        (Shaviv, 2005)
    
        has semi-permeable coating (AAPFCO, 2007)
Introduction

Effects of chemical fertilizers on plants:
    
Protein and carbohydrate content increased in
        Stevia rebaudiana induced with conventional
        fertilizer (Patil, 2010).

    
        Vegetative growth of Cryptostegia grandiflora
        developed well in slow-release fertilizer
        treatment (Hussein, 2009).

Isolated plant growth hormone (Cohen & Paleg,
        1967; Tulis, 1964)
    
Promotes growth and elongation of cells but
different concentrations have relative effects to
various plant species (Sakr et al., 2003)

combined with different amounts of GA3 on
    growth and chemical composition of

Editor's Notes

  1. With the increase demand of food, medicines and other plant derived products, plant culturists are constantly looking for various ways to as well increase plant productivity. Chemical fertilizers have been the more efficient and more productive means in growing crops. These varies from liquid forms or powdered ones that may be dissolved or directly induced. The different variations of fertilizers and plant enhancers support the fact that different types of plants have relative nutrient needs.
  2. In accordance to basic nutrient needs of plants, the main components of fertilizers are nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium. Conventional and the slow-release are the two most common chemical fertilizer. The conventional one is the common inorganic commercial fertilizer where there is a lower concentration of nutrients. The slow-release fertilizer contains plant nutrients that delay their availability during plant uptake and immediate use after its application. The control of release is due to the physical barrier which coats the fertilizer with a stubstance usually sulfur or wax.
  3. These fertilizers have different effects on plants. In Stevia rebandiana, protein and carbohydrate content increased the most with conventional fertilizer. And the vegetative growth of C. garndiflora developed well in slow-release fertilizer compared to the conventional one.
  4. Gibberellin is a plant growth hormone associated with stem elongation, leaf blades quantity increase, and shoot growth. Gibberellic acid, being the primary component and the most potent gibberellin isolate, became commercially available in sythetic forms. As mentioned, it promotes growth and elonagtion of cells, different concentrations have relative effects to various plant species, plants should be treated in optimum amounts because over-induction may cause inactivity of growing cells.
  5. The objectives of the study is To evaluate the effects of different amounts of GA 3 , Conventional Fertilizer and Slow-Release Fertilizer on growth and chemical composition of Citronella Plant. The physical characteristics will involve vegetative characteristization and the chemical components will include Chlorophyll content, Carbohydrate content, % of Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Potassium.
  6. And to evaluate the effects of Conventional Fertilizer and Slow-Release Fertilizer combined with different amounts of GA 3 on growth and chemical composition of Citronella Plant.
  7. The success of this study may provide basis for developments fertilization techniques and parameters needed for maximum C. winterianus .
  8. C. winterianus belongs to the Kingdom Plantae, Magnoliophyta, Class Liliopsida, Order Poa, Pocaceae, Genus Cymbopogon winterianus.
  9. C. winterianus have leaf blades of 1 meter long and 10 to 50 cm wide. The leaf and basal sheath are glaborous, is usually light green and slightly rough on the surface.
  10. The reason citronella has gained the interest of many researchers is that it has the ability to produce significant amount of essential oil. The citronella oil have various uses such antibacterial and cardiovascular effects. The most common use of the oil is as mosquito repellant and aromatherapeutic agent.
  11. One year old clumps willl be split into slips usually contaning 2 to 3 tillers. The slips will be planted in perforated bags ready for fertilization. The study willl consist of 45 samples for the 15 treatments and 3 replicates
  12. Right after sowing, the plants will be fertilized with 2 different rates of crop-giant fertilizer and osmocote fertilizer. Plants receiving conventional fertilizer will be treated weekly while those receiving osmocote will be treated monthly.
  13. Plants receiving each of the NPK fertilization will be sprayed with GA3 twice every month with rates 25 to 50 ppm. Fertilization will run from October to January The different concentrations corresponds to the time the plants will be subjected to fertilization.
  14. The vegetative characteristics will be determined by the number of leaf blades, size of leaf blades fresh weight of leaves and dry weight using simple measurement and dry-ashing.
  15. The part of the plant to be used are the leaves. One to 2 g of macerated sample will be weighed for all chemical analysis. The chlorophyll concentration will be determined by spectophotometry and calculated by use of arnon's equation:
  16. Carbohydrate concentration will be determined using anthrone test and will be calculated using standard curve of glucose or the following equations.
  17. %Nitrogen will be determined using Kjedahl method. Ammonia will be distilled followed by titration with sulphuric acid. % nitrogen will be calculated as follows: V = Volume of 0.01 N H2SO4 titrated for the sample (mL). B = Digested blank titration volume (mL) N = Normality of H2SO4 solution. 14.01= Atomic weight of N. R = Ratio between total digest volume and distillation volume. Wt1 = Weight of EDTA (g) Wt2 = Weight of dry plant (g) 186.1= Equivalent weight of the EDTA.
  18. % phosphorus will be extracted by dry-ashign derived from chapmann and pratt Calculations of P is as follows where: R = Ratio between total volume of the aliquot and the aliquot volume used for measurement Wt = Weight of dry plant (g)
  19. % potassium will be extarcted via flame photometry and estimed using potassium calivration curve
  20. All data will be analyzed using Turkey's test and ANOVA. Tukey's multiple comparison test is one of several tests that can be used to determine which means amongst a set of means differ from the rest. Risks level would be 5%.
