Establishing shots set the scene and provide context about location, time period, and genre. Medium shots show characters from the waist up to convey information while medium close-ups focus on heads and shoulders to clearly show emotions. Close-ups highlight significant details, like facial expressions, to build suspense or tension. Various shot types like point-of-view, over the shoulder, and shot reverse shot help viewers feel present by showing perspectives and flipping between characters obeying the 180 degree rule. Angle is also important for conveying meaning, with low angles suggesting importance and power while high angles imply less hierarchy.
