Difference between
noun & adjective 4
Difference between adjective & noun clause
1. Like an adjective, an
adjective clause modifies
a noun or pronoun,
answering questions such
as which? or what kind
of?
For example:
Write down the names of the
people who are in your group.
This adjective clause modifies
the noun“people.”
1. Noun clauses are not
modifiers, so they are not
subordinators like adjectives
and adverbs, and they cannot
stand alone. They must
function within another
sentence pattern, always as
nouns.
For example:
I think that grandparents should help
more in raising their grandchildren.
This noun clause is the object of the
verb “think.”

Difference between adjective & noun clause
2. Most adjective clauses begin
with "who," "whom," "which,"
or "that.“. Sometimes the
relative pronoun (that's) is
omitted.
Occasionally, an adjective
clause is introduced by a
relative adverb, usually
"when,""where,"or"why.“
Example:
Thebook that is on the floor should be
returnedtothelibrary.
Homeistheplacewhereyourelax.
2. A noun clause usually begins
with a relative pronoun like
"that," "which," "who,"
"whoever," "whomever,"
"whose," "what," and
"whatsoever." It can also begin
with the subordinating
conjunctions "how," "when,"
"where,""whether,"and"why.“
Example:
Whoever wins the game will play in the
tournament.
Weraisewhateverweneed.

Difference between adjective & noun clause
3. An adjective clause
must always appears
immediately following
the noun or pronoun. It
never comes at the very
beginning of a sentence.
4. An adjective clause
can be omitted from a
sentence and still have a
grammatically correct
sentence.
3. A noun clause can be
the subject or object of a
verb, a subject, subject
complement, direct
object, or object of a
preposition.
4. The noun clause
cannot be similarly
omitted.

Tips to detect noun & adjective clause
1. An adjective clause nearly always appears
immediately following the noun or pronoun
answering questions such as which? or what
kind of?
2. If the clause follows a verb, you know that it’s a
noun clause and not an adjective clause.
3. If you see a sentence start with
who/what/when/how/where/whether and it’s
an indirect question— then it’s a noun clause.

Difference between
noun & adjective 9
Examples
Noun clauses.
1. I wonder when
the final exam
is going to be.
2. I wonder where
the teacher
comes from.
3. I wonder where
the teacher is.
Adjective clauses.
1. I will see you on Monday,
when we will do another
activity based on Exercise 5.
2. Later I will show you
pictures of the town where
I am from.
3. I come from a town that is
about two hours west of
Boston.

I went back to the Devon School not long ago, and found it looking
oddlynewerthanwhenIwasastudenttherefifteenyearsbefore.It
seemed more sedate than I remembered it, more perpendicular
and straight-laced, with narrower windows and shinier woodwork,
as though a coat of varnish had been put over everything for better
preservation. But, of course, fifteen years before there had been a
wargoingon....
I didn’t entirely like this glossy new surface, because it made the
schoollooklikeamuseum,andthat’sexactlywhatitwastome,and
what I did not want it to be. In the deep, tacit way in which feeling
becomes stronger than thought, I had always felt that the Devon
School came into existence the day I entered it, was vibrantly real
while I was a student there, and then blinked out like a candle the
dayIleft.

Noun clauses are not modifiers, so they are not subordinators like adjectives and adverbs, and they cannot stand alone. They must function within another sentence pattern, always as nouns. But, of course, fifteen years before there had been a wargoingon.... I didn’t entirely like this glossy new surface, because it made the schoollooklikeamuseum, andthat’sexactlywhatitwastome, and what I did not want it to be.
