Career Development Presentation - 11 Feb 2011 - Mentoring best practice

Editor's Notes

  • #2 Don-Good Morning I’m Don and one of the steering committee members. Sarah- I’m Sarah and job title!Between us we are going to provide some helpful info to address issues 80% of your mentees have raised about their careers
  • #3 To save you taking copious notes we will be e-mailing you a copy of this presentation on Monday.First of all- some of the knowledge and skills you will need:
  • #4 1st of all there are different requirements for…Unfortunately there isn’t a book which covers all of this. (some people can be all of that)
  • #5 But across all of those the first thing you need is a plan! Most people just dive in on the next thing rather than think about where they want to go.eg train journey…Coventry stationBetter to establish where you want to go in the first place, then at least what you do next will be aligned to your long term goals…
  • #6 Here is a demonstration where it would have paid to work out the plan!
  • #8 Getting everything down on one page isn’t easy and may take some time, be honest about your position, what you want and especially your preferences, value etc, you may need to compromise.Start at long term goals personal and professional examples honest with preferences values and constraints etc holistic document keep up to date. If you cannot outline on this one page what you want and need how can you talk to someone about it.
  • #9 Do you want to:find out how networking can help you achieve your career goals?
  • #10 Throughout your career there will be times of assessment and reflection, times of change and times where you need expert advice and support to realise your career potential. To ensure you have everything you need to reach your career goals we have developed Careers+. As part of this service we provide:
  • #20 Between Sarah and I we are now going to share some of our collective wisdom with you and give you a few tips….
  • #21 First of all let’s look at CVs and covering letters….
  • #22 Let’s look at the different ways you might find a job…I’m going to focus on the first two since as Sarah said earlier statistically this is most likely where your next job will come from…
  • #23 What networking isn’t-is going to an evening do in Cov with 200 other people none of whom know each other who when talking to each other discover that they are all looking for a job!Networking is about using people you don’t yet know as well as people you know to help you with advice. DO NOT ASK THEM FOR A JOB.Informational interviews-ask for views/advice/paint pictures of job roles/ industry (Career crossroads).2-way street…is there anything I can do to help you?!Use example of recently helping IT director to meet senior contact in employer of choiceIn brief-how many of you are LinkedIn? If you are not I would urge you to join asap-takes 15 mins. (I’m not on commision!)It is the way to network-used by recruiters and companies alike-Google
  • #24 Allied to networking are direct approached to cos.By dir app what I don’t mean is sending an e-mail that says “dear Sir Richard I would love to work for the virgin Gp”It is a waste of time and money! However, the following prob will work “Fred, your sales director, and I both grad together from WBS in 1992. he has asked me to contact you direct since I have a renowned expertise in volcanic ash dispersal”There are 2 diff beteween these apps1 Identify a common person you both know2 identify a reason he needs youPs do not send your CV with this e-mail because that is saying you want a job!Examples if we have time….
  • #25 For my final parts of this session I’m going to talk to you about interview techniques.1st-tel-used by many recruiters as a quick way to reduce the no of people who need to be seen face to face. The Golden rule is in the middle of the slide-do not attempt to have an interview in a train station or the middle of a supermarket. Keep control and reschedule for a convenient time and location.and then you are well prepared with your materials around you!Stand up-you sound more confident Don’t give out your home phone no-partners and children pick up and you are advertising that you are out of work. This is used as recruiters can do 30-40 of these in a day.
  • #26 You will all have heard that people make up their mind in the first 20 seconds…1 Go ahead of time-you’ve only got one chance to make that first impression. Share example…Remember it is a two way process…go armed with some sensible questions.
  • #27 And finally let’s have a look at some selection techniques:How many of you have been on an assessment centre?Competency based interviews…
  • #28 EVENT It’s a KAIROS moment; a special time. Chronos is the passing of time…1st half of circle is about how I start to change my mind – have it renewed… I observe… (that is a very profound statement, very significant event, etc ) I reflect... (I wrote it down- think about my own life –).WE discuss…Look at the second half on the circle. – No good reflecting and learning unless I put it into action!I make a PLAN. ( what I will do …)I get someone to hold me to ACCOUNT. (Ask me …)And none of that is worth much – unless and until… I ACT!Sometimes go through rapidly – other times over many years…
  • #29 End on a funny with the man fish lifetime fable!
  • #30 Mention Q&A session and length later in day!
