YOUNG LEARNERS… A BIG CHALLENGE
MAIN CHARACTERISTICS OF YOUNG LEARNERS:
 Young learners learn in different ways. (by
listening, watching, imitating and doing)
 Visual resources help students to
understand.
 They feel comfortable with routines and
enjoy repetitions.
 They love playing and movement - Simon Says
 They have a short attention span- Provide variety of
activities
“Hello Song”
 They are pleased to
have teachers´
approval
 Limited reading and
writing skills in their
first language.
Capital letters
SECOND LANGUAGE ACQUISITION
Communicative Approach
Communicating in English main goal.
During my practicum:
 English as the language of the class. (Greetings, instructions)
 Gestures and mime.
 Let students use Spanish. Recast what they say.
Children are like clay...they are
modelled by those who surround
them.
Conclusion:
The practicum let me discover
that, although young learners
are marvellous, I still prefer
working with adolescents...
RESOURCES:
 “ English for Primary Teachers”, Slattery and
Wills.
 “Success in English Teaching”, Pearse and
Davies
