2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.
Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

1. Napa Valley Wine Essay
In the Napa Valley winemaking is a pivotal part of life. Many people work in the wine industry
and the Napa Valley wouldn't be even close to as thriving as it is without it. When people that
don't live here, think of Napa, they think wine. Yet most people, if at all like me, have no idea how
the simple process of turning grapes into an alcoholic beverage works or where it came from. The
concept of making wine sounds very strange, you let grape juice sit for a long time until it has
enough bacteria decompose it and it becomes alcoholic. Wine dates back to far further than Napa
has existed and arguably has had a massive impact on the history of civilization making appearances
in The Bible and many other places.
It must be said that wine was...show more content...
Wine was actually one of the first things to be cultivated in America by European settlers and is
seen on the maps of early American colonies dating back to 1585 (Pinney 6). Wine eventually
made its way to California with Catholic Missionaries in the 1780s. Fray Junipero Serra established
Catholic missions all along the coast of California all the way up to what is present day Sonoma
(Pinney 238). The optimal climate in California made wine making a very productive and profitable
business and is still cultivated today throughout the state. Aside from American Prohibition from
1920 to 1933 when the consumption of alcohol was criminalized, California has produced
world–class wines throughout the 20th and 21st centuries (LaMar).
There is no doubt that wine has played a pivotal role in the development of the modern world, all
the way back to when civilization was born in the Fertile Crescent around 6,000 B.C.E.. It remains
a crucial part of daily life in the lives of many all over the world from religious to recreational
purposes. Viticulture also has one of the most interesting and unique histories of any beverage or
food. So next time you see a bottle of wine, or vineyard remember that it has contributed much more
to the world than meets the

2. The Five Types Of Claims
1– The five types of claims include: claims of fact, claims of definition, claims of clause, claims of
value, and claims of policy. 2– Claims of fact: Did it happen? Does it Exist? Claims of definition:
What is it? How should we define it? Claims of cause: What caused it? How should we define it?
Claims of value: Is it good or bad? What criteria will help us decide? Claims of policy: What should
we do about it? What should be our future course of action? 3– The first arguments made in response
to a new issue–generating situation usually involve claims of fact and definition. The next group of
arguments that occur often result in claims of cause. Next, claims of value occur when people begin
to evaluate the goodness or badness of what has...show more content...
This policy forces any student who received a zero on an assignment to attend tutoring for thirty
minutes every day until the grade changes. One issue that has risen due this policy is the inability
of certain students to attend the tutoring, and as a result being punished for it. The two primary
types of claims that have been made are, claims of value and policy. Teachers and principals had
to decide whether or not it was good or bad that students were suffering as a result of not being
able to attend the tutoring. They then had to decide how they were going to fix the problem, and
what their future course of action could be. An event that has occurred on the national level is
the decision of Donald Trump to build a wall on the border of Mexico. The issue that has risen is
whether or not the wall is in the best interest of the country. Claims of definition, cause, value, and
policy have been made. People are making different claims of definition about what exactly the
wall will look like and the scale at which it will be built. People are also making different claims of
cause about why we need the wall or why we don't need the wall. Deciding whether the wall is
good or bad has also been a major claim in this issue. Lastly, claims of policy about how to find the
best solution to the problem have been stated as

3. Example Of Claim Analysis
6F
A.) Claim: Voters beliefs are quick to believe things that are untrue. Evidence to support the claim:
The National Survey of Public Knowledge of Welfare Reform and the Federal Budget finds, for
example, that 41% of Americans believe that foreign aid is one of the two biggest areas in the
federal budget – versus 14% for Social Security.
Strength of evidence: The creditability of this source is very good because it is actually from a
national survey. Although the strength of it is not all that relevant to the claim, it really just needs
more information of the whole survey. It needs to say what is actually is the biggest area in federal
budget. Although the statistics are correct they would need to present more, the two together is only
45% of society. That would mean 55% of information is missing.
B.)Claim: Psychologist bases their studies on a narrow and atypical group of humanity. Evidence to

The evidence actually shows which groups psychologist study, which are modern industrial societies.
The percentages are used appropriately. At first when reading the article I interpreted it wrongly but
after going back and rereading I found out what the author was explaining the author could be clearer
on the claim. None of the information is missing.
6A Problem: An issue that I feel very strongly about is obesity. Solution: Educate the population
about foods that are bad for you and certain ways to lose weight. Thesis statement: In the United
States obesity has become an issue. Because of the foods that Americans consume in our bodies.
Because of the poverty levels and not being able to pay for healthy foods instead of fast food.
Because the population is not educated on what's good and what's bad for them. Because the
amount of food we consume. Because of the lack of exercise leads to weight

4. Felons And The Right To Vote
In the article, "Felons and the Right to Vote," claims of fact, value, and policy are used. The author's
first claim sets the subject for the rest of the piece, "Denying the vote to ex–offenders is
antidemocratic, and undermines the nation's commitment to rehabilitating people who have paid
their debt to society." This is a claim of value, stating that not allowing ex–offenders to vote is
against the philosophy of our democratic government and dismisses the time they have served for
their crimes. This is a claim of value because the evidence used, later on, argues that the current
actions of the government relating to the suffrage of ex–felons, is morally wrong. The speaker
challenges the audience to think about right vs. wrong, good vs. bad.

5. Essay On Fact Checks
The fact checks have provided a unique opportunity to think critically about what candidates say
and to check if they are telling the truth. The fact checks also made me aware of what claims can
actually be checked and the important things to look for when checking a claim. Even if I do not
write another fact check in my life, I can still go through the process in my head whenever I hear a
claim, and that is more than most people can do. The community based follow ups were important
for putting the fact checks into context, but they mostly turned into data visualizations instead of
conversations with affected community members. This was fine and made the burden of
community follow ups much easier, but in the future if you want to see the full impact of the fact
check, make it mandatory to interview at least one person who feels the effects of the fact check.
Fact checking never stops since politicians continue to need to be held accountable, but people seem
to care a little bit less about the checks when there is no election coming up. That being said, I would

Once we were able to meet, however, the fact checks went smoothly and working with Cara was
really easy. In the future, I would recommend that students know the extent of the follow–ups and
are aware of the sources they should have on hand. I had most of my sources ready and my fact
checks did not take that long. Had I not come prepared, two hours for six pieces could have easily
turned into six hours. If deadlines were a bit more heavily enforced, then I would know exactly
what to work on and when it had to be done by. Yes, there are different factors at play such as
revising the fact checks and then following up, but if that whole process was contained to about a
week for each assignment, they may be finished and published

6. Freestanding Claim
In determining the differences between a freestanding and gateway claim of actual innocence in
habeas review, I will identify several factors that go into the courts procedures and verdict in
deciding if the convicted petitioner is entitled to habeas relief. Some of these factors include the
nature in which the petitioner is questioning their conviction, such as a constitutional error or new
evidence surfacing. From that, I will explain how the court decides the standard of review in
determining if the petitioner should be granted relief. Finally, I will explain which one of the two
has a much higher chance of successfully being granted habeas relief. First, I will distinguish the
differences between a gateway claim of innocence and a freestanding claim of actual innocence. A
gateway claim of actual innocence is centered on the constitutionality of the trial, that's to say was
there an error that resulted in the conviction of the defendant. This could be an incompetent attorney
who represented him in the trial that failed to prove the defendant's innocence in the criminal act. It
could also be based on the prosecutions side of the...show more content...
A freestanding claim of actual innocence has never been recognized as a way of obtaining habeas
relief, but that being said in theory it is not impossible to achieve. A freestanding claim of actual
innocence would need to have a colossal amount of new evidence that would indeed shock the
conscious of the court room if the petitioner were to continue being incarcerated or in the case of
Herrera, be executed. The evidence would have to point in the direction of the petitioner being in
fact innocent, that a reasonable juror would acquit them of the crime. The evidence would need to
be bulletproof physical facts, beyond hearsay that was not available at the time of the original trial.
Which brings us to the decision of judges in the habeas review

7. Examples Of Factual Claim
An example of a factual claim found in the film, was on the crime scene in which the detective
shot a guy in the blue Mercedes. The detective claim that he was driving and cut the blue
Mercedes off and the driver got mad and started to pulled up beside him waving a gun. However, he
said he tried to leave but the guy fired a shot and he shot back in self–defense. Then when he opened
the door the driver fell out dead. The interpretive claim to go along with it is, when detective
Graham (Don Cheadle) asked the officer at the scene were there any witness that could prove the
story of the detective. She said no, so he asked her to see can she can find witnesses as the course of
action to described the event in the factual claim.
