ClickHouse Data Warehouse 101: The First Billion Rows, by Alexander Zaitsev a...Altinity Ltd
Columnar stores like ClickHouse enable users to pull insights from big data in seconds, but only if you set things up correctly. This talk will walk through how to implement a data warehouse that contains 1.3 billion rows using the famous NY Yellow Cab ride data. We'll start with basic data implementation including clustering and table definitions, then show how to load efficiently. Next, we'll discuss important features like dictionaries and materialized views, and how they improve query efficiency. We'll end by demonstrating typical queries to illustrate the kind of inferences you can draw rapidly from a well-designed data warehouse. It should be enough to get you started--the next billion rows is up to you!

AWS Athena vs. Google BigQuery for interactive SQL QueriesDoiT International
During the re:Invent 2016, AWS has released the Amazon Athena - an interactive query service that makes it easy to analyze data in Amazon S3 using standard SQL. Athena is serverless, so there is no infrastructure to manage, and you pay only for the queries that you run.
We took a look on AWS Athena and compared it to the Google BigQuery - another player of serverless interactive data analysis.
Would you like to know which one is the right tool for you? Join us for this meetup to learn AWS Athena and for the test drive of querying exactly the same dataset using AWS Athena and Google BigQuery to see where each one shines (or totally blows it).

Solving enterprise challenges through scale out storage & big compute finalAvere Systems
Google Cloud Platform, Avere Systems, and Cycle Computing experts will share best practices for advancing solutions to big challenges faced by enterprises with growing compute and storage needs. In this “best practices” webinar, you’ll hear how these companies are working to improve results that drive businesses forward through scalability, performance, and ease of management.
The slides were from a webinar presented January 24, 2017. The audience learned:
- How enterprises are using Google Cloud Platform to gain compute and storage capacity on-demand
- Best practices for efficient use of cloud compute and storage resources
- Overcoming the need for file systems within a hybrid cloud environment
- Understand how to eliminate latency between cloud and data center architectures
- Learn how to best manage simulation, analytics, and big data workloads in dynamic environments
- Look at market dynamics drawing companies to new storage models over the next several years
Presenters communicated a foundation to build infrastructure to support ongoing demand growth.
Amazon on Amazon: How Amazon Designs Chips on AWS (MFG305) - AWS re:Invent 2018Amazon Web Services
AWS global infrastructure continues to innovate and scale. To sustain innovation and growth, Amazon uses AWS to design the next generation of cloud infrastructure. Accelerating the RTL to GDSII workflow, Amazon uses AWS for semiconductor design and Electronic Design Automation (EDA) tools. In this session, we discuss the infrastructure and architectures that our own silicon teams use to design the next generation of cloud computing infrastructure. From switch technology to specialized hardware, the immense capacity, elasticity, and agility that AWS provides is powered by Amazon processors. Through partnerships and collaborations with many EDA vendors and semiconductor customers, Amazon continues to quickly advance technology at an unprecedented pace.
Google take on heterogeneous data base replication Svetlin Stanchev
Datastream from Google is a serverless change data capture and replication service. Cloud Migration Paths: Kubernetes, IaaS, or DBaaSEDB
Moving to the cloud is hard, and moving Postgres databases to the cloud is even harder. Public cloud or private cloud? Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), or Platform as a Service (PaaS)? Kubernetes for the application, or for the database and the application? This talk will juxtapose self-managed Kubernetes and container-based database solutions, Postgres deployments on IaaS, and Postgres DBaaS solutions of which EDB’s DBaaS BigAnimal is the latest example.

Extended deck from the 2019 GLOC event in Cleveland. Discusses what a DWaaS is, the top 10 features of Snowflake that represent that, and a check list for what questions to ask when choosing a cloud based data warehouse.
Enterprises have been using both Big Data and Cloud Computing technologies for years. Until recently, the two have not been combined. Now the agility and efficiency benefits of self-service elastic infrastructure are being extended to Big Data initiatives – whether on-premises or in the public cloud.
This session at Hadoop Summit in San Jose, California (June 2016) discusses the emerging category of Big-Data-as-a-Service (BDaaS) - representing the intersection of Big Data and Cloud Computing.
In this session, Kris Applegate (Cloud and Big Data Solution Architect at Dell) and Thomas Phelan (Co-Founder and Chief Architect at BlueData) outlined the following:
- Innovations that paved the way for Big-Data-as-a-Service
- Definition and categories of Big-Data-as-a-Service
- Key considerations for Big-Data-as-a-Service in the enterprise, including public cloud or on-premises deployment options

I have heard many times that architecture is not important for the front-end. Also, many times I have seen how developers implement features on the front-end just following the standard rules for a framework and think that this is enough to successfully launch the project, and then the project fails. How to prevent this and what approach to choose? I have launched dozens of complex projects and during the talk we will analyze which approaches have worked for me and which have not.

Do you want to learn how to model and simulate an electrical network from scratch in under an hour?
Then welcome to this PowSyBl workshop, hosted by Rte, the French Transmission System Operator (TSO)!
During the webinar, you will discover the PowSyBl ecosystem as well as handle and study an electrical network through an interactive Python notebook.
PowSyBl is an open source project hosted by LF Energy, which offers a comprehensive set of features for electrical grid modelling and simulation. Among other advanced features, PowSyBl provides:
- A fully editable and extendable library for grid component modelling;
- Visualization tools to display your network;
- Grid simulation tools, such as power flows, security analyses (with or without remedial actions) and sensitivity analyses;
The framework is mostly written in Java, with a Python binding so that Python developers can access PowSyBl functionalities as well.
What you will learn during the webinar:
- For beginners: discover PowSyBl's functionalities through a quick general presentation and the notebook, without needing any expert coding skills;
- For advanced developers: master the skills to efficiently apply PowSyBl functionalities to your real-world scenarios.
Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.
