was established by the National Science Foundation
in direct response
to the concern about shortages of
information technology workers in the United States

H-1B is a non-immigrant visa category
Allows American companies and universities
to seek temporary help from skilled foreigners
who have the equivalent US Bachelor’s Degree education
H-1B employees are employed temporarily in a job
category that is considered by the US Citizenship &Immigration
Services to be a "specialty occupation”
Microsoft,IBM,Oracle Corporation, Cisco,
Intel, QualComm, Yahoo, Hewlett Packard, and Google
$5,000/year for 65,000 not including non-profit universities

ITSI Sites
• 126 hours of lab-based, credit-bearing
activities for 90 teachers
• Full support for classroom implementation,
using models and sensors

Inquiry through
Models and Probes
Models:
Computer models can simulate situations that are hard to
see (molecular motion) or hard to understand (complex
systems). They allow students to study and manipulate
phenomena that are otherwise inaccessible. Students
can also modify the models and experiment with
different rules and starting conditions. They learn
programming and technology skills and science content
at the same time.
Probes:
Using sensors attached to real-time graphs, students can
do real experiments and take vivid and compelling
measurements. This encourages active engagement in
science and exploration of the natural world. Students
also learn the technology underlying the sensors and
how they collect and display information.

As of February 2009…
• 68 teachers with 3,500 students have run
6,760 activities, or almost two activities
per student.
• Anticipate that all 90 teachers will use the
activities since 6,254 students have been
registered.

Currently about 1,000 activity titles in the ITSI
database.
• Curriculum developers at the Concord
Consortium created 180
• Teachers created an additional 377
• Teachers customized 277 activities made at
Concord Consortium
• Teachers customized 188 activities made by
other teachers
60 activities were partly or completely original,
having new objectives or inquiry tasks.

ITSI District Site
How many times does a science teacher try
implementing a new technology, then goes back
to their old way of instructing because they don't
feel competent to use the new technology or
confident that the technology will work? With
ITSI, every participating teacher has
successfully implemented lessons they have
written that use probes and models…100%.

  • 7. 9/25/2021 Slide 7 Inquiry through Models and Probes Models: Computer models can simulate situations that are hard to see (molecular motion) or hard to understand (complex systems). They allow students to study and manipulate phenomena that are otherwise inaccessible. Students can also modify the models and experiment with different rules and starting conditions. They learn programming and technology skills and science content at the same time. Probes: Using sensors attached to real-time graphs, students can do real experiments and take vivid and compelling measurements. This encourages active engagement in science and exploration of the natural world. Students also learn the technology underlying the sensors and how they collect and display information.

  • 13. 9/25/2021 Slide 13 ITSI Dissemination As of February 2009… • 68 teachers with 3,500 students have run 6,760 activities, or almost two activities per student. • Anticipate that all 90 teachers will use the activities since 6,254 students have been registered.
  • 14. 9/25/2021 Slide 14 ITSI Customization Currently about 1,000 activity titles in the ITSI database. • Curriculum developers at the Concord Consortium created 180 • Teachers created an additional 377 • Teachers customized 277 activities made at Concord Consortium • Teachers customized 188 activities made by other teachers 60 activities were partly or completely original, having new objectives or inquiry tasks.
  • 15. 9/25/2021 Slide 15 ITSI District Site How many times does a science teacher try implementing a new technology, then goes back to their old way of instructing because they don't feel competent to use the new technology or confident that the technology will work?
