding of the value of real time feedback Additional challenge is to learn the value of empathy when offering instruction – tailored to the recipient’s ability to process
  11. Exercise is to put on a simple jacket Two volunteers One is the instruction provider One is the instruction recipient Instruction provider offers detailed instruction Instruction recipient can ONLY act based on instructions received Instruction provider – has back toward the chair containing the jacket the instruction recipient will adorn Instruction provider is intentionally denied visual feedback Goal is to experience the benefit of feedback when communicating any message
  12. Total time for this presentation is about one hour. It can be shortened (perhaps 10 minutes shorter) by reducing dialogue built into presentation.
