The Analysis
(Sarah and Juno’s Scene)

Cinematography: Mid shot of Sarah and Juno. Camera is on Juno’s side to show Sarah’s emotions.
Mise en scene: Sarah is covered in blood, due to the location she was in last, killing crawlers, diving in blood-like pools
and getting injured herself. She is holding a tool that is off-screen. She is just staring at Juno with a concerning emotion
clearly displayed. Only single light is seen in background, Sarah may think that this is an escape route.
Narrative: We see that there is officially some tension between Sarah and Juno, looking at Sarah’s emotions and the
focus of the camera on her.
Effects & Editing: As the fake cave is too dark to record in (a limitation of even the best cameras in production), these
scenes are recorded with studio lights and then the brightness was decreased in post-production.
Sound: Non-diegetic sound of music that is meant to create a dramatic and depressing atmosphere of this certain scene.
Cinematography: Over the shoulder shot looking at and focusing on Juno from Sarah’s view to show Juno’s emotion.
Mise en scene: Juno is on the screen. Her face shows confusion from Sarah’s emotion. One can say the amount of
shine on her skin can show grease or sweat, signifying that Juno is exhausted from killing all of the crawlers in the area.
Narrative: We continue to see that there is some tension going on with Sarah and Juno just by the lack of speech and
just the emotions on their faces.
Effects & Editing: Continued use of studio lighting and brightness decrease due to camera limitations. Only other use
was to change shots from last slide’s shots to this slide’s shots.
Sound: Non-diegetic sound of music continues in this scene, to keep creating the depressing and dramatic atmosphere.
Cinematography: Close-up of Sarah with “talking
space” on the right, then close-up of her hand,
while she reveals the pendant
Mise en scene: Sarah is covered in blood, due to
the location she was in last, killing crawlers,
diving in blood-like pools and getting injured
herself. The tool she has been using is still
unknown, however we see Juno’s pendant on the
tool, revealed by Sarah. The same light showing
an “escape” route is seen however blurred due to
cinematography
Narrative: A deeper look in Sarah and Juno’s
relationship is seen here. Sarah looks at Juno
whilst she lets go of the tool just a bit to reveal
the pendant, showing us that Juno used that
pendant.
Effects & Editing: More use of studio lighting in
fake cave due to camera limitations.
Sound: Non-diegetic sound of music continues in
this scene, to keep creating the depressing and
dramatic atmosphere.
Cinematography: Close-up of Juno with talking space on left to show her change of emotion.
Mise en scene: Juno is only seen, with little use of backgrounds to show darkness and
claustrophobia, however the focus in these shots are on Juno, whose emotion is changing from
confusion to regret and fear.
Narrative: Juno has just found out that Sarah had found her tool used to kill Beth, and she
knows that Sarah had found out her lies. She may have wanted to tell Sarah that the killing was
an accident and wasn’t meant to happen, but may not have had the confidence.
Effects & Editing: Continued use of studio lighting and brightness decrease due to camera
limitations. Only other use was to change shots from last slide’s shots to this slide’s shots.
Sound: Non-diegetic sound of music continues in this scene, to keep creating the depressing and
dramatic atmosphere.
Cinematography: Extreme close-up of Sarah to show her angered emotion in detail.
Mise en scene: Little use of background to focus on Sarah’s emotions. Lighting behind her that shows what she may
think is an escape route. Little use of backgrounds continue.
Narrative: Sarah is angry at Juno for not only what she had done to Beth, but she also takes into account the affair
between her and Paul. It was most likely the pendant revealed a few seconds ago was given to Juno by Paul.
Effects & Editing: Continued use of studio lighting and brightness decrease due to camera limitations. Only other use
was to change shots from last slide’s shots to this slide’s shots.
Sound: Non-diegetic sound of music continues in this scene, to keep creating the depressing and dramatic atmosphere.
Cinematography: Over-the-shoulder shot on Sarah’s
shoulder, pointing at Juno to show her head turning
towards the sound of a crawler. Sarah also looks at
the crawler, however she just turns her eyes to it, so
an extreme close-up is used.
Mise en scene: Juno looks right after hearing the
noise of a crawler. Sarah also looks right to show
that she notices the crawler as well. Lighting behind
Sarah shows the supposed escape route. Little use
of backgrounds continues.
Narrative: The focus stops on Sarah’s anger and
Juno’s fear and regret, and to the noise of a crawler
that may be about to kill them for food.
Effects & Editing: Continued use of studio lighting
and brightness decrease due to camera limitations.
Only other use was to change shots from last slide’s
shots to this slide’s shots.
Sound: Non-diegetic sound of music continues in
this scene, to keep creating the depressing and
dramatic atmosphere. Diegetic sound of crawler in
the distance panned to left at Juno’s shot and right
at Sarah’s shot. Use of panning showed with red (or
greyscale if printed) sound icons.
Cinematography: Close-up of the tool, revealed as a
pickaxe. The shot changes to a close-up of Sarah about
to stab Juno with the pickaxe. We see a over-the-
shoulder-like shot of Juno, then a shot of Juno’s
damaged leg (after Sarah stabs it)
Mise en scene: We see the pickaxe, then Sarah about to
use it against Juno. We see Juno with a worried face,
only just being aware of what is going on. We then see
blood gushing out of a damaged leg, belonging to Juno.
Little use of background continues. Lighting behind
Sarah shows the supposed escape route.
Narrative: We see the pickaxe that Juno used to kill Beth with.
We know that it was an accident, however, Sarah doesn’t, and
proceeds to kill Juno with the pickaxe she used to kill Beth
with.
Effects & Editing: Continued use of studio lighting and
brightness decrease due to camera limitations. Only other use
was to change shots from last slide’s shots to this slide’s shots.
Sound: Non-diegetic sound of music continues in this scene,
to keep creating the depressing and dramatic atmosphere.
Non-diegetic sound of stabbing to add realism to the stabbing,
Cinematography: Wide shot to show Juno in pain,
bending down after Sarah’s stabbing, as well as
Sarah. Shot changes to close-up of Sarah about to
run to her “escape” route, then to another close-up
of Juno to show her emotion.
Mise en scene: Sarah standing still while Juno is bent
downwards from pain. This lasts for a few seconds,
then Sarah runs to the escape route she knew was
behind her. Juno then looks her angrily. Little use of
background, but more lighting is used to exaggerate
the supposed “escape” route.
Narrative: Juno has just been stabbed by Sarah who
stabbed her for Beth and herself. She thinks she’s
found an escape route, and Juno grows anger,
possibly due to Sarah making her lose part of her
ability to walk without pain.
Editing and Effects: Continued use of studio lighting
and brightness decrease due to camera limitations.

The Descent Analysis: Sarah & Juno

  • 1. The Descent The Analysis (Sarah and Juno’s Scene) Jarad Tansley Cambridge Technicals Media
  • 2. Cinematography: Mid shot of Sarah and Juno. Camera is on Juno’s side to show Sarah’s emotions. Mise en scene: Sarah is covered in blood, due to the location she was in last, killing crawlers, diving in blood-like pools and getting injured herself. She is holding a tool that is off-screen. She is just staring at Juno with a concerning emotion clearly displayed. Only single light is seen in background, Sarah may think that this is an escape route. Narrative: We see that there is officially some tension between Sarah and Juno, looking at Sarah’s emotions and the focus of the camera on her. Effects & Editing: As the fake cave is too dark to record in (a limitation of even the best cameras in production), these scenes are recorded with studio lights and then the brightness was decreased in post-production. Sound: Non-diegetic sound of music that is meant to create a dramatic and depressing atmosphere of this certain scene.
  • 3. Cinematography: Over the shoulder shot looking at and focusing on Juno from Sarah’s view to show Juno’s emotion. Mise en scene: Juno is on the screen. Her face shows confusion from Sarah’s emotion. One can say the amount of shine on her skin can show grease or sweat, signifying that Juno is exhausted from killing all of the crawlers in the area. Narrative: We continue to see that there is some tension going on with Sarah and Juno just by the lack of speech and just the emotions on their faces. Effects & Editing: Continued use of studio lighting and brightness decrease due to camera limitations. Only other use was to change shots from last slide’s shots to this slide’s shots. Sound: Non-diegetic sound of music continues in this scene, to keep creating the depressing and dramatic atmosphere.

Cinematography: Close-up of Sarah with “talking space” on the right, then close-up of her hand, while she reveals the pendant Mise en scene: Sarah is covered in blood, due to the location she was in last, killing crawlers, diving in blood-like pools and getting injured herself. The tool she has been using is still unknown, however we see Juno’s pendant on the tool, revealed by Sarah. The same light showing an “escape” route is seen however blurred due to cinematography Narrative: A deeper look in Sarah and Juno’s relationship is seen here. Sarah looks at Juno whilst she lets go of the tool just a bit to reveal the pendant, showing us that Juno used that pendant. Effects & Editing: More use of studio lighting in fake cave due to camera limitations. Sound: Non-diegetic sound of music continues in this scene, to keep creating the depressing and dramatic atmosphere.
  • 5. Cinematography: Close-up of Juno with talking space on left to show her change of emotion. Mise en scene: Juno is only seen, with little use of backgrounds to show darkness and claustrophobia, however the focus in these shots are on Juno, whose emotion is changing from confusion to regret and fear. Narrative: Juno has just found out that Sarah had found her tool used to kill Beth, and she knows that Sarah had found out her lies. She may have wanted to tell Sarah that the killing was an accident and wasn’t meant to happen, but may not have had the confidence. Effects & Editing: Continued use of studio lighting and brightness decrease due to camera limitations. Only other use was to change shots from last slide’s shots to this slide’s shots. Sound: Non-diegetic sound of music continues in this scene, to keep creating the depressing and dramatic atmosphere.
  • 6. Cinematography: Extreme close-up of Sarah to show her angered emotion in detail. Mise en scene: Little use of background to focus on Sarah’s emotions. Lighting behind her that shows what she may think is an escape route. Little use of backgrounds continue. Narrative: Sarah is angry at Juno for not only what she had done to Beth, but she also takes into account the affair between her and Paul. It was most likely the pendant revealed a few seconds ago was given to Juno by Paul. Effects & Editing: Continued use of studio lighting and brightness decrease due to camera limitations. Only other use was to change shots from last slide’s shots to this slide’s shots. Sound: Non-diegetic sound of music continues in this scene, to keep creating the depressing and dramatic atmosphere.
  • 7. Cinematography: Over-the-shoulder shot on Sarah’s shoulder, pointing at Juno to show her head turning towards the sound of a crawler. Sarah also looks at the crawler, however she just turns her eyes to it, so an extreme close-up is used. Mise en scene: Juno looks right after hearing the noise of a crawler. Sarah also looks right to show that she notices the crawler as well. Lighting behind Sarah shows the supposed escape route. Little use of backgrounds continues. Narrative: The focus stops on Sarah’s anger and Juno’s fear and regret, and to the noise of a crawler that may be about to kill them for food. Effects & Editing: Continued use of studio lighting and brightness decrease due to camera limitations. Only other use was to change shots from last slide’s shots to this slide’s shots. Sound: Non-diegetic sound of music continues in this scene, to keep creating the depressing and dramatic atmosphere. Diegetic sound of crawler in the distance panned to left at Juno’s shot and right at Sarah’s shot. Use of panning showed with red (or greyscale if printed) sound icons.
  • 8. Cinematography: Close-up of the tool, revealed as a pickaxe. The shot changes to a close-up of Sarah about to stab Juno with the pickaxe. We see a over-the- shoulder-like shot of Juno, then a shot of Juno’s damaged leg (after Sarah stabs it) Mise en scene: We see the pickaxe, then Sarah about to use it against Juno. We see Juno with a worried face, only just being aware of what is going on. We then see blood gushing out of a damaged leg, belonging to Juno. Little use of background continues. Lighting behind Sarah shows the supposed escape route. Narrative: We see the pickaxe that Juno used to kill Beth with. We know that it was an accident, however, Sarah doesn’t, and proceeds to kill Juno with the pickaxe she used to kill Beth with. Effects & Editing: Continued use of studio lighting and brightness decrease due to camera limitations. Only other use was to change shots from last slide’s shots to this slide’s shots. Sound: Non-diegetic sound of music continues in this scene, to keep creating the depressing and dramatic atmosphere. Non-diegetic sound of stabbing to add realism to the stabbing,
  • 9. Cinematography: Wide shot to show Juno in pain, bending down after Sarah’s stabbing, as well as Sarah. Shot changes to close-up of Sarah about to run to her “escape” route, then to another close-up of Juno to show her emotion. Mise en scene: Sarah standing still while Juno is bent downwards from pain. This lasts for a few seconds, then Sarah runs to the escape route she knew was behind her. Juno then looks her angrily. Little use of background, but more lighting is used to exaggerate the supposed “escape” route. Narrative: Juno has just been stabbed by Sarah who stabbed her for Beth and herself. She thinks she’s found an escape route, and Juno grows anger, possibly due to Sarah making her lose part of her ability to walk without pain. Editing and Effects: Continued use of studio lighting and brightness decrease due to camera limitations.
