This document provides an overview of cloud computing concepts including definitions, characteristics, service models, deployment models and examples. It defines cloud computing according to NIST as a model for enabling network access to configurable computing resources that can be provisioned with minimal management effort. The key characteristics are on-demand self-service, broad network access, resource pooling, rapid elasticity, and measured service. The common service models are SaaS, PaaS and IaaS. Deployment models include private, public and hybrid clouds. Examples of applications and potential benefits are also provided.

What is Cloud Computing and, How does the cloud work?
The term “cloud” is used as a substitute for the “internet”. Cloud computing points to any hardware or software like networks, software, analytics, servers, storage, databases, and intelligence provided over the internet (cloud) by any service provider.
Data, software, and source codes are often stored on hard drives, which is quite risky since difficult situations may arise such as hard disk crashes, data corruption, and eventual loss of the entire resources to work with. A cloud computing service provides various server, software, storage, and application services over the Internet so that they should be safe. They can be configured to handle any size of access or traffic and can scale up and down according to the volume and, frequency of requirement. Thus cloud computing is the delivery of different services through the Internet including different servers, software, storage, and applications. In other words, using cloud computing, customers can access software, infrastructure, platforms, devices, and other resources over the internet.
Customers can easily utilize these services available in the cloud without any prior knowledge of how to manage the resources involved.
Large companies such as Google, Amazon, IBM, Sun, Cisco, Dell, HP, Intel, Novell, and Oracle are investing in cloud computing to provide individuals and businesses with a variety of cloud-based solutions.
For example, Google Cloud is a collection of public cloud services provided by Google. All Application development is done on Google hardware. These include Google Compute Engine, App Engine, Google Cloud Storage, and Google Container Engine.
Cloud storage utilizes data centers with massive computer servers that store data and access it online through the internet. The users can remotely upload and store their content and retrieve it whenever they need it.

Businesses around the world are moving away from traditional on-premises services as cloud computing becomes more popular. In recent years, cloud-based services have radically changed the way businesses do business, enabling them to use information technology infrastructures, platforms, software, and applications via the Internet.
Users can devote more time and effort to their main business processes instead of spending their time learning about the resources they need to manage.

5. On-demand self-service. A consumer can unilaterally provision computing capabilities,
such as server time and network storage, as needed automatically without requiring human
interaction with service providers.
Broad network access. Capabilities are available over the network and accessed through
standard mechanisms that promote use by heterogeneous thin or thick client platforms (e.g.,
mobile phones, tablets, laptops, and workstations).
Resource pooling. The provider’s computing resources are pooled to serve multiple
consumers using a multi-tenant model, with different physical and virtual resources
dynamically assigned and reassigned according to consumer demand.
Rapid elasticity. Capabilities can be elastically provisioned and released, in some cases
automatically, to scale rapidly outward and inward commensurate with demand.
Measured service. Cloud systems automatically control and optimize resource use by
leveraging a metering capability at some level of abstraction appropriate to the type of
service (e.g., storage, processing, bandwidth, and active user accounts).

6. Software as a Service (SaaS). The capability provided to the consumer is to use the
provider’s applications running on a cloud infrastructure.The applications are accessible from
various client devices through either a thin client interface, such as a web browser (e.g., web-
based email), or a program interface.
Platform as a Service (PaaS).The capability provided to the consumer is to deploy onto
the cloud infrastructure consumer-created or acquired applications created using
programming languages, libraries, services, and tools supported by the provider.
Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS). The capability provided to the consumer is to
provision processing, storage, networks, and other fundamental computing resources where
the consumer is able to deploy and run arbitrary software, which can include operating
systems and applications.

7. Private cloud. The cloud infrastructure is provisioned for exclusive use by a single
organization comprising multiple consumers (e.g., business units). It may be owned, managed,
and operated by the organization, a third party, or some combination of them, and it may
exist on or off premises.
Community cloud. The cloud infrastructure is provisioned for exclusive use by a specific
community of consumers from organizations that have shared concerns (e.g., mission,
security requirements, policy, and compliance considerations). It may be owned, managed,
and operated by one or more of the organizations in the community, a third party, or some
combination of them, and it may exist on or off premises.
Public cloud. The cloud infrastructure is provisioned for open use by the general public. It
may be owned, managed, and operated by a business, academic, or government organization,
or some combination of them. It exists on the premises of the cloud provider.
Hybrid cloud. The cloud infrastructure is a composition of two or more distinct cloud
infrastructures (private, community, or public) that remain unique entities, but are bound
together by standardized or proprietary technology that enables data and application
portability.
