Coaxial Cables
What is Coaxial Cables???
 Definition:- Coaxial cable is a
type of copper cable specially
built with a metal shield and
other components engineered
to block signal interference. It is
primarily used by cable TV
companies to connect their
satellite antenna facilities to
customer homes and
businesses. It is also
sometimes used by telephone
companies to connect central
offices to telephone poles near
customers. Some homes and
offices use coaxial cable, too,
but its widespread use as
an Ethernet connectivity
medium in enterprises and data
centers has been supplanted by
the deployment of twisted pair
cabling.

Coaxial cable received its name
because it includes one
physical channel that carries the
signal surrounded -- after a layer of
insulation -- by another concentric
physical channel, both running along
the same axis. The outer channel
serves as a ground. Many of these
cables or pairs of coaxial tubes can be
placed in a single outer sheathing
and, with repeaters, can carry
information for a great distance.
History of Coaxial Cable
 Coaxial cable was invented by
English engineer and mathematician
 Oliver Heaviside, who patented the
design in 1880.The discovery is then
fell into obscurity for many years
because surely there was nothing to
make pass in coaxial cable
 The real discovery and its actual use
dates back to 1929 due to the need
for a more efficient and with less
interferences conductor for the
transmissions of many telephone
channels on a single “carrier”.
 Perhaps none of us have never
thought that the develop of radio
communications never have been
possible without the invention of
coaxial cable, It is continuously used
in our application that we don’t think
about it
Working of coaxial Cable
 Defining that core is
connected to positive
terminal and use as
conductor and outer
metallic foil connected
to ground also use
second conductor and
shield for noise

Construction of Coaxial cables
 Coaxial Cable contains:
 Inner Central Core Conductor-A
central core conductor of solid or
stranded wire usually copper
 Outer Metallic Conductor Shied- A
metal foil enclosed between inner and
outer insulator.
 Inner Insulator- An insulating
sheathes which encloses inner core
conductor to inner and outer
conductor from each other.

 They used to be common for implementing computer networks,
in particular Ethernet
 Long distance coaxial was used in the 20th century to connect
 Radio networks
 Television networks
 Long distance telephone
 Micro coaxial cables are used in
• A range of consumer devices
• Military equipment
• Ultra-sound scanning equipment
Note:-The most common impedances that are widely
used are 50 or 52ohms,
and 75ohms, although other impedances are
available for specific application

Advantages Disadvantages
 Coaxial cable is still the
most common means of
data transmission over
sort distance. The
advantages are:-
 They are cheap to make.
 Cheap to install.
 Easy to Modify
 Good Bandwidth
 Great channel capacity
 Noise immunity due to law
error rate
 Signals entering the cable can
cause unwanted noise and
picture ghosting. making it
useless.
 A continuous current flow,
even if small, along the
imperfect shield of a coaxial
cable can cause visible or
audible interference.
 More expensive than twisted
pairs and is not supported for
network standards
 Its also has high attenuation,
have the need to implement
repeaters

  • 4. What is Coaxial Cables???  Definition:- Coaxial cable is a type of copper cable specially built with a metal shield and other components engineered to block signal interference. It is primarily used by cable TV companies to connect their satellite antenna facilities to customer homes and businesses. It is also sometimes used by telephone companies to connect central offices to telephone poles near customers. Some homes and offices use coaxial cable, too, but its widespread use as an Ethernet connectivity medium in enterprises and data centers has been supplanted by the deployment of twisted pair cabling.

Coaxial cable received its name because it includes one physical channel that carries the signal surrounded -- after a layer of insulation -- by another concentric physical channel, both running along the same axis. The outer channel serves as a ground. Many of these cables or pairs of coaxial tubes can be placed in a single outer sheathing and, with repeaters, can carry information for a great distance.

History of Coaxial Cable  Coaxial cable was invented by English engineer and mathematician  Oliver Heaviside, who patented the design in 1880.The discovery is then fell into obscurity for many years because surely there was nothing to make pass in coaxial cable  The real discovery and its actual use dates back to 1929 due to the need for a more efficient and with less interferences conductor for the transmissions of many telephone channels on a single “carrier”.  Perhaps none of us have never thought that the develop of radio communications never have been possible without the invention of coaxial cable, It is continuously used in our application that we don’t think about it

The advantages are:-  They are cheap to make.  Cheap to install.  Easy to Modify  Good Bandwidth  Great channel capacity  Noise immunity due to law error rate  Signals entering the cable can cause unwanted noise and picture ghosting. making it useless.  A continuous current flow, even if small, along the imperfect shield of a coaxial cable can cause visible or audible interference.  More expensive than twisted pairs and is not supported for network standards  Its also has high attenuation, have the need to implement repeaters
