Chiradeep Vittal is a Distinguished Engineer in the Converged Infrastructure Group at Citrix where he has technology leadership responsibilities around Citrix Cloud Platform, Citrix Lifecycle Manager and Citrix Workspace Pod. He is also a Project Management Committee member of the Apache CloudStack Project. At cloud.com (acquired by Citrix), he was a founding engineer, often tasked with the thorny details of virtualized networking and storage. Prior to cloud.com, he worked at several Silicon Valley startups in various architectural roles.
Chiradeep has a B.Tech in Computer Science from IIT, Bombay and a M.Sc from the University of Alberta. This talk describes the approach and challenges of building managed services such as DataStax Enterprise Cassandra with automated lifecycle management using BOSH & Pivotal Cloud Foundry including a detailed discussion of the ease of Day 2 operations such as software upgrades and backups that is supported in the offering.
The presentation includes a demonstration on the use of BOSH and Pivotal Cloud Foundry to build a managed DataStax Enterprise Cassandra service that allows operators to provide a comprehensive Cassandra offering that deploys production ready clusters.

What are clouds made from
Clouds are made of on-demand, scalable computing resources that are accessed as a service via the internet. There are different cloud deployment models (public, private, hybrid) and service models (IaaS, PaaS, SaaS). Infrastructure as a service (IaaS) clouds provide fundamental computing resources like storage, networking and virtual machines, while platform as a service (PaaS) clouds provide additional services like databases, messaging queues and development tools. Choosing between IaaS and PaaS involves considering factors like lock-in to the cloud vendor, control over the infrastructure, and application requirements.
Building your own PaaS using Apache Stratos

One of the big hurdles for an enterprise to move to the cloud is the fear of getting locked into a specific cloud implementation. This is one of the big reasons apart from security of data that keeps most of the enterprises out of the cloud space. Currently each vendor provides their unique set of API to interact with their Cloud services. This mandates a need to recode and refactor when moving from one cloud provider to the other.
jClouds is a multi cloud framework which allows connection to multiple clouds such as Amazon, VMWare, Azure, and Rackspace. jClouds provides portable abstractions for cloud specific features, thus allowing the application to move from one cloud vendor to the other with relative ease. jClouds also had a simulators to operate in restricted environments like Google App Engine and Android. Unit testing and mocking is made easy through stub connections which simulate the cloud.

One of the big hurdles for an enterprise to move to the cloud is the fear of getting locked into a specific cloud implementation. This is one of the big reasons apart from security of data that keeps most of the enterprises out of the cloud space. Currently each vendor provides their unique set of API to interact with their Cloud services. This mandates a need to recode and refactor when moving from one cloud provider to the other.
jClouds is a multi cloud framework which allows connection to multiple clouds such as Amazon, VMWare, Azure, and Rackspace. jClouds provides portable abstractions for cloud specific features, thus allowing the application to move from one cloud vendor to the other with relative ease. jClouds also had a simulators to operate in restricted environments like Google App Engine and Android. Unit testing and mocking is made easy through stub connections which simulate the cloud.
