group of words that contains a
subject and a verb and
expresses a complete thought.
It can stand alone as a
sentence by itself.

1. Have a subject and a predicate
2. Can stand alone as fully functioning
sentence
3. When standing alone, an independent
clause is ALWAYS a simple sentence
