Generations

• Broadwell is the fifth
generation of the Intel Core
Processor. It is Intel's
codename for the 14
nanometer die shrink of
its Haswell microarchitecture. It
is a "tick" in Intel's tick–
tock principle as the next step
in semiconductor
fabrication.[2][3][4] Like some of
the previous tick-tock
iterations, Broadwell did not
completely replace the full
range of CPUs from the
previous microarchitecture (Ha
swell), as there were no low-
end desktop CPUs based on
Broadwell.[5]
Nehalam
• Nehalem is
the codename for Intel's 45
nm microarchitecture released
in November 2008.[2] It was
used in the first-generation of
the Intel
Core i5 and i7 processors,
and succeeds the older Core
microarchitecture used
on Core 2 processors.[3] The
term "Nehalem" comes from
the Nehalem River.[
Sandy Bridge
• Sandy Bridge is
the codename for Intel's 32
nm microarchitecture used in
the second generation of
the Intel Core
processors (Core i7, i5, i3).
The Sandy Bridge
microarchitecture is the
successor
to Nehalem and Westmere
microarchitecture. Intel
demonstrated a Sandy Bridge
processor in 2009, and
released first products based
on the architecture in January
2011 under the Core brand.[2][3]
Ivy Bridge
• Ivy Bridge is
the codename for Intel's 22
nm microarchitecture used in
the third generation of the Intel
Core processors (Core
i7, i5, i3). Ivy Bridge is a die
shrink to 22 nm process based
on FinFET ("3D") Tri-Gate
transistors, from the former
generation's 32
nm Sandy Bridge microarchite
cture—also known as tick–tock
model. The name is also
applied more broadly to
the Xeon and Core i7 Ivy
Bridge-E series of processors
released in 2013.
Haswell
• Haswell is
the codename for
a processor microarchitec
ture developed by Intel as
the "fourth-generation
core" successor to the Ivy
Bridge (which is a die
shrink/tick of the Sandy
Bridge
microarchitecture).[1] Intel
officially
announced CPUs based
on this
Sky Lake
• Skylake[6][7] is the codename used by Intel for a
processor microarchitecture that was launched
in August 2015[8] succeeding
the Broadwell microarchitecture.[9] Skylake is a
microarchitecture redesign using the
same 14 nm manufacturing process
technology[10] as its predecessor, serving as a
tock in Intel's tick–tock manufacturing and
design model. According to Intel, the redesign
brings greater CPU and GPU performance and
reduced power consumption. Skylake CPUs
share their microarchitecture with Kaby
Lake, Coffee Lake, Cannon Lake, Whiskey
Lake, and Comet Lake CPUs.
• Skylake is the last Intel platform on which
Windows earlier than Windows 10 will be
officially supported by Microsoft,[11] although
enthusiast-created modifications exist that
allow Windows 8.1 and earlier to continue to
receive Windows Updates on later
platforms.[12][13][14]
• Some of the processors based on the Skylake
microarchitecture are marketed as 6th-
generation Core.[15][16][17]
Kaby Lake
• Kaby Lake is Intel's codename for its
seventh
generation Core microprocessor family
announced on August 30, 2016.[7] Like
the preceding Skylake, Kaby Lake is
produced using a 14
nanometer manufacturing process
technology.[8] Breaking with Intel's
previous "tick–tock" manufacturing and
design model, Kaby Lake represents
the optimized step of the
newer process–architecture–
optimization model.[9] Kaby Lake
began shipping to manufacturers
and OEMs in the second quarter of
2016,[10][11] and mobile chips have
started shipping while Kaby Lake
(desktop) chips were officially
launched in January 2017.
Coffee Lake
• Coffee
Lake is Intel's codename for
its eighth
generation Core microproce
ssor family, announced on
September 25, 2017.[5] It is
manufactured using Intel's
second 14 nm process
node refinement.[6] Desktop
Coffee Lake processors
introduced i5 and i7 CPUs
featuring six cores (along
with hyper-threading in the
case of the latter) and Core
i3 CPUs with four cores and
no hyperthreading.
Cannon Lake
• Cannon
Lake (formerly Skymont)
is Intel's codename for the 10-
nanometer die shrink of
the Kaby
Lake microarchitecture. As a
die shrink, Cannon Lake is a
new process in Intel's process-
architecture-
optimization execution plan as
the next step in semiconductor
fabrication.[2] Cannon Lake
CPUs are the first mainstream
CPUs to include the AVX-
512 instruction set.
Tiger Lake
• Tiger Lake is Intel's codename
for the 11th generation Intel
Core mobile processors based
on the new Willow Cove Core
microarchitecture,
manufactured using Intel's
third-generation 10 nm
process node known as 10SF
("10 nm SuperFin"). Tiger Lake
replaces the Ice Lake family of
mobile processors,[3]
representing an Optimization
step in Intel's process–
architecture–optimization
model.
Alder Lake
• Alder Lake is Intel's codename for the
12th generation of Intel Core processors
based on a hybrid architecture utilizing
Golden Cove high-performance cores and
Gracemont power-efficient cores.[2][3] It
is fabricated using Intel's Intel 7 process,
previously referred to as Intel 10 nm
Enhanced SuperFin (10ESF).[4][5][6] The
10ESF has a 10%-15% boost in
performance over the 10SF used in the
mobile Tiger Lake processors. Intel
officially announced 12th Gen Intel Core
CPUs on October 27, 2021.[7] Intel
officially announced 12th Gen Intel Core
mobile CPUs and non-K series desktop
CPUs on January 4, 2022.[8] Intel
officially announced the launch of Alder
Lake-P and -U series on February 23,
2022,[9] and Alder Lake-HX series on
May 10, 2022.[10]

According to Intel, the redesign brings greater CPU and GPU performance and reduced power consumption. Skylake CPUs share their microarchitecture with Kaby Lake, Coffee Lake, Cannon Lake, Whiskey Lake, and Comet Lake CPUs. • Skylake is the last Intel platform on which Windows earlier than Windows 10 will be officially supported by Microsoft,[11] although enthusiast-created modifications exist that allow Windows 8.1 and earlier to continue to receive Windows Updates on later platforms.[12][13][14] • Some of the processors based on the Skylake microarchitecture are marketed as 6th- generation Core.[15][16][17]

Kaby Lake • Kaby Lake is Intel's codename for its seventh generation Core microprocessor family announced on August 30, 2016.[7] Like the preceding Skylake, Kaby Lake is produced using a 14 nanometer manufacturing process technology.[8] Breaking with Intel's previous "tick–tock" manufacturing and design model, Kaby Lake represents the optimized step of the newer process–architecture– optimization model.[9] Kaby Lake began shipping to manufacturers and OEMs in the second quarter of 2016,[10][11] and mobile chips have started shipping while Kaby Lake (desktop) chips were officially launched in January 2017.
