The Descent – Hospital scene
Close up
This shot is a close up. A close up is to
show the importance/significance of
something or the facial expressions of a
character. In this scene, it shows a close
up of Sarah's daughter birthday cake. In
this shot this was to show the
significance that Sarah wont see Jessica
blow out her birthday candles.
Mid shot
This is a mid shot. This is to show an
impression of a character or the state of
them. This can be shown similarly for
objects. In this scene this is to show
that Sarah is in a state where she is
fragile and as a audience we know that
she's in a hospital bed as this shot gives
us a view where we can identify her
whereabouts.
Very Wide shot
• This a very wide shot. This is show to the
environment a character is placed. In this
particular scene a very wide shot of Sarah is
placed in this scene to show that Sarah is in
the hospital.
Trombone Shot/Mid-shot
A trombone shot is where the camera moves
forward while simultaneously zooming out. This
was used in this scene to show the current state of
mind that Sarah feels (which is she's fearful)
Steadicam
This shot was used by a Steadicam. A
Steadicam is where a camera instructor
is attached to the camera and moves. A
mechanical arm is used to make the shot
steady given why the shot is named a
Steadicam. Through this scene it also
stays as a wide shot to show the state of
the character (Sarah) and with the
Steadicam it adds the effect that Sarah is
shaken as the Steadicam captures Sarah
running.
Follow shot
This shot is called a Follow Shot. For this shot
The camera man would use a Steadicam and
follow the subject. In this scene Sarah is
running away in the hospital and in order to
capture her running a camera is following her
with a Steadicam.
Two-shot
A two shot is a shot of two people. this
shot is also similarly framed into a wide
shot. In this scene is shown to show the
state of the two friends. Which in this
case they're distraught due to the bad
news of a loss of two people.
Arc shot
An arc shot is a shot used to track
movement. This shot is shot at a 360 degree
angle. This shot is used to show realization
or a state of shock of a character. This shot
was used particular in this scene to show
the shock Sarah feels when she founds out
that her husband and daughter have died
due to the car crash.
