Nashville VMUG Keynote April 8 2015 - vSphere 6Adam Eckerle
This document provides an overview of vSphere 6.0 including key highlights, deployment options for vCenter Server and the Platform Services Controller, and certification updates. The main points are:
- vSphere 6.0 has seen faster adoption and fewer issues than previous versions. Key features include improved fault tolerance, larger cluster sizes, and simplified workload migration.
- vCenter Server now uses an embedded or external Platform Services Controller for single sign-on, licensing, and certificate management. There are multiple deployment configurations for high availability.

1. A distributed switch functions as a single virtual switch across all associated hosts and is configured in vCenter Server at the data center level. It consists of a control plane in vCenter Server and I/O planes in the VMkernel of each ESXi host.
2. Key components of a distributed switch include distributed ports, uplinks, and port groups. Distributed ports can connect VMs or VMkernel interfaces. Uplinks associate physical NICs across hosts. Port groups define connection configurations.
3. Configuring a distributed switch involves adding the switch in vCenter Server, creating distributed port groups, and defining properties like uplink ports and multicast filtering mode. This provides a consistent network configuration template across
This document provides guidelines for planning and designing a Citrix StoreFront infrastructure. StoreFront plays a critical role in user authentication, resource enumeration, and aggregation. Key recommendations include:
- Deploy at least two StoreFront servers and use an intelligent load balancer like NetScaler for high availability and load balancing.
- Implement SSL certificates to encrypt communication between Receiver and StoreFront. Also consider encrypting backend traffic between StoreFront and XenApp/XenDesktop controllers.
- Configure multiple controllers per XenApp farm/XenDesktop site and use load balancing for large environments or high login loads.
- Configure highly available internal and external beacon points to determine user network location.
- Use application

1) The document discusses three main techniques for virtualizing the x86 CPU: full virtualization using binary translation, OS-assisted virtualization (paravirtualization), and hardware-assisted virtualization.
2) Full virtualization using binary translation allows any x86 OS to run virtualized without modification but has more overhead than other techniques. Paravirtualization requires OS modifications to replace privileged instructions but has lower overhead. Hardware assistance traps privileged instructions to the hypervisor with less overhead but was rigid in early implementations.
3) The document compares the techniques and notes that VMware uses all three, balancing performance and functionality for different workloads and hardware.
Windows Server 2012 provides a scalable and easy to manage virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) solution. It offers three deployment choices for VDI - desktop sessions, pooled virtual machines, and personal virtual machines. The platform features centralized management, easy deployment through automation, unified administration, and streamlined virtual machine management. It delivers a consistently rich user experience for remote users through technologies like RemoteFX for graphics and USB redirection.
- vSphere 5.0 introduces new features for platforms, networking, availability, vMotion, DRS/DPM, vCenter Server, storage, and Site Recovery Manager.
- Key enhancements include support for larger VMs, 3D graphics, more devices, an ESXi firewall, image builder tool, and auto deploy for faster host provisioning using host profiles.
- Auto deploy allows rapid initial deployment and patching of ESXi hosts using a "on the fly" model coordinated with vSphere Host Profiles.

VMworld 2015: Advanced SQL Server on vSphereVMworld
Microsoft SQL Server is one of the most widely deployed “apps” in the market today and is used as the database layer for a myriad of applications, ranging from departmental content repositories to large enterprise OLTP systems. Typical SQL Server workloads are somewhat trivial to virtualize; however, business critical SQL Servers require careful planning to satisfy performance, high availability, and disaster recovery requirements. It is the design of these business critical databases that will be the focus of this breakout session. You will learn how build high-performance SQL Server virtual machines through proper resource allocation, database file management, and use of all-flash storage like XtremIO. You will also learn how to protect these critical systems using a combination of SQL Server and vSphere high availability features. For example, did you know you can vMotion shared-disk Windows Failover Cluster nodes? You can in vSphere 6! Finally, you will learn techniques for rapid deployment, backup, and recovery of SQL Server virtual machines using an all-flash array.
Open Kernel Labs (OK Labs), the leading global provider of embedded virtualization software for mobile phones and broadband Internet devices, and Citrix Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:CTXS), today announced the “nirvana phone” reference architecture, using virtualization to enable both mobile communications and office desktop-type productivity. The nirvana phone concept goes beyond traditional smart phones by allowing users to access their corporate virtual desktop and applications from a single device, in any location. With support for docking to full-sized displays, keyboards, mice and other PC-type peripherals, nirvana phones will offer mobile workers a complete “virtual desktop in your pocket”, allowing them to take their desktop anywhere without the need to carry around a full laptop.
Choosing a Citrix Monitoring Strategy: Key Capabilities and Pitfalls to AvoideG Innovations
Citrix performance monitoring has been gaining a lot of attention and interest. In this presentation, we outline key requirements that any Citrix monitoring solution should support. We analyze the built-in Citrix monitoring tools: Citrix Director, Citrix NetScaler Insight and the Microsoft SCOM management packs and discuss their capabilities and limitations. The need to have at least three different consoles for monitoring a Citrix infrastructure makes monitoring and diagnosis very inefficient. We discuss how the eG Enterprise solution integrates with the built-in Citrix tools and provides 360 degree unified monitoring for a Citrix infrastructure with automated root-cause diagnosis.

This document compares Zimbra and Novell GroupWise. It summarizes that GroupWise lacks consistent experience across clients, has limited web functionality, and does not support ActiveSync for mobile access. The administrator interface is limited and requires using the Windows admin client. GroupWise deployment is on-premise only without true multi-tenancy and lifecycle management is challenging due to differences across clients.
The document discusses the past, present, and future direction of Citrix Receiver. Receiver started as Updater in 2008, focusing on simplicity and automatic updates. It evolved into App Picker in 2010 with an emphasis on self-service app launching. In 2011-2012, Receiver became the Access Hub, providing access to anything from anywhere through multiple platforms. Looking ahead, Receiver will take the form of a Broker in 2013, facilitating discovery, connectivity, interaction between apps and services through a centralized access point. The summary concludes that Receiver continues evolving to normalize diverse devices, operating systems and app types through its brokering functions.

Power Grid Model
The global energy transition is placing new and unprecedented demands on Distribution System Operators (DSOs). Alongside upgrades to grid capacity, processes such as digitization, capacity optimization, and congestion management are becoming vital for delivering reliable services.
Power Grid Model is an open source project from Linux Foundation Energy and provides a calculation engine that is increasingly essential for DSOs. It offers a standards-based foundation enabling real-time power systems analysis, simulations of electrical power grids, and sophisticated what-if analysis. In addition, it enables in-depth studies and analysis of the electrical power grid’s behavior and performance. This comprehensive model incorporates essential factors such as power generation capacity, electrical losses, voltage levels, power flows, and system stability.
Power Grid Model is currently being applied in a wide variety of use cases, including grid planning, expansion, reliability, and congestion studies. It can also help in analyzing the impact of renewable energy integration, assessing the effects of disturbances or faults, and developing strategies for grid control and optimization.
What to expect
For the upcoming meetup we are organizing, we have an exciting lineup of activities planned:
-Insightful presentations covering two practical applications of the Power Grid Model.
-An update on the latest advancements in Power Grid -Model technology during the first and second quarters of 2024.
