11. President Clinton is acquitted by the U. S. Senate of impeachment charges relating to the sex and perjury scandal involving Monica Lewinsky.

12. September 8, 1999 Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban , the third book in J.K. Rowling 's hugely popular Harry Potter series, is published in the United States.

14. School Shooting April 20, 1999 Two student gunmen at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado, kill 14 students and one teacher, injuring about 30 others before committing suicide.
