  8. Our survey from 2016 on how employers value science competence and what knowledge and skills are in demand outlines an overall bright picture of the labour market for scientists. However, there are also some areas of evident concern. Scientists live up to their employers’ expectations. 25 percent of the employers in the survey intend to recruit over the next year thanks to expansion.   9. 57 percent of the employers find it difficult to recruit scientists. Unemployment rate among scientists is high relative to other academic groups, particularly for the growing number of scientists with a foreign degree. 5,9 % AF and SCB for natural science, IT and math, 3 % in general academic degree Our members 1,8 % (1 % academic degree) January 2017
  10. The “right” attitude and general skills are top priorities of the employers, whereas subject knowledge ranks as third. The ability to collaborate and to see the big picture are the general skills that are valued the highest. However the required competence varies depending on labour market sector. Scientists seeking to broaden their competence should primarily focus on communication and IT.

The demand for scientists with a research degree seems to have decreased dramatically in the private sector since 2012 Could have a devastating effect on the possibility to attract young people to a natural science education More RD in public sector and no decrease in the number of scientists within RD (SciLifelab example the transition with collaboration between business and universities)
