Some of the greatest environmental challenges in the world today are climate change and resource depletion, both of which could have dire consequences for Africa if not handled innovatively. Africa is considered to be very vulnerable to climate change and the unsustainable depletion of resources. Innovative ways of response are, therefore, urgently needed in order to effectively cope with these challenges.
It cannot be assumed, as so often is done on a project level, that such responses or interventions are merely financial, technical or institutional. Social, institutional, political and cultural support systems in Africa are malfunctioning or under severe stress already, hence a systematic transdisciplinary approach that acknowledges complexity and takes account of the whole system transitioning is needed for effective climate change adaptation and efficient resource use.
The aim of the paper is to further explore the parameters of innovative approaches to climate change adaptation and resource use in African conditions. We present a short outline of the academic literature on complexity, transdisciplinarity and systems approaches and apply these to the fields of climate adaptation and resource use.
Suggested parameters for an integrated conceptual model are formulated. It is argued that innovative approaches to complex issues such as adapting to climate change and improving resource efficiency in Africa would require an integrated, systems and transdisciplinary approach that takes African contexts as a point of departure, and that explicitly include an analysis of human behaviour as a force of change. This integrated approach provides a basis for the development of sustainable innovations for climate change adaptation and resource use in Africa.

Some of the greatest environmental challenges in the world today are climate change and resource depletion, both of which could have dire consequences for Africa if not handled innovatively. Africa is considered to be very vulnerable to climate change and the unsustainable depletion of resources. Innovative ways of response are, therefore, urgently needed in order to effectively cope with these challenges.
It cannot be assumed, as so often is done on a project level, that such responses or interventions are merely financial, technical or institutional. Social, institutional, political and cultural support systems in Africa are malfunctioning or under severe stress already, hence a systematic transdisciplinary approach that acknowledges complexity and takes account of the whole system transitioning is needed for effective climate change adaptation and efficient resource use.
The aim of the paper is to further explore the parameters of innovative approaches to climate change adaptation and resource use in African conditions. We present a short outline of the academic literature on complexity, transdisciplinarity and systems approaches and apply these to the fields of climate adaptation and resource use.
Suggested parameters for an integrated conceptual model are formulated. It is argued that innovative approaches to complex issues such as adapting to climate change and improving resource efficiency in Africa would require an integrated, systems and transdisciplinary approach that takes African contexts as a point of departure, and that explicitly include an analysis of human behaviour as a force of change. This integrated approach provides a basis for the development of sustainable innovations for climate change adaptation and resource use in Africa.

Historical Overview
The roots of biochemistry can be traced back to ancient times when early civilizations observed and documented the effects of various natural substances on living organisms. However, the formal study of biochemistry as a distinct scientific discipline began to emerge in the late 18th and early 19th centuries with significant contributions from chemists and biologists such as Friedrich Wöhler, Justus von Liebig, and Louis Pasteur.
One of the most notable milestones in the history of biochemistry was the discovery of the cell as the fundamental unit of life by Robert Hooke in the 17th century and subsequent elucidation of cellular structures and functions by scientists like Matthias Schleiden, Theodor Schwann, and Rudolf Virchow. These foundational discoveries laid the groundwork for the modern understanding of biological processes at the molecular level.
The advent of spectroscopic techniques in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, including UV-visible spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, revolutionized the field of biochemistry by enabling researchers to analyze the structures of biomolecules and study their interactions with unprecedented detail. Additionally, the development of X-ray crystallography by pioneers such as William Henry Bragg and William Lawrence Bragg allowed scientists to determine the three-dimensional structures of proteins and nucleic acids, further advancing our understanding of their functions.
Fundamental Principles of Biochemistry
At its core, biochemistry is governed by several fundamental principles that define the behavior of biomolecules and their interactions within biological systems. These principles include:
Structure-Function Relationship: The structure of a biomolecule dictates its function. For example, the precise arrangement of amino acids in a protein determines its catalytic activity, substrate specificity, and binding affinity for ligands.
Chemical Equilibrium: Many biochemical reactions reach a state of equilibrium, where the rates of the forward and reverse reactions are equal. The equilibrium constant (K_eq) quantifies the relative concentrations of reactants and products at equilibrium and is influenced by factors such as temperature and pressure.

26. Climate Change: Deregulation, Energy Dominance, and the Trump Administration
I make the case that the Trump Administration lacks a climate change platform (other than ignoring, denying, or downplaying its importance). I then argue that this is because climate change has no place in its story about the American way of life. We look at this story with a focus on the central pillars of deregulation and energy dominance, where 'energy' means fossil fuels. Finally, we discuss how this is not ecomodernism.
24. Climate Change: Electrify Everything
We look at the idea of widescale electrification of the economy as a major climate policy framework and solution. We put this in the context of the Standards, Investments, and Justice "new consensus" on climate policy.
23. Climate Change: Carbon Pricing and Beyond
We look at a new Renaissance in climate policy among the US left - a shift from making carbon more expensive to making green energy cheaper. This is a shift from narrow pricing tactics to an overarching industrial policy.

We explore the origins, content, and implications of the US Green New Deal as an overarching framework for climate policy
21. Climate Change: The Paris Climate Agreement
The document discusses the history and key elements of the Paris Climate Agreement. It outlines that the UNFCCC was formed in 1992 to stabilize greenhouse gas emissions and avoid dangerous climate change. Major milestones include the 1997 Kyoto Protocol and 2015 Paris Agreement, where countries agreed to limit warming to 1.5-2°C. The Paris Agreement established long-term temperature goals, national emissions reduction plans, frameworks for finance/support, and transparency measures, but current country pledges are still insufficient to meet its targets. In 2019, the US withdrew from the agreement.

In this lecture, we survey the main kinds of climate policy options and then discuss how we might go about selecting the best ones. This is a general introduction to climate policies, which will be explored in more details in the following lectures.

This document examines climate change from an economics perspective and discusses different views on capitalism and climate change. It outlines that something started happening around 400 years ago with the rise of capitalism, growing productivity, and consumption. However, a finite planet may not be able to sustain an economic system premised on endless growth. Some argue radical systemic change is needed, while others believe issues can be addressed by fixing externalities like putting a price on carbon emissions. The document also discusses John Locke's views on property and the environment.

We jump from a doomsday worldview to a more optimistic one by exploring the up-wing or ecomodernist perspective on climate change.

In this talk we first step into a doomsday worldview about climate change and make the case for that perspective. Then we step outside of that perspective to reflect on worldviews and climate change.
16. Climate Change: Media, climate, and cancel culture
In this lecture, we look at the balancing act between rights-defending and truth-telling when it comes to media representation of views about climate change.
15. Climate Change: Climate politics as propaganda
Here we wrap up our third theory of climate politics, which emphasizes the role of powerful and rich interests groups (the carbon industrial complex). We use "Merchants of Doubt" and other resources to develop a certain Realpolitik of climate change.
14. Climate Change: Climate politics as paradox
This lecture examines another theory about the persistence of controversies in climate politics, despite growing scientific research. We develop a theory, evaluate it, and compare it to other ways of picturing the politics of climate change.
13. Climate Change: Climate politics as applied science
This lecture is the first of three to theorize climate politics. Here, we look at the theory of politics as applied science or the "linear model." We explore the history of this theory and evaluate its merits.
