40. Why clinical Pharmacy is essential
in Bangladesh
Pharmacy curriculum in Bangladesh do not satisfy the minimal
requirement for appropriate education in clinical, hospital and
community pharmacy, since they are still linked to an old model of
pharmacy activity.
E.g. based on chemistry and basic sciences.
That is present curriculum produces Pharmacist only to work in the
pharmaceutical industry and jobs in this field of work is going to be
saturated.
No university so far have modified their curriculum including topics as
epidemiology,pharmacoeconomics,clinical medicines, community
skills. The later being particularly indicated for community
pharmacists. In future the majority of graduates in pharmacy will work
either in the commuting or the hospital setting to meet the declared
goal of the nation,”HEALTH FOR ALL”.The curricula should reflect this
trend ,including topics of interest and innovation for practicing
pharmacists.
41. Scope of clinical pharmacy in
Bangladesh
There are several types of sector
Drug information
Drug utilization

Others [Drug Testing Laboratories,community
pharmacy,Retail and Chain pharmacy]
42. Status of clinical pharmacy in
Bangladesh
1. Pharmacy education structure in Bangladesh has greater concentration on industrial
pharmacy practice which is obviously a good sign when we have observed
tremendous development in pharmaceutical manufacturing sector.
2. We have to be very careful and serious to ensure that those pharmaceutical products
are storing, administering in proper way at the end user point.
3. Our pharmacy council is not designing the syllabus in such a way that it will facilitate
a pharmacy student to become competent in hospital and clinical sector and future
career in Bangladesh is one of them.
4. Only 2 or 3 tertiary and sophisticated private hospitals in Bangladesh
(LABAID,SQUARE etc) have placed graduate pharmacists to run Pharmacy
Department as Global standard requirement.
5. For now we have quite a good number of Graduate Pharmacist in Bangladesh who
can be placed in hospitals to make sure pharmaceutical services are available.Proper
training is required.
