➔ Climate change refers to long-term shifts in
temperatures and weather patterns. These
shifts may be natural, but since the 1800s,
human activities have been the main driver of
climate change, primarily due to the burning of
fossil fuels (like coal, oil, and gas), which
produces heat-trapping gases.

According to the 2020 Global
Climate Report from NOAA National
Centers for Environmental
Information, every month of 2020
except December was in the top four
warmest on record for that month. In
December, the presence of a
moderately strong La Niña event
cooled the tropical Pacific Ocean and
dampened the global average
warmth. The month turned out as
"only" the eighth warmest December
on record.

In a 2020 study in the
journal Science, for example,
researchers observed how
human-caused climate
change is contributing to the
21st-century megadrought in
the Western U.S. and
northern Mexico by
evaluating trends in modeled
temperature, relative
humidity, and precipitation
data between 1901 and 2018.
According to the study’s
findings, human-caused
warming accounts for 46% of
this drought’s severity.

7. A warming, rising ocean
Not enough food
Sea-level rise is a major effect of climate change.
It has drawn international attention, because
higher sea levels in the future would cause
serious impacts in various parts of the world.
There are questions associated with sea-level rise
which science needs to answer. To what extent
did climate change contribute to sea-level rise in
the past? How much will global mean sea level
increase in the future? How serious are the
impacts of the anticipated sea-level rise likely to
be, and can human society respond to them? This
paper aims to answer these questions through a
comprehensive review of the relevant literature.
First, the present status of observed sea-level rise,
analyses of its causes, and future projections are
summarized. Then the impacts are examined
along with other consequences of climate
change, from both global and Japanese
perspectives. Finally, responses to adverse
impacts will be discussed in order to clarify the
implications of the sea-level rise issue for human
society.

8. Multiple factors determine the incidence
of climate-sensitive infectious diseases
such as malaria, dengue fever, Lyme
disease, West Nile virus, and diarrheal
diseases. Environmental factors such as
land use and climate change–related
impacts on ecosystems can create,
increase, or decrease suitable habitats for
vectors, possibly leading to the geographic
spread or contraction of associated
diseases.Trade, travel, and other
socioeconomic changes also can facilitate
emerging or reemerging infectious
diseases, in part through introduction
from other regions. As the COVID-19
crisis illustrates, proactive investments in
health systems are critical to ensuring
preparedness and surge capacity when
diseases emerge.

11. Conclusion
Our ‘climate’ is the long-term weather that our planet normally experiences.
Humans, animals, plants, and other living beings need a very specific climate in order to live.
Since the Industrial Revolution in the 1800s, our planet has been heating up at a much quicker
rate than ever before – with damaging consequences.
We’ve been burning fossil fuels such as coal and gas to provide electricity, heating and transport,
but this releases carbon dioxide, methane and other gases into the atmosphere. They hang in the
air like an invisible blanket, trapping the heat from the sun and stopping it from returning to space,
warming up the Earth’s surface temperature.
As a result, we’re seeing extreme weather, from floods to droughts, across the globe. It’s also
causing glaciers and ice caps to melt, making sea levels rise.
While we can’t reverse the damage, we can make changes to slow things down, reduce our impact here
on Earth and create a more sustainable future.
