Virtual Discussions to Support Climate Risk Decision Making on FarmsHelen Farley
Climate variability represents a significant risk to farming enterprises. Effective extension of climate information may improve climate risk decision making and adaptive management responses to climate variability on farms. This paper briefly reviews current agricultural extension approaches and reports stakeholder responses to new web-based virtual world ‘discussion-support’ tools developed for the Australian sugar cane farming industry. These tools incorporate current climate science and sugar industry better management practices, while leveraging the social-learning aspects of farming, to provide a stimulus for discussion and climate risk decision making. Responses suggest that such virtual world tools may provide effective support for climate risk decision making on Australian sugar cane farms. Increasing capacity to deliver such tools online also suggests potential to engage large numbers of farmers globally.
This presentation is an overview of the Community-Based Environmental Monitoring Network (CBEMN) at Saint Mary's University. The CBEMN assists community groups in monitoring, networking, and in resolving environmental issues.

Model-Driven Engineering (MDE) is a software engineering paradigm that uses models as main assets in all development phases. While many languages for model manipulation exist (e.g., for model transformation or code generation), there is a lack of frameworks to de ne and apply model mutations.
A model mutant is a variation of an original model, created by specific model mutation operations. Model mutation has many applications, for instance, in the areas of model transformation testing, model-based testing or education.In this paper, we present a domain-speci c language, called
Wodel, for the speci cation and generation of model mutants. Wodel is domain-independent, as it can be used to generate mutants of models conforming to arbitrary metamodels. Its development environment is extensible, permitting the incorporation of post-processors for di erent applications. As an example, we show an application consisting on the automated generation of exercises for particular domains (automata, class diagrams, electronic circuits, etc.).

Negative communication effects in a lead contaminated mining area in southeastern Brazil

Scientists and professionals who deal with environmental and public health issues recognize the importance of displaying the results of their research projects to the local population in an appropriate form, especially when they indicate risk situations. This process is known as risk communication and includes strategies to facilitate understanding of relevant data and their implications by the public. One important benefit of that strategy is promoting public involvement in decision processes to solve or attenuate risk situations.
In this context, risk communication has intensely been discussed in many countries where participation of the community in the risk management process was achieved as a consequence of correct information. Unfortunately, this subject has not been debated in Brazil, as it should be. On account of this, environmental and public health researchers continue to face difficulties to establish an appropriate dialogue with local communities.
The present study focuses on the actions adopted by scientists from the University of Campinas for disseminating their results on lead contamination and human exposure in the mining district of Adrian—polis, southeastern Brazil. At the first moment, several families received the assistance of health authorities and some environmental intervention actions were planed for the area. Notwithstanding, due to the media sensationalism about the case and the lack of efficient communication, Adrian—polis residents have suffered stigmatization for their health problems and this negative effect has been a determinant factor to become some of them unwilling to cooperate in future research. Here we present our experience and research outcomes regarding one of the possible approaches to disseminate knowledge. The independent educational project with flexible formula provides many benefits both for participants, and teachers. The advantages incudes, but are not limited to, clearly hearable voice in public debate and/or useful preliminary results from experimental research. We argument here also for significant educational impact of this approach.
Environmental concerns are increasingly relevant to everyone, and an informed public is a critical ingredient in the necessary practical steps and policy changes needed to alleviate the developing crisis. Environmental issues have become more entwined as communication technologies proliferate. The aim of this paper is to contribute to the understanding of the media dynamics with reference to the environmental issues alarmingly challenging to human continued survival. The scientists are disturbed for its insecurity, mis-governance, degradation, management and conservation which have gradually come to capture the centre stage. At this juncture, the role of media becomes pertinent in spreading environmental awareness and making the public aware of the formidable crisis looming large over our heads. Although environmental problems are typically discovered by scientists but it is media that often play a central role in disseminating information, influencing peoples attitude and promoting public awareness. Media are the cornerstone of any public opinion and acts as a catalyst for change.The ultimate objective of this paper is to find the most decisive factors in creating awareness since this is the first step in developing effective campaigns to promote and protect the integrity of the natural environment for prosperity amongst the population. This paper is an attempt to review the meaning of environment education, its aims and objectives, and ways of promoting environmental awareness in the society.A major challenge to environmental reporting is how to convey complex concepts and impart a sense of the urgency of these challenges in a way that engages the reader .The paper also explores the evolving field of environmental journalism which prefers objectivity over advocacy (Sachsman, 2006:112) with utmost professionalism and scientific information. There is a need for more accurate and unbiased reporting in framing and forming some of the main determinants of public opinion. Sociologist Gaye Tuchman(1978) argues that the news reconstruct social world and are a window to the world, determining, what we want to know, what we have to know and what we should know.
