Editor's Notes

  1. At Cisco we believe the internet has the power to transform the world. The Cisco Networking Academy program was established to provide global access to ICT education. We leverage our expertise in ICT and networking to develop courses delivered through public-private partnerships. The Networking Academy is Cisco’s largest corporate social responsibility program, and aims to: improve socioeconomic conditions for individuals and communities increase access to digital education and career opportunities support the development of an educated ICT workforce, and promote the growth of the ICT industry
  2. Networking Academy students participate in a comprehensive, consistent learning experience, delivered through leading-edge technology, at campuses in their area and online Courses prepare students for industry-recognized certifications, further education, and entry-level and intermediate careers Courses include development of 21st century skills, and a range of technical and business skills to support students as they embark on or advance their career, or start their own business
  3. Cisco Networking Academy takes a unique approach to delivering its ICT skills education. It is an ecosystem comprised of partners coming from educational institutions locally, plus national and local government, corporations, and NGOs. Cisco provides the curricula, instructor training, assessments, and at-cost equipment. The schools and other partners provide building space and instructors. Networking Academy maintains control of the course content, manages online delivery and assessments, and offers support and discounted equipment. Local educational institutions, governments, and other organizations choose which courses to offer and determine the context in which the courses are to be delivered, such as making them part of a certification or degree program. Instructors receive course-specific teacher training from Cisco, conduct the classes, and administer hands-on lab activities and skills assessments. Networking Academy aims to ensure that students and instructors have the resources they need to accomplish their goals.
  4. Networking Academy started in 1997 as a small-scale effort to help local schools get the best use from donated networking equipment. It has since grown to more than 9,500 academies in 170 countries. This year alone, 20,000 instructors are teaching over 1 million students globally. And since 1997, there have been over 7 million students enrolled all together. Our state-of-the-art online assessment system has delivered over 155 million exams to date. Courses are available in 19 languages (this varies by curriculum, and is continuously expanding). We have succeeded in scaling to this size, while maintaining local relevance and quality, by taking advantage of networking technology. Consistent yet flexible course content is easily extended and adapted to diverse student populations around the world. Network-based applications are a chief contributor to the program’s scalability: Course adoption can occur quickly. Academies can be up and running in the time it takes to train instructors and obtain equipment. Course content can be created, packaged for large audiences, and revised with speed and ease. And colleagues in distant locations can collaborate without the need to travel.
  5. High quality courses and innovative learning tools prepare students for several career paths, as well as industry-recognized certifications, a passport to the job market. This program was created by educators, for educators.
  6. Instructor advocacy is a vital element in the success of the program.
  7. Students receive feedback through comprehensive assessments. They discover quickly what they’ve learned and what they need to review. Students build and troubleshoot real networks with access to trained instructors as needed. This encourages teamwork and enhances problem solving abilities. Students graduate from the program with a marketable skill that has been tested and evaluated prior to their first day on the job. The Networking Academy Facebook site has hundreds of thousands of fans from around the world, connecting with and supporting each other.
  8. Networking Academy teaches more than just ICT skills… Obviously, we teach technology skills. We also teach 21st century skills – key skills for the workplace. And we teach entrepreneurial skills, such as attitude and mindset.
  9. Student competitions are held all over the world, giving students a chance to showcase their knowledge with potential employers, while interacting with students from other nations and academies.
