refers to efforts by society or ecosystems to
prepare for or adjust to future climate change
These adjustment are:
 Protective
 Opportunistic
It is the process of confronting risk, preparing
for them and coping with its adverse effects
 In effectively managing risk, opportunities
are unleashed
 Climate change is forever
 Global threat multiplier
 Affect humans and biodiversity
 Capable of rolling back decades of
development and economic advancement
 Loss of live and livelihoods
 Uncertainties in future climate variability
 expands vulnerability

 Poor awareness
 Lack of information
 Uncertainty in climate variability
 Lack of political will
 Insufficient financial resources
 Immediate and visible cost of managing

Climate Change Adaptation: A Risk Management

Editor's Notes

  • #3 Adaptation is not new but current rate of global climate change is unusually high compared to past changes. Adaptation is protective in nature in the form risk reduction and opportunistic by taking advantages of the positives climate change like growing crops in areas that are thought not to grow such crops.
  • #4 This goes to show that climate change adaptation is a risk management approach to climate change and variability. There are three ways to prepare for risk management and these includes Knowledge acquisition and sharing, protection (such as flood defence systems) and insurance (such as health insurance and community cohesion)
  • #5 Even if the global community do the impossible which to is stop all emissions, the existing carbon in the atmosphere is forever and its influence last for centuries, therefore climate change is forever. Climate change is a global threat muliplier
  • #6 Climate variability and change expands vulnerability status of people and ecosystems. The IPCC 2007 fourth assessment report describes vulnerability to climate change as being determined by three factors: exposure to hazards (such as increase drought), sensitivity to those hazards (such as an economy dominated by rain-fed agriculture), and the capacity to adapt to those hazards (such as information in climate variability or money to buy flood insurance)
  • #9 Climate change adaptation means being able to live and cope with the adverse effects of climate change while harnessing the benefits therein.
